Lisa Belkin, of the New York Times, poses the question “What is your compromise?” in a Momversation video that she featured in her NYT online column.
That’s an easy question to answer for me, and if you’ve been reading my
blog, you know the answer too. My compromise is me… not enough sleep,
not enough exercise, not enough quality time with my children and
husband, not enough time alone… and more generally, not putting myself
first very often (I do think I’m making some progress because I didn’t
say never!)
I also believe that we cannot have it all, and have it all at the
same time. Does this mean I should have time for my work and everyone
else but myself? Life comes down to 24 hours a day, and although I’m
still looking for 4 more hours each day, I know I need to make my
choices and be content with them. It’s just not always that simple as
you well know. Should I sleep that extra 30 minutes in the morning or
drag myself out of bed to work out before it’s time to get ready for
work and get my girls ready for school?
Sometimes I feel too tired to recognize my choices and operate on
autopilot. I realize that on those days, and luckily there aren’t too
many of them, I go through the motions of my day without ever really
being present. My body may be getting my work done but there’s a part
of me that’s somewhere else. I continue to work on this and find that
exercise and separating my work from my personal time helps me to stay
present in the moment and become less distracted.
What is your compromise? What works for you?
