How Acne Forms

Acne forms over the course of several weeks and through a series of complex events in the skin. The pimple that you see on your chin as if it appeared overnight, has in fact been hard at “work” below the surface of your skin for weeks before you see it.   Below I’ll describe the entire process of how acne forms. ...more

Ridiculous iPhone App?

I don’t have an iPhone.  I don’t have any kind of smart phone even though my husband and numerous friends have repeatedly recommended that I get one.  I don’t have one not because I am opposed to smart phones; I don’t have because I am afraid if I have one I’ll never put it down.  I fear that my time sucking habit of internet surfing will simply over take my life if I have a smart phone so in lieu of just gaining some much needed self-control I  decided to just have a simple cellphone instead.  For now all I can do with my phone is make and receive ph...more

What Causes Acne?

Even with all the research that has been conducted about acne the debate still rages about the causes of acne.  The exact causes of acne are not entirely known and subsequently because of this there is no actual cure for acne.  At the moment experts believe that acne results from several related factors.  ...more

Hey babyface

Yesterday I was watching an advert for Maybelline Dream Creamy foundation. This is how it goes: 'Perfect looking skin? I want more.' What the WHAT? This is patent idiocy. What more could you want than perfection?  '100% baby-smooth-looking perfection', apparently. Hang on, let me get this straight: so it's not sufficient to aspire to the kind of perfect skin that very few women have anyway, now our aim must be to have the face of a baby? The kind of skin that, by definition, NO HUMAN, ADULT WOMAN CAN POSSIBLY HAVE? Well why don't you just shoot me now? If women buy into this ridiculous message, we are setting ourselves up for guaranteed misery....more

Blonde Finally Navigates Blogher Site!

It took me ages to realise that HEY, I can blog on Blogher! Cool! Of course, the moment I sit down to write my husband starts calling me from the kitchen (a rockstar in the kitchen, that man, but he likes an audience) the kids are NOT quietly awaiting sleep (contrary to popular belief), and I think I've smudged my awesome red toenail polish....more

How to have half-decent skin. Or not, as the case my be.

I was going to post part 3 of my 'How to have half-decent skin' series today, and I did actually start writing it. And then I stopped. The fact is, I was feeling like a bit of a fraud because today I don't really have half-decent skin at all. In fact, I am seriously contemplating refusing to leave the house or answer the doorbell for several days until a couple of particularly evil erumpent spotules have vamoosed. ...more

How to have half-decent skin: step 2 of 4

After cleansing, step 2 in any sensible skincare regime is moisturising. Although here I must take a quick tangent on the subject of toners. And by toners what I mean is unnecessary bottles of expensive water and alcohol....more

How to have half-decent skin: step 1 of 4

If you have been blessed with naturally beautiful, problem-free skin, stop reading now. If you haven't, come and sit on my team. Like most of the female population (I suspect), I have long been engaged in a love-hate struggle with my skin. And by that I mean a pitched battle involving chemical warfare and instruments of torture that may well contravene the Geneva convention. I only came to some form of truce with it when I hit my thirties. This may be one of the (few) benefits of ageing or it may be down to finding a regime that works for me....more
