Are Americans as shallow as it appears?
by roschelle

This whole thing is so bizarre to me. It's like being in a bad dream and not being able to wake up. Palin was virtually unknown outside of Alaska just ONE week ago. Now, she's more popular than Obama or McCain. What does that say about the mindset of voters in this country. I've heard people express how much they love her, her kids, even her parents...who've only been shown on TV once at the RNC and have never uttered a word (as far as an interview goes) So what is it about her that has endeared her to so many people.

The scandalous baggage that accompanies her nomination is as lengthy as the Bering Strait...yet she's almost revered by every woman and some men that have been interviewed since the announcement by McCain that she would be his running mate.

The "maverick" is looking more and more like a sidekick...merely going along with the powers that be...he says and does whatever he thinks his champions want to hear. Just like calling lobbyists 'birds of prey' which is a total contradiction to what his true ties with these unnecessary evils in Washington are.

Come on America...are we so shallow that a pretty face is all it takes to win us over? Gov. Palin hasn't given not ONE interview outlining her plans for this country as VP since McCain picked her....only pre-written rhetoric aimed at tearing down the Democratic nominee and his party. Even after her acceptance speech, I still don't know who she is...

Back to High School

Excellent point, it's scary how people seem to latch on to, what, what is it about her that they are latching on to? They voted for Bush, twice, because they could imagine having a beer with him? They'll vote for M/P because they're tough? I just don't get it. Obama and Biden are both so eloquent, reasoned, sensible--empassioned in a positive way. Is this really all about being in middle school and high school and wanting to be in the bitchy, mean boy/girl crowd? Are the nerds, those people who can talk and are nice, really at a disadvantage in this country? It seems so. Let's make sure the band kids and the AV kids and the drama kids and the service organization kids get out and vote. Let's not let them take over the cafeteria again.

I'm baffled

Being one that has not been won over, I don't quite see what it is that everyone is enamored with.

Democratic Principles

In the simplest way, which is usually how I like to look at things, it seems that McCain's political philosophy is like Bush's, where they tell people what is good for them and decide what is good for them, or what they want them to have (or not have as is too often the case). Whereas Obama's seems to be an inclusionary one that is concerned with the welfare of the many, considering the needs of others and developing policies that help the greatest number of people. One is a paternal outlook (Father knows best) and one is democratic where there is actually someone at the helm who considers the greater good. And in yet another oversimplification, McCain doesn't seem to look at people and Obama seems not only to look at people, but to have compassion for them.
