The Audience is cool but what about the Stage?

Last night, I attended a Johnny Mercer tribute held at The Rialto where, close friend, Maria Howell performed with Joe Gransden and Georgia State University's Jazz Band.  I don't think a better duo could have been chosen than Maria and Joe but, when you add a Jazz Band lead by Professor of Music, Gorgon Vernick, place a cherry on top. I have no doubt Mr. Mercer would agree.

Assisting Maria if ever she needed me, I somehow missed my window of opportunity to take a seat in the audience. As a result, I sat just off stage and watched the entire performance. An experience that gave me a different outlook on success. A backstage outlook.

Like most, I aspire to grow all of my talents to the next level. Heck, even in the areas where I've found myself  remotely talented, I'd like to see where a little practice could get me. Before last night, however, that's about as much definition as I had concerning my success.

I wonder how often we take our imagination pass the audience and to the stage, where we are the center of attention. In the case of Maria and Joe, their stage was opposite Jazz enthusiasts.  As a writer, the stage could be seated across from someone waiting in line to have their book signed or seated beside other authors at a speaking engagement.  As a painter, the stage could be at an art exhibit or, if being interviewed, opposite a journalist for a newspaper.

I wonder how often we imagine our success landing us in front of an audience. If we ever imagine what it would feel like to have a flyer announcing our appearance somewhere and, get this, people actually come. Not only do the people we know show up but people we don't know are in attendance as well.

Just image success complete with your name in lights, PR, appearances, autographs and dinner with people who admire your work. I'll admit my imagination is pretty vivid but it wasn't until last night, when I walked on the same flooring as the stage, that I got a whole new concept of success.

Please share your thoughts...

Have you imagined your success this vividly? What does your stage look like?

If I am going to be honest here, YES!, I have imagined myself a great cook (notice I didn't say Chef). People from all over would travel far to eat my down-home cooking. Oh-yeah! Now that is my dream, but please don't tell anyone. :)

HomeRearedChef Good for you! When I'm daydreaming, I can do a pretty good job of fabricating my future but it's never intentional. Gotta get more intentional. ;-)
