Back-to-School Jeans. You Know You Love Them.

I can still see them, my beloved back-to-school jeans. I got them every year and their denim was so indigo-dark it hurt to look at them, especially when paired with my bright-white tennies. Life felt crisp and new again in back-to-school jeans. Which is why I still buy myself a pair every year.

This is the first year we've done back-to-school shopping in any official sense. This year my girl entered kindergarten. I can tell she was experiencing some trepidation, so around the first of August I announced the new annual right of passage: back-to-school shopping. There's always a silver lining, my friends.

I hoarded coupons and looked up our sales-tax holiday. What? You don't know about these? While most states have already had theirs, Connecticut, D.C., Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina (they have sales tax holidays on RIFLES and ruled sales tax holidays on energy star products unconstitutional -- someone from SC please to explain), Texas, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia should still be able to get some sales-tax-free loving as of this publish date. Not sure when your state's holiday is? Check out this handy chart.

What's on my girl's list?  School supplies, of course. A pair of sneakers and a pair of boots (it snows here). A winter coat if hers looks too small. Jeans, skirts, wool tights, regular tights, long-sleeved t-shirts, hair accessories, hoodies and a dress or two. We don't have uniforms to deal with, which I'm actually happy about now but will probably deeply regret when her peers start wearing half-shirts from Gucci and I have to hear about it.

We're not buying a five-year-old a computer. Or a cell phone. I'm just going to wait until she's twelve and have the digital chip embedded in her skull. (You laugh, but uneasily.) She might get her own calculator, just because you know calculators are totally fun and cheap.

Now that we're done with her, let's talk about ME. I need some pretty, stiff, spiral-bound notebooks for taking important notes at school assemblies. I need some CDs on which to burn all the photos and video of her performing at school functions. I also might need to replace my beloved Flip Video that I have lost somewhere and Lord, I miss it.

Also? I need some frickin' JEANS. Indigo. With yellow stitching.

I worship the ripeness of promise as summer draws to a close. I know, whether it's through memories or new beginnings, there is so much to live for in this time. My first starts kindergarten this year and I am beside myself with excitement for her, a similar high to a hot pair of back-to-school jeans, which, might be a new ritual for me to share with her (minus the hot).

I know what you mean about life feeling crisp! But today's back to school jeans are very different... they are anything but crisp. They are pre-washed and distressed and ripped and torn. Things have really changed, and I'm not sure how I feel about it.

I blog about my search for the perfect pair of women’s jeans ( http://womensjeansonline.blogspot.com/ ).
