“The heart is where it all starts and ends,” said Dr. Greg Fischer of Mount Sinai School of Medicine, a top cardiac anesthesiologist - someone who puts those going through heart surgery out so they don’t feel it.
He came to the US from Switzerland about seven years ago for a great job as a doctor who works in the academic world as opposed to running his own private practice.
I’ve heard a lot of young people wanting to head into medicine because they think it’s a goldmine. So, I asked Dr. Fischer: does the medical profession make sense if your goal is to make money?
“No,” he said. “It’s a fantastic field, but not for the money. Today, you’ll earn 20-30 percent less because of all of the government changes in health care. The new rules mean that that revenue will come straight out of health care and, with it, doctors’ compensation.”
So when does the medical profession make sense? Well, it goes back to what we talk about here at SuperFutures – your passion.
“If you love science, it’s a great field,” he said. “But you’ve got to be passionate about it because the hours are long.”
What countries or schools are considered tops today, I asked?
He said the schools in the US are as good as those in Europe, whether it’s Switzerland or the UK.
If you do care about making a good living, he said, you may not want to go into research. “Researchers are often so committed to doing good things, they don’t make much and are often working by themselves.”
I asked about private practice – surely you’d make more there, right? He said that while most would expect to earn more through your own business, he said that position in academia might yield more. Plus, the patient cases are some of the most interesting.
Maybe you’ve got some creative skills coupled with a passion for medicine? Who knows, maybe The Doctors TV show – or something like it – is in your future. You might consider SuperFutures’ Discover Your Future course to explore your career options based on your passions and skills.
