The Arizona Cardinals are Going to The Super Bowl (and Other Signs of the Apocalypse)

BlogHer Original Post

Oh BlogHer, I had grand plans for this post. Erin and I went all the way to Baltimore to be amongst the Ravens fans for the AFC Championship game. We were going to take video and maybe do some light analysis on the playoff games. We were going to borrow football jerseys from drunk fans for a good visual effect (she is a Lions fan and I am a Bucs fan. It isn't that we don't own jerseys, they just aren't appropriate for this particular game.) We were going to post this video for your viewing pleasure.

Sadly (or possibly fortunately depending on how you look at it) we underestimated both the volume level and how many Ravens fans they can pack into one sports bar in Baltimore. It was also really dark. It isn't that we didn't try to make the video for you, it is just that the video I got could pretty much be anybody doing anything in a really dark, really loud, really crowded room.

Instead, I'll just type about football.

Let's start with the NFC title game. I thought this game was going to be a blowout. I thought Philadelphia was going to kill Arizona. I don't care how many Super Bowls he wins, I still think Kurt Warner is overrated. That's right. I said it. Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin make him look good. Those two are a monster combination so I really shouldn't be surprised when the Cardinals keep winning, yet I am. In fact, I have underestimated this team so completely that I some point I turned to my friend during the game and (I probably should not even admit this) said "Who is the coach of the Arizona Cardinals anyway?" He didn't know either.

The answer is Ken Whisenhunt. I had to look it up. My point being that I write about sports. I should know the name of the head coach of a Super Bowl team. I never thought that Arizona was that team.

I was dead wrong.

But like The Female Fan said "This is truly a fantasy season for a team that
perpetually loses."

Of course The Cardinals season isn't over. In two weeks they face The Pittsburgh Steelers. And I would recognize Mike Tomlin in a crowd of guys who look like Mike Tomlin. This is a team I've been watching all season.

I won't go too deeply into the Steelers/Ravens game because I watched the disappointment on all of the faces of the Baltimore fans yesterday and it still makes me kind of sad. I remember the pain of getting so close to the Super Bowl and then losing in a close game (see the 1999 NFC Title game and a very large reason for much of my ill will towards Kurt Warner) and it sucks.

The AFC Championship game is what you would have expected from two AFC North teams. It was cold and the hits were hard. There was a ton of great defense including a game ending interception for a touchdown by Troy Polamalu.

I don't think it will be a close game nor do I think it will be a good game. Not that this will stop me from watching it or from feeling homesick like I do every time I watch a game played at Raymond James Stadium.

My Super Bowl XLIII prediction? Cardinals 7, Ditka 75 The Steelers take this one 38 Cardinals 14.
