Autism, Sexism, and Jenny McCarthy

It’s wonderful how routine sexism is. But even after years of noting it, responding to it, and moving on, occasionally an example stops me short.

In conjunction with National Autism Awareness Day, Jenny McCarthy was interviewed on my local Fox affiliate. I didn’t happen to see the interview, but I’ve seen Ms McCarthy before, speaking on Autism recovery, and I’m touched by her story and the work they’re doing on this. Autism is right up there with AIDS as a scourge of my civilization, and any progress on combating it encourages me. I saw a clip, however, as the intro to the complete propaganda they put out on the evening news. She spoke directly and reasonably about the increase in childhood vaccinations, as a source of concern.

But the good part was the intro.  Did they introduce her as author of several books on autism? As principal of a school for autistic children? As the mother of a child who has suffered from autism? As a well known movie actress and comedian? No, they didn’t. They said, “Former Playmate, Jenny McCarthy.” before bringing in their local doctor to “Dispel myths about vaccine safety” (You can relax. He says vaccines are fine.) He had a lengthy segment to deliver the party line on vaccination. He was downright snide, too.

But first they had to stigmatize and diminish Jenny McCarthy. First they had to say, “She can’t have anything to say…look at that rack.” As a mother and a woman I felt slapped in the face, and it sure wasn’t the intro that made me say, “Yep, Dr. Mike, being a male doctor makes you an expert on MY family’s health.”  It was just another warning: these people do not have my best interests in mind, because they don’t respect women. They don’t respect Jenny McCarthy.

If anyone is concerned with Autism (and I think everyone should be) I encourage you to check out the website associated with her foundation. http://www.generationrescue.org/index.html

It is through Jenny's courageous interviews and website, that I became aware of the DAN doctors. Long story short, both of my boys are doing the DAN protocol right now and the results are nothing short of miraculous. My husband joked around the other day that 10 years ago I would have had very little respect for Jenny McCarthy. Unfortunately he is right, but this is another example of not judging a book by it's cover...

Sexism is so interwoven with our society it's tough to tease it out, sometimes. :p

I'm not a fan of Jenny McCarthy's, and I'm one of those who believes the jury is still out about autism and vaccines.

However, when the jury is out, I'm not about to inject my daughter! Especially not after my son was diagnosed with autism! You couldn't pay me enough.

Regardless of that, Ms McCarthy should not be treated like that. That is so rude. I'd be horrified if I (or anyone I knew) was treated like that! I don't care whether she's intelligent or a complete idiot. A little respect, please!

Of course, if they respected her, they might have to respect her position. Typical ad hominem.

 *sigh*

For me, the issue is not whether Ms. McCarthy is right about her concerns, but that her validity as a person is tied to so many routine stereotypes about woman. That sends up so many flags for me.

The thing is, you don't HAVE to be a "former playmate" to be damaged by these attitudes. You can be a 'mother' or a 'single gal' or a 'fomer kindergarten teacher' and reap all the benefits of our society's attitudes about the value of women's contributions. We all suffer, to a greater or lesser extent, from the way sexism is used to manipulate us. This was just such a FINE example.

I have not followed all of her interviews but have seen enough mention of her work, autism and yes, that ever present mention of her Playmate past.
I am not a fan of Playboy and what it represents, it stands to reason that once you have affiliated yourself with it you are labeled forever. It is just too much of a hook for any media to overlook.
It bothers me that sexism is alive and well to take a women down a few notches and question her intelligence. Jenny McCarthy and many other women work tirelessly to bring issues to the table and fight for what they, their children and society needs.
Thanks for recognizing how sexism was linked in to that story. I find myself sometimes feeling as if I'm the only one noticing. Nice to know I may have some company.
