As summer’s produce harvest peaks, it’s time to find ways to preserve the bounty for the long winter days ahead. Pickling, which can be done to vegetables and fruits, is a great way to do this.

Whether you’re new to the pickling process or a veteran, you’re invited to take part in a pickling party on August 10. Shauna Ahern of Gluten-Free Girl and the Chef is throwing a Pickling Party on Twitter and Facebook and across the blogosphere, and everyone is invited to join.

Pickles

To participate, simply write up what you’re preserving in brine and/or take a photo of it. Share that post or photo on Twitter (use #pickleparty to tag it) or on the Pickling Party event page on Facebook. It’s that simple!

This will be the second such event this summer. In early July, Shauna threw a virtual Pie Party, a chance for blog readers, and Twitter and Facebook users around the world to showcase pies they had made. That event led to thousands of pie posts, Tweets and status updates all over the web, and this event is expected to repeat the fun.

If you’ve never pickled before, there are plenty of ideas out there to help you get started. Punk Domestics has tons of recipes and guides to proper pickling technique available, and most state agricultural extension services offer their own guides.

If you need some last-minute pickling ideas, here are some unusual recipes worth a try:

Are you planning to participate in the Pickling Party? What are you pickling this summer? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Still waiting for my first-ever try at growing cucumbers to produce enough to pickle! I planted them late, so it'll be another couple of weeks, I think. But in the meantime, thanks for all the great ideas.

Love the unfancy pickled jalapenos recipe. I'm so trying that. We make really simple refrigerator bread and butter jalapeno pickles a lot and they are awesome on burgers but aren't the best for things like nachos. Can't wait to try these!

sassymonkey Hold the phone, lady. BREAD AND BUTTER JALAPEÑO PICKLES? WANT. Can you share the recipe?

And yes -- I totally want to try that jalapeño recipe -- I've never pickled anything (other than very quick pickles) in my life. Whee!

Genie Gratto YES! Bread and butter jalapeno pickles. I actually have two recipes, both from blogs so super easy to share.

The first is from Homesick Texan and makes just one jar, though I frequently double it -- especially if we are hosting a bbq. They kick ass on burgers. It you are making cheeseburgers just slide them on before you put on the cheese so the cheese melts around them and holds them in place. http://homesicktexan.blogspot.com/2009/07/texas-po...

The second is from Simply Recipes and I haven't tried it but I will someday when I have a better canning set up. It's a larger batch recipe and the results will last longer if you do a water bath with them (see note at bottom of the recipe). http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/jalapeno_bread_an...

I would enjoy that! I went to a jam- and jelly-making party recently and that was fun. Pickles would be even better.
