Baby Needs What?!

My husband and I spent the good part of Sunday afternoon “registering” for the baby yesterday.

I guess you could have looked at the fact that we couldn’t even FIND the registry desk as some sort of omen that we were two clueless first-time parents, but a nice Babies ‘R’ Us employee pointed out the massive sign that said “Register Here,” and my husband and I were ready to start scanning.

The woman at the desk was cheerful, and she handed us a questionnaire to complete. It was pretty basic stuff (names of the registrants, addresses, phone number, etc.) until we got to the Grandparents section. There was only enough room for two sets of grandparents. I know that most kids only have four grandparents, but our baby’s extra special cos she’s got SIX. (Think – Divorces and remarriages.) When my husband and I pointed this small fact out, the woman at the desk didn’t really know how to respond.

“Just pick out the best ones, and write those ones down!” She said cheerily.

Right. Ok….?

We scribbled down all of the grandparents names and handed over the form. The registration lady clicked on her keyboard a bit and then handed us a scanner.

“You’re all set. Here’s a list to get your started.”

I looked at the notebook, er “list,” and peered at my husband. “Well, let’s get scanning.” I said.

Naturally, the first item on the list was a crib. “Well, what’s the difference between this one and that one?” My husband asked me, pointing to two separate cribs.

I shrugged. “Well, a lot of things.” (NOTE: Truth be told, I didn’t have a clue what the differences between the two cribs were, other than the fact that one was white and one was cherry wood).

As went meandered around the store, stopping to investigate all of the so-called necessities our baby would need, I began to feel more and more overwhelmed. Everything on the list came with at least 10 different options. And all the while, my husband kept looking at me as if I was supposed to know why we needed one kind of stroller over another. (Although I’m pretty sure I convinced him that we needed the one we registered for because it had built in speakers for an MP3 player.)

Ironically, we did end up scanning quite a few items…Even if the best reason we could think of was that we liked the color.

I’m not due for a few more months, so I’m asking YOU, CluelessMe Blog readers, for some advice. What the heck does a baby really need?

I totally remember being in your shoes! I did our registries online because BRU scared me (still does, have only been in one twice and my daughter is 2). I registered for so much... crap. If I could do it again:

- Pack and Play with bassinet feature. My daughter slept in our room until 5 months of age. She slept in the bassinet part of the PNP until she exceeded the weight limit, and then in the base part. The PNP has proved useful time and time again since then for trips, etc.
- Sleep sacks - get two so you have one when the other is in the wash. As a newborn I loved having her in a onesie or tee and diaper in these - easy changing and she stays warm.
- Infant carseat - I liked being able to snap out the whole thing when it was cold or she was asleep.
- Snap and Go stroller. Cheaper than a fancy stroller and after kiddo outgrows the carseat you can use the SNG as a cart when you go to the farmer's market etc. Also resells at a good price on Craigslist.
- Nail clippers - get at least two of them because those nails grow fast and you will lose one
- A thermometer that is easy to use
- A thermometer for the bath. We have a digital one shaped like a turtle from BRU that still rocks 2 years later.
- Baby monitor. Sony Babycall is still treating us well after two years
- Bottles - if you formula feed it's a given. If you exclusively breast feed it's still nice to have so you can have lunch with a girl friend and leave someone else to tend to the baby for a couple hours. Also you never know what the future holds, it can be helpful

No need to register for receiving blankets, baby washcloths, hooded towels or clothes because people will give you that stuff anyway. The rest is really personal and dependent on your parenting style, if you plan to nurse, etc.

As for a baby bath, we used ours once and found it far easier to cobathe and keep baby secure on us with the grip from a wet washcloth. It's also a really awesome bonding experience. :)

For the first few weeks, the baby needs you two, lots of onsies (t-shirts will scrunch up under their armpits all the time), a few hats and blankets, burpcloths, teeny nail clippers, a bathtub and towels, a thermometer. I had great luck with baby slings, since my kids liked to be next to me all the time. And make sure your camera is charged and leave it out where you can grab it :)

Congratulations and enjoy!

I hope it doesn't seem like I'm AW-ing my blog, but I just posted on this very topic the other day. I decided to put together a gift package for a pregnant friend's baby shower of the items that, in hindsight, I couldn't have lived without after having my first baby last year. I included a list of each item and why it was so helpful. Then it occurred to me that it could help other new first-time moms out there, so I posted it on my blog. You can check it out here if you'd like:

I would also suggest visiting Mommy's Pen (www.mommyspen.com ( http://www.mommyspen.com )), as she just posted a guest blog from a new mommy friend about all the products she recommends. It's very comprehensive and there are several good suggestions.

And yes, BRU is a scary, overwhelming place. My husband, parents, and I spent four hours there just registering for the crib alone. I ended up completing most of my registry online. And that notebook - er "list" - they give you? Yeah, you don't need half the stuff on it. Wipes? Yes. A wipes warmer? Not so much.

Good luck! Baby registering is a rite of passage. ;)

I am a godmother (meaning I had to buy a ton of gifts) and a lot of friends do have kids (more presents to buy) so in my experience the urgent stuff would be:
- all things bedroom, including furniture
- all things bath and a mat to change diapers
- the special container for said diapers
- all things cooking! Bottles, heater for the bottles, cleaner for the bottles etc...
- clothes, especially pj's and underwear in the beginning, as you'll need several a day. Don't get too much in very small size, they will only fit for a few days :)
- the special seat for the car
- a huge tote bag for you :-)

Hope this helps :)
