Are You Blogging Earth Day?
by Denise

The BlogHer contributing editors have been blogging Earth Day all month and doing a really good job of it - and so have the members of our community. If you haven't checked out any of their green friendly, environment friendly posts - you should click into the Green & Eco-Conscious topic area and start reading (comments are cool, too!)

I didn't want to do just a "normal" Earth Day post - I wanted to video blog the topic and who better to video blog than my fabulous kids? So, we gave it a try.

The first video was supposed to be just me having a relaxing chat with Liz (she's nine) about Earth Day and the environment. It evolved, as all conversations in my house do, to something that doesn't really resemble a discussion about the environment at all.

So we tried again - with a script! But I'm not very good at following a script (and I hate template response emails too.) This one is better, in fact we love it.

Then, we tried one more with RJ (she's 12) and she did a great job but there were two problems - the kid makes me laugh, so the camera is all shaky and I couldn't help but ask her to talk about over-population, which always leads her into a completely un-PC rant about getting rid of the problem. Aye yi yi. I should learn to follow a script!

Are you blogging Earth Day - seriously or a little wacky - leave your link so we can visit and celebrate along with you.

YES, Carbon Footprint of a Cheeseburger

All though the sassy, urban clean-shaven business chic persona that I have created for myself hardly reeks of environmentalist, even I couldn't resist blogging about the environment on Earth Day. We went to a National Geographic Lecture the other night called  The Challenge Of Climate Change, which, among other things, looked at the Carbon Footprint of a Cheeseburger.  So, I got to thinking about the carbon footprint of my coffee, and life in general....

Carbon footprints

You've made a good point - the carbon footprint of a hummer vs that of the cheeseburger.

That's why I always tell the kids that doing something small can really make a difference. We all need to choose that one small thing and make a commitment to cut it out . That alone would be HUGE for our environment.

And if its easy, we'll do it!

YES! I agree so much!  We're all overwhelmed with trying to tackle the whole issue!!!!!  Just pick one or two things that are easy, and do those. Then, once those are ingrained, pick another one or two.....  You are so right!

Earth Day Resolutions

"What can kids like you do to help protect the environment." I love your video. I asked my kids the same question and I was proud - they knew more than I had realized.

I made a few earth day resolutions this year. We'll see if I can actually stick with them. But I really want to. I've been feeling guilty about various bad habits for way too long now.

Alyssa, I love your take on Earth Day.

uh oh, resolutions

Resolutions give me hives! OK not really but I don't do them very well - but have a ton of respect for those who do. And I'm fascinated by people who make them and then blog their updates, so I hope you'll do that!

Blogging my becoming-greener updates?

I do make resolutions. I think I probably manage to keep around 10% of my promises to myself, which may not seem like a lot, but over the years, it does make a difference.

Re: blogging my progress, that seems like a great topic for next year's earth day, assuming I am still blogging a year from now. Since I promised myself to give blogging a full year, there's a 10% chance that I’ll still have a blog next earth day. :)

Earth Day

Loved the videos. I'm going to ask The Boy what he can do...

I've been thinking about Earth Day a lot. And one of the things that comes to mind is all this focus on global warming. I think it's a bad thing, because global warming is framed as "debatable" on a variety of levels. I'd rather see us drum up support for air quality as a public health issue. Framing air quality as a public health issue would force us in a direction to DO something, since it's not really a debate like global warming is.

Another thing I've been thinking about is money. So often people think of the big things that cost a lot of money. However, as was pointed out with the cheeseburger, there are lots of small things we can do to be green while saving money.

I like your saving money while going green
tips

I might also recommend replacing lightbulbs with compact fluorescents - they cost a little more but they last longer and use less electricity.

How hydrogen can help to reduce carbon
footprint

Many great points have been made!  As we all evaluate how to reduce our carbon footprint, one of the solutions currently being explored is how including hydrogen in our country’s energy portfolio can simultaneously improve the environment and air quality, while reducing our dependence on energy imports.  The Hydrogen Education Foundation is working to help people understand these benefits.

Hydrogen’s versatility as an energy carrier, not an energy source, makes it accessible for use in different applications.  Separate from the frequent emphasis on hydrogen cars, the reality is hydrogen can be used to power many applications.  The next cell phone call you make could be powered by hydrogen since fuel cell power supplies support cell phone towers.  The next time you shop at Wal-Mart the box of Oreo cookies and the new Blue Ray movie you purchase could be transported with a fuel cell forklift.  In fact, just recently a home in Miami, FL installed a home unit that uses hydrogen for electricity.

To learn more about the benefits of hydrogen, we invite everyone to please visit www.h2andyou.org.

Going hydro?

Well that's not a small thing and I'm not sure I'll be able to manage a hydrogen unit for electricity soon - but it's interesting.

A little Earth Day post for the crafters out
there...

I know environmental issues can be gloom and doom, so I tried to mix it up a bit with a Top 5 on Crafting A Green World.

Top 5 Ways Your Fabric Stash Can Save The Earth

Denise, I'm going to copy you as soon as my son is old enough to talk! Until then I can have all the scripts I want, but all I get back is "Ah!"

I miss those days, Skye

I'll trade you a mouthy but adorable 9 year old for a baby!

I didn't blog on Earth Day.

I didn't blog on Earth Day. But I did get some cool info working with NORA on Earth Day. Apparently if every oilheat user would switch over to a B5 blend of oil, it would help save 400 MILLION gallons of oil. Imagine that. That's a looooooooot of oil. I have gone all over the net to get more info on this heating solution and so far the best I have found is http://oilheatamerica.com/index.mv?screen=bioheat

It has pretty cool details on bioheat. Who would have known that normal household items can produce oil to run a heating unit. Amazing. You guys should definitely check it out.
