Bad Moms, Bad Moms: Whatcha Gonna Do?

So, you try to do right by your health as a new mom, you really do. You know that that's what you're supposed to do. Put on your own oxygen mask before putting one on your child, take care of yourself first, blah blah blah. You know that when you're breastfeeding, you need to be particularly particular about your health: eat healthy, stay well, not drink two bottles of wine in one sitting, that kind of thing. But what if you want to cut loose once in a while? Do something that was really no big deal when you didn't have a baby strapped to your boob, but now is maybe, you know, not so recommended? The kind of thing that raises eyebrows?

No, I don't mean nursing your baby while dining out at Denny's (although, for the record, the fact that nursing in public is still seen, in some quarters, as risque behavior remains, in my opinion, one of the single most important public health issues in both Canada and the US.) I mean, have an extra drink one evening. Or, you know, get a tattoo.

You heard me right. I want to get a tattoo. So does this blogger. And we've been making plans to do exactly that. But when we started tweeting our idea - get tattoos in Houston! before the Mom 2.0 Summit! - we got some worried and worrisome responses. (For example, from wamarineangel:"@herbadmother just a note on that... most reputable tattoo artists will make sure that you're done breastfeeding before they tattoo.")

So we did some research.

Turns out, one is supposed to exercise some caution when considering getting a tattoo while breastfeeding. According to La Leche League: "Most tattooists will not knowingly tattoo a pregnant or breastfeeding mother. It is suggested that mothers wait at least until the child's first birthday to give their bodies a chance to recover completely from childbirth before getting a tattoo."

However, LLL also says that tattoo ink molecules are too large to pass into breastmilk. The risk isn't with the ink - it's with the possibility of infections ("the most prevalent risks of tattooing".)So LLL - apart from insisting that it's maybe best to wait until a year has passed - recommends following the usual precautions - making sure that the tattoo artist follows proper health and safety procedures, etc.

Dr. Sears says this: "the needles used for the tattoo will pose a very small risk of transmitting hepatitis C. Recent research shows that a larger, multi-colored tattoo poses a higher risk than small black tattoos. Another study showed that the risk of contracting hepatitis is actually higher during a dentist visit than while getting a tattoo, so this subject remains controversial." He adds, unnecessarily, "before you permanently alter your body, imagine what this tattoo would look like on your Grandmother… because some day that is how you will look!"

And according to InkedBlog:

The possibility of the ink migrating into the mother’s blood plasma and then into the milk-making cells of the breast is a myth, according to Frank Nice, RPh. It is possible however, to have allergic reactions to the tattoo ink.

According to a survey of tattooed or pierced mothers by Mary Jozwiak, IBCLC, a moderator at HipMama magazine, the risk for blood-borne illnesses is not increased for mothers who
were tattooed by a professional who followed the aftercare instructions.

So, we're going to do it. If Dr. Sears and InkedBlog can agree on its relative safety, then we figure we're pretty good. We will, after all, take all the necessary precautions and be attentive to aftercare and what-not. We are, after all, good mothers.

Sort of.

How about you? Would you do it - get a tatt while nursing?

Catherine Connors blogs at Her Bad Mother, where she's wondering how and why it is that having children - like, say, entering The Amazing Race - puts pressure on even the best relationships.

I'm the tattoo'ing type and if the whim struck me while preganat or breastfeeding to get a little ink? You can bet I would.

Then again, I also ate soft cheeses, kept up on my hair color, got manicures, and lived continued to live on caffeine so who am I to weigh in? My children should probably be confiscated altogether, what with all that fast, hard, living on the edge I did.

This is good. I have been looking for someone, ANYONE to back me up that I'm not completely horrible to want to get my tattoo now. Been thinking about it for a loooooong time and of course I finally decided on the design while I was preggers.

Now I can tell my husband that the internets said that it's okay. And he'll grudgingly accept it. Like the time I was pregnant and I drank that Guinness.

I got my tattoo way before I became a mommy. I suppose if I felt strongly enough about getting one while breastfeeding I would. I was doing all of the "right" things and had an ear infection when I was breastfeeding. Sometimes these things happen. With proper care tats heal quite nicely; I did not have any problems when I got mine.

