Are Valentine’s Day Flowers the Best Show of Love?

The nationwide countdown is on for florists. They are preparing for Valentine’s Day— a day when lovers are tasked with proving their love. It will mean a spending spree of red roses by spouses and significant others competing to showcase their amorous feelings.
Women from coast-to-coast will hope to be the first ones in their office to receive that coveted bouquet of flowers, kicking off a non-verbal sparring among female co-workers. And it seems that the floral gift might help the sender get lucky in the bedroom.
A new survey, conducted by a London-based online flower delivery service Serenata Flowers, found that 34% of women interviewed said they would be more likely to sleep with someone who sent them flowers on Valentine’s Day. Even the men who were part of the 1,100 people interviewed agreed; 36% of them saying a gift of flowers on V-Day would spark their sexuality.
But not everyone agrees. Marc Rudov, a California relationship expert is on a campaign to get American men to boycott the holiday saying, “any guy who gives flowers on February 14 is a blooming idiot.” “There’s nothing romantic about coercing men to oblige female entitlement,” he added. “Valentine’s Day artificially and unilaterally caters to women. It’s the media’s annual male-bashing fest.”
Whatever side of the argument you fall on, here is an alternative. A national campaign titled Insure Your Love is raising awareness about a true expression of love. The sponsors of the program, The Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education, are showcasing the importance of showing your love by providing security for those you love the most with the gift of life insurance.
They call it Love Insurance because it lets loved ones know that you care so much that you’ve made plans to provide for their well-being. Online life insurance rates are lower than ever. The price of a dozen red roses may be more than the monthly premium on a term insurance policy for a healthy person who doesn’t smoke. Think of it this way. Flowers wilt and die. A life insurance policy is a legacy that lives on even after you are gone.
