Beating The Summer Boredom Blues
Summer time is one of my favorite times of the year. I love the semi-unstructured atmosphere for 3 whole months. But let's be honest… If I don't have some sort of plan, the kids are going to drive me crazy. I'll be dropping the kids of at school next August, proudly sporting my new wig hoping to cover up my bald head from pulling my hair out.
This Christmas, our friends inspired us with their idea of a family advent calendar that included special activities to celebrate the season. We put a mix of free and cheap activities on our calendar and the kids fell in LOVE with it! It got me thinking. Why couldn't I do the same sort of idea for summer? With input from the entire family, here are some of the fun, free (or at least cheap) things we will be doing this summer around our city.
A Night Under the Stars - A backyard camp out and stargazing with the help of Google Sky app for Android.
Fake Restaurant - Chefs Ethan & Erin prepare their award winning recipes (PB & J, anyone?) for our family's dinner service. (Watch out Gordon Ramsay…)
Regal Family Film Festival - Free family movies Tuesdays and Wednesdays at a Regal Cinema near you.
Indy Parks - Nature hikes, Touch A Truck, swimming, you name it… Indy Parks has some of the most wonderful kid-friendly activities around.
Indianapolis Children's Museum - Our kids never tire of the Children's Museum. Our yearly membership pays for itself in 2 visits. This makes rainy days WAY more fun (and Mommy WAY less grumpy)! Plus, our kids have grown to love the Lilly Theater which presents children's plays (included in admission!).
IMCPL Summer Reading Program - The whole family gets involved in reading and earning prizes at our local library. Prizes include (but are not limited to) tickets to Indianapolis Indians games, free milkshakes, free books… Plus, the library has a variety of hands on workshops and special guests just for kids.
Geocaching - Who knew treasure hunting could be so much fun? With the help of our GPS and a spirit of adventure, we'll set off outdoors to find some treasure and get some exercise!
Kids Bowl Free - 2 free games of bowling everyday? Wow...
In addition to arts and crafts, dance parties and running through the sprinkler, there will be plenty of "down time".
What's something fun you are going to do this summer? How long does it take before you hear the words "I'm bored..." at your house?
