On Being An Advocate

I advocate for my Autistic son because:

  • He needs a voice louder than his sometimes to make a point. His point.
  • Some teachers need to be reminded of simple accommodations and IEP's; things that can help him understand things better. Things that help him produce results we all know he can accomplish.
  • He deserves the right to have a regular education, in a regular classroom, doing regular things so he can go out into the workforce and work at a job that is not menial.
  • The students in his school also deserve the right to learn from him; just as much as he learns from them. How are we supposed to understand and accept different people and
things if we aren't dealing with it and learning about it every day in some way?
  • His teachers, other teachers, and the administration deserve the privilege to also learn about him and from
him, and the others who will come after, and benefit from his coming
    before them.
  • There is more than one way to get from point A to point B, and sometimes you just have to pass Q to get there. He'll show you how.
  • Because I love him. Because he's my son. Because he is amazing.
  • Because I can. Because I should.
  • Because I have to. If I don't he may fall through the cracks.

And that's just not acceptable.
