It's that time of year, time to send your children back to school. Whether you're looking forward to school or dreading the end of summer it's important to think about safety now, before your kids go back to class.

WebMD says Crocs are not great school shoes. What do you think?

If your school has mulch on the playground you might want to think about playground fires caused by heat. Spontaneous combustion? Who knew?

Mombian is sending her son to pre-school and shares some terrific links that may help you and your children handle harassment by other students.

It's a shame that we live in a world where bulletproof backpacks are sold. Does your child need one of these or will a backpack blessing be enough?

In the UK they have a cute Safety First program complete with hedgehogs, giraffes and elephants. In the USA we have the America Goes Back to School Program which doesn't have hedgehogs or any other animals as far as I can tell. Ho Hum. Good info but a wee bit boring if you've watched the UK videos.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has a pretty solid list of back to school safety tips. They cover everything from bicycle safety to bus safety to bullying to food safety.

The imaginif blog has some great advice for talking to your kids about keeping safe from predators.

For college students, these safety articles could be important: 10 Awesome Ways to Keep Safe When Partying, 17 Self Defense Tips for Dorm and Campus Safety and 10 Dating Safety Tips. You might also be interested in what campuses have learned from the Virginia Tech shootings.

Have you talked to your kids about school safety? Are you worried? Are your kids worried?

I don't see many mothers worried fire safety for thier children? After Virgina tech, I think parents need to be more involved in school safety. Do they have locks on classroom doors. Most classrooms have only one way out of the classroom, especially if they are upstaris.

we wore tennis shoes to school. Period. Because we could run and jump and climb and play in them.

I love shoes, but school--particularly for little kids--isn't about fashion; it's about learning. And shoes that stay on and don't slip are one less distraction during the day. But I'm also a mom who loves specific dress codes and--gasp!--uniforms, for the same reasons.

Off to bless my sons' backpacks . . .

There are two problems with this. The first problem is that elementary school students shouldn't be wearing sandals with heels or any show with heals or mules with no straps. The article does go on to give examples of the "safe" shoe for school activities and none of those you mentioned would fall into that category.

The next very unfortunate problem is that there are parents who do need an article to tell them about proper school shoes for rain or snow or anything else for that matter. I have seen many many children at school in inappropriate for the weather clothing and shoes.

I understand what the article at WebMd is trying to say, but given that most elementary school girls are wearing sandals with low heels or boots with heels or mules with no back heel strap, I'm thinking Crocs are OK. They stay on better than flip-flops or mules. And, thankyouverymuch, I'm not a complete idiot. When it's raining or snowing I'll put my child in the appropriate shoes (which won't be crocs). Sigh. Sad they even had to suggest we moms wouldn't do that.
