A Beacon of Style and Optimism

Barack Obama Is Sworn In As 44th President Of The United States

Through the sea of black wool overcoats that converged on our nation’s capital yesterday, Mrs. O shined bright. Wearing a custom Isabel Toledo coat and dress in bright lemongrass yellow, our First Lady, Mrs. O, was a beacon of both style and optimism.

The Isabel Toledo coat and dress were made of Swiss wool lace, backed with netting for warmth and lined in French silk – materials and nuanced details characteristic of couture. Green leather J. Crew gloves, coordinating Jimmy Choo “Glacier” pumps and a rectangular diamond pin worn at the neckline added unexpected, personal touches, making the look even more uniquely Mrs. O’s own.

Yellow was an unexpected but well-chosen color for Mrs. O’s debut ensemble as First Lady. In this difficult and trying economic time, it projected a true sense of optimism. Elaborating on the choice, designer Isabel Toledo told Cathy Horyn of the New York Times, “I wanted to pick a very optimistic color, that had sunshine.” Toledo’s sentiments echo those of the color house Pantone, which recently named “Mimosa” the color of 2009 for its “hopefulness and reassurance in a climate of change."

Yellow is also not a color often associated with the winter season. Easter, yes. Mid-January, no. But known for breaking fashion conventions – who can forget the black flats for the final night of the DNC? – Mrs. O again made her own fashion rules. The result was a grown-up ensemble with a modern, fresh twist.

Taking in the scene at the capital yesterday, it was difficult not to recall an image of Jacqueline Kennedy on the day of J.F.K.’s Inauguration. At the time, Mrs. Kennedy famously opted for fawn-colored wool coat with sable collar, in part a strategic move to stand out from the sea of oversized furs. Deliberate or not, Mrs. O’s yellow ensemble achieved the same effect more than 45 years later.

The choice of designer, Isabel Toledo, was a name less frequently mentioned in the months of speculation surrounding Mrs. O’s Inaugural wardrobe – but a complete surprise, it was not. Mrs. O had previously worn a black tunic and palazzo pants by Isabel Toledo (masterfully accessorized with a Tom Binns necklace) to attend the high profile Vogue / Calvin Klein campaign fundraiser in June 2008. Later interviewed by the New York Daily News in October 2008, Toledo revealed she had been working on several more designs for Mrs. O.

A designer widely unknown to American public, but celebrated within the inner circles of fashion, the choice of Isabel Toledo, then and now, shows Mrs. O to be a knowledgeable, astute student of fashion. Toledo works from her loft on 28th St. and Broadway in Manhattan that she shares with her husband Ruben Toledo, an acclaimed fashion illustrator. Toledo was the Creative Director of Anne Klein for two seasons, and has designed under the label of her own name for 25 years.

“I wanted her to feel charmed, and in that way would charm everybody,” said Toledo to Cathy Horyn. Charm us, Mrs. O did. For more information on Mrs. O’s fashion and style, visit Mrs-O.org.

I really loved Michelle's ensemble.  The color was so cheery & her green gloves were a perfect contrast.

Michelle Obama's inaugural style seems new and fresh -- representing what most of us felt as we watched the ceremonies. I bet she and her girls will do much to bring back the ribbon-tie look of a few years ago with her cardigan and her girls' coats. Simply wonderful!

I learn a lot when I read post by fashion experts Mrs. T. and that's why I'm glad you're here at Blogher posting on Mrs. Obama's fashion.  My not a fashion maven maven and yet fashion writing and fashion TV shows sometimes mesmerize me.

Despite my limited fashion sense, I had enough sense to know I should mention the top-secret ball gown because my personal blog is called "Whose Shoes are These Anyway?"  It has nothing to do with shoes or dresses, but I get hits from people looking for shoes and clothes worn by celebrities, and that keeps me aware of how many people go ga-ga for fashion news.  So, I occasionally write a post to remind surfers of my ignorance, creating a Google paradox.

At my personal blog I talked about the balls and the First Lady's clothes but from the perspective of a novice looking at what the fashionistas had to say.  I know nothing of fabric, the correct name for that shade of yellow (lemongrass), or why anyone should wear Jimmy Choos (I've seen pics though and if I had great arched feet I'd wear them).  I'm pretty much an I like it/I don't like it person.  When I saw Mrs. Obama's Toledo outfit, I thought, "Hmm. That says fancy pastor's wife to me," and moved onto "She must be both proud and nervous."

When someone at Blogher told me about your blog, Mrs. O., I updated and gave you a paragraph of plugging in "The Balls, The Dancing, and Michelle Obama's Secret Gown:  Wu Wu ( http://bigsole.blogspot.com/2009/01/balls-dancing-... )!"

Now I'll have to update to say you're here at BlogHer.  Good news for us.

Kudos to your coverage.  You help people like me, the fashion-challenged. :-)  I'll be visiting your work here and at your blog in the future just so I can know what people are talking about when they go nuts about what our First Lady is wearing. I like pointing people in the right direction. :-)

Mrs. T, thank you so much for this write-up. I thought the suit gorgeous. And I must say, Ms. Toledo had a superb canvas with which to work! For yellow, like orange, is a color that one must wear well -- or it wears you.

Now I'd love to know your thoughts:
- Bravo to the Obamas for going to J. Crew ( http://www.newsday.com/news/local/politics/ny-obam...,0,5485683.story ) for their daughters' outfits! Accessible trendsetters?
- The WSJ reports ( http://blogs.wsj.com/runway/2009/01/21/nrdc-to-sel... ) that Barney's will sell Toledo's ensemble in March. How about the rest of us - who will have the knockoff first? Or pattern? UPDATED: Her green gloves were J. Crew.

I was thrilled when I saw her dress!  So classic and gorgeous, but the color was my favorite part. She has a wonderful energy, they both do.  It was such a pleasure to watch them both yesterday.  And their daughters?  So beautiful.

Michelle Obama always looks fantastic!  And the thing I love about her is, you notice her because she looks good-- not because of the clothes themselves.  That comes second, after the initial "WOW!"  I think it's fantastic that she can toe the line between fashion-forward and classic elegance, but her confidence is the thing that shines the brightest.  I cannot wait to see what she's going to do!  Malia and Sasha are so lucky to have such a strong mother and  role model.

Michelle O was a homerun in her matching coat and dress by rising-star designer, Isabel Toledo.

The choice of color was bright and optimistic and signified a spring-awakening. Most commentators had trouble describing the color...some called it green and others called it yellow.

I called it "fabulous".
