Becoming Minnesotan

Where I come from, the temperature dips below zero two, maybe three times a year. It happens in the wee hours of the morning, and when it does, it dominates the local media. The NBC news affiliate will run stories about where the homeless will sleep while their CBS counterpart will air an exposé about the deadly threat that the arctic air presents.

But in Minnesota, it's just a way of life. Last year, during my first Minnesota winter, I lamented over the winters I used to know. The kind that brought snow one day, and 50 degree temperatures the next. The kind where negative temperatures happened so seldom that it was the major news story. Where sunshine reigns 300 days a year.

In Minnesota, people place houses on ice in winter. Municipalities routinely flood their parks to make ice rinks; you know, because they can. It's not unheard of to plug your car in at night, and highs below zero are just par for the course. Today's high? -3. In fact, this morning the air temperature hovered around -8 while the wind chill was a brisk -33.

It's the kind of cold that will freeze your nose hairs together in two seconds flat. Take a deep breath? Better not, it's likely to collapse a lung. This kind of weather will freeze flesh in about 10 minutes. And according to the local media, it is only just barley cold enough to prompt an air temperature warning.

I've never considered myself to be all that tough when it comes to the cold. But people here get excited when the temperature finally dips below zero. And while last year I would have looked at those people with a skeptical eye and curiosity about their sanity, this year I find myself joining the cause.

Almost like Coloradoans relish in their world class ski resorts, I find myself wearing our crazy ass cold like a badge of honor. High of 4 degrees? That's a freakin' heat wave people!

Yes, I'll finally admit that I may have actually stepped into the role of proud Minnesotan. I head "up north" in the summer and look forward to the subzero temperatures in the winter. You'll probably find me on the ice rink temporarily erected at my local park this weekend, and don't be surprised if my children become hockey players (it's the Minnesota way).

But for the record, you will still not hear me utter "dontcha know, " refer to soda as pop, or elongate my o's. I may be okay with, even slightly excited about the cold, but I haven't gone completely Minnesotan. Not yet anyway.

I tried, tried, tried to avoid it.

I just couldn't.

Pick a more manageable goal and don't let "garbage" become "gerbage," or "flag" become "fleg.'

Okay, my car battery died shortly after writing this...and I was ticked. Stupid cold. And I'd still take a CO winter of MN any day. But something about being able to say "The high is -3, take that!" Makes me feel proud.

Now, since I'm seriously new to this site. Will someone please tell me how I can insert a hyperlink into my signature?

My husband moved to CO in his early 20s from MN. We met there, married there, started a family there...and yet here we are! Hmm...

I've also been a Minnesotan for about 30 years (my entire life). I keep saying that I'm going to take up a winter hobby like skiing so that I'm excited when the cold and snow come. It still hasn't happened, so I only really enjoy how pretty it is when it snows (especially if I can enjoy it from inside my house). Why am I still here? Why are any of us here? I'm not sure, but I have heard that Minnesota and Maine have the highest "returnee" levels of any states, i.e. you may go away for school, jobs, etc. but you usually come back...

Seriously. You're like another breed of human being. If I didn't know better, I'd think you were aliens. Or pod people or something.

... in just four days! And that would be 'northern' Minnesota, too, a full 300 miles of the Twin Cities where it's positively balmy.

When I was growing up, 40 below was "cold" -- anything else was a nice winter day. And honestly, it WAS. It was a drier cold, it snowed every day, the sun twinkled through snow crystals in the air.

Get me in the car, NOW. "I'll be home for Christmas."

Glad you are adapting - I've been here 30 years and while I definitely do not like walking the dog in this weather, I do find it invigorating.  Yesterday when it was still ridicously cold and snowing, we realized we were out of coffee so my daughter walked to the coffee shop one block away and came back with  this thing that I will call a coffee stopper ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/funnybusiness/3113796... ) -- looks like a golf tee( okay I've never played golf) and you put it in the opening where you sip the coffee so it won't get cold while you are walking outside.

I moved from Florida to Chicago and I want to go on record as saying to things:

1) The only thing worse, to me, than living in Chicago would be living in Minnesota.

2) If I ever look forward to winter here in Chicago, someone should take me to a therapist - against my will if necessary because I will obviously be in need of some medical assistance.

But, I'm glad you've adjusted and seem happy to be a Minnesotan. This northern stuff, it's just not for me.
