I was eating dinner with two friends a couple of nights ago and the topic of abortion came up. We are all pretty open with each other so each of us just went around and stated our opinions on abortion and then I decided to ask the question, "would you get an abortion if you got pregnant while you were still in college?" I got a "no" for every single person at the table. Was I surprised? Yes What was more shocking was that all three girls said that they would continue to go to school and just let their mothers raise their children. Seriously?
I went back to my dorm that night and did some thinking. Maybe they all said that they would not get an abortion because of cultural morals and standards they've been raised by. All of us at the table were Latinas and Catholic so in our families, abortions are a big no-no. But I was very confused at the fact that they would accept resposibility for their actions by actually having the child but wouldn't raise them and then I got to thinkin about the society that we're growing up in. Are things being made too easy for us? Or, is there something deeper to this, are we being fooled into thinking that life's circumstances can be turned into convenient coincidences?