What a huge response - does that mean there will be tattoos getting gotten at BlogHer 09?

I also colored my roots when I was pregnant and ate soft cheese, so... I'm sorta a rebel like that.

Nope. I wouldn't. But not because I would think it risky to myself or my nursling, but because I'm a milk donor (even though I can only pump pathetic small amounts at a time- 1/4th-1oz) and follow the same "recommended" practices as blood donors. :)

As long as you're not a milk donor and have researched the risks and are being careful and choosing a reputable tattoo artist, I don't see the problem.

My first thought was "I would never think to research that kind of thing."  Then I realized that I actually did get a huge tattoo with a bit of colour in it when my third was a year old and still breastfeeding.  Good thing it's probably not harmful, cause as if I need to feel guiltier than basic run-of-the-mill mom guilt.

It would never dawn on me to think twice about getting a tattoo while breastfeeding, if I was set on getting a new tattoo - so I'd probably do it. My concerns always revolves around the cleanliness and skill of the artist creating something permanent on my canvas.  So, what's on your canvas baby?

What did you get!? And I'd probably do it.

Have a tattoo. Love it. Will plan to get more, but not at blogher.

I have to ask. What's up with the whole I'm getting a tattoo at blogher movement? It is all over Twitter. Did you know that? Is this like the I say dude and let my kids run with sharp objects thing that all those clever clever PTA moms are doing on their bloggy blogs?

Do you know you guys have started a movement. You should get one of those badges and put it on your blogs.  It will be HUGE.

Okay, I'm just teasin. Really. I am. I think it's cool you want to ink together. It hurts like a bitch so nice to have some other chicks there to hold your hand. Ink rawks. I'd give my opinion on getting it while breastfeeding if I had one. But.. I'm one of those truly bad, bad mothers who said eff that to the whole baby sucking on my boobie thing.

Peace out you rockstars you,

If the hygiene is good, why not?

Its interesting to read about the reasons women get tattoos.  "the female canvas" ( http://www.thefemalecanvas.com/index.php?option=co... )has several pages of writing by women describing why they got their tattoos, and how they feel about them now.

Another standard line (apart from that grandmother one) is - "you will not always like it".

One of the most meaningful things about my tattoos for me is exactly that. I'm proud of who I am right now.  Even if I change, I will always be proud of who I was.  My tattoos are visible traces of where I am right now in my life.  Its like a commitment to myself, if you like. I trust myself enough to know that I will never be ashamed of who I used to be...if that makes sense...

daniloth - since presumablyyou would be taking all these precautions anyway. It's not as though you don't want to be careful not to get Hep A when not breastfeeding, is it?

BTW, I would also recommend simple - mine is of an infinity sign, and I love it as much as the day I got it.

I wouldn't get a tattoo while nursing, but only because I wouldn't get a tattoo in general.  If I were the tattoo-ing sort, I don't think that breastfeeding would stop me.  I think that we place too many unnecessary limits on nursing mothers in general, and it ends up being a disincentive to breastfeeding.  If you're comfortable, I say go for it!

And hopefully I'll be doing it in Chicago in July. :)  My only deterrent for getting a tattoo is that I can't give blood for a whole year after that.

I got a small tattoo on my wrist when I was exclusively breastfeeding my then six month old (which I did until he was one, with small amounts of table food mixed in). It was fine. My advice - be anal about keeping it clean, don't get it on your breast (just saying), and if you want a larger tattoo with lots of colors, wait.

... about the design of your tattoo.  I have two (got them at age 18) and hate them both now. They really start to look nasty as you get older. I tried to be clever and get something "meaningful" -- which now means nothing to me. My two cents: get something simple.

Oh, you asked about getting it while nursing. {shrug} Seems like you've done your homework, so I wouldn't have a problem with that.

No way. But not because of health issues. It's because I'm a late adapter for almost everything. I never discover anything until it's passée. So no extra piercings or tattoos for me--they're permanent, and would mark me as permanently passée.
