Dorothy Allison's

devastating novel, Bastard Out of Carolina, was the last fiction book I read before entering journalism school. The day I started reading it, two different strangers on the train came up to me and said, "that's a really good book," and Bastard delivered.

Strangers often comment

I have read a lot of blog posts that indicate strangers often comment in this way when they see others reading Allison's book.

I always find it interesting that people say "that's a really good book" about Bastard Out of Carolina. It is, a good book, of course - but it's a lot more than that. In fact good is not really the first word that would come to mind if I wanted to describe it.
