This past year of college has helped me learn a lot of things but has also disturbed and angered me in many ways. I go to a school that is predominantly white and I would think that the Hispanics who come to this school would (like me) try to associate with the Latino community. However, I have found quite a number of people who refuse to join Latino organizations on campus or who do not associate with the Latino community because they feel that it is a form of self-segregation. Are they serious?
Personally, I think that a lot of the Latinos who feel that way and who only join "white" organizations do so because they feel that they can build a better network of contacts if they stick to hanging around white people. If Latinos continue to think and act this way, we will never be able to progress as a community. It makes me very angry to think that people actually feel this way and makes me question, are we setting OURSELVES back?
