As I type this, late on a Wednesday evening, I'm safely ensconced in a little studio apartment in the East Village of New York City. My daughter is asleep on an unfolded futon, my husband is surfing the web next to me. We've just spent the day with friends in various park playgrounds, capping it off with a delicious meal in a local New York restaurant, and a delicious chai tea in a tiny little coffee house on a quiet little residential street.
I could get use to living in the Big Apple, I think.
It's funny: before we came to New York on our little family vacation, I'd never really thought of New York City as a family kind of town: in my mind (as is probably true of most non-New Yorkers), New York was a city for adults, with its tony restaurants, award-winning plays, and exciting nightlife. It is, after all, the city that never sleeps. However, because of the way we've been traveling on this trip, I'm finding that New York is such an amazingly livable city, particularly for people with young families.
If you're not convinced that New York City is the type of town where you could totally feel like home, allow me to turn you on to some bloggers who convey this without even using words -- instead, they use the magic of their sketchpads, water colours, and acrylics. The following amazing bloggers are artists located in and around the New York City area, and they have the beautiful sites to prove it. Feast your eyes:
Margaret Hurst -- A fellow West Indian, Margaret is a professor at the Pratt Institute, and features beautiful photography and reportage-style water colours. Really lovely work.
sketchbookseduction -- A blog written/drawn by the exceedingly talented Melanie Reim, her line drawings capture the emotion present in each scene she portrays. In this way, her drawings remind me of really good photography.
Day Books -- A diary-style blog showing the pages of Sharon Frost's art journal, as she captures life in the big city.
Craftmonkeys -- Beautiful, stunning sketches by Amanda Kavanagh, some of them created with her -- get this -- iPhone. Not just for texting anymore, people.
Please take a look at the impressive work created by the artists, above -- like me, you may end up experiencing New York City in a way you never expected.
Karen is a writer and photographer in Houston, Texas. You can read/see more of her work at Chookooloonks.
