Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett in the The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

All right movie fans, the Oscar nominations are out! "The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button" leads the Oscar field with a total of thirteen nominations. Among those star Brad Pitt was nominated for Best Actor, co-star Taraji P. Henson was nominated for Best Supporting Actress and the film was nominated for Best Picture.

Coming in second with ten nominations was the feel good movie set in the slums of Mumbai, "Slumdog Millionaire." Though it didn't receive any acting nominations, it was singled out for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture.

Here are the major nominations:

Best Picture
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire

Best Actress
Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie, Changeling
Melissa Leo, Frozen River
Meryl Streep, Doubt
Kate Winslet, The Reader

Best Actor
Richard Jenkins, The Visitor
Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon
Sean Penn, Milk
Brad Pitt, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler

Best Supporting Actress
Amy Adams, Doubt
Penelope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Viola Davis, Doubt
Taraji P. Hensen, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler

Best Supporting Actor
Josh Brolin, Milk
Robert Downey Jr., Tropic Thunder
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Doubt
Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight
Michael Shannon, Revolutionary Road

Surprises:

Kate Winslet was nominated for "The Reader" instead of "Revolutionary Road:" Winslet was astounding in "Revolutionary Road" so I find this one surprising.

Leonardo DiCaprio wasn't nominated for "Revolutionary Road:" Leo was robbed.

Clint Eastwood wasn't nominated for "Gran Torino:" Especially since Eastwood has reportedly said this is his last film and we know how Hollywood loves sentiment. It's possible Eastwood was handicapped by some of the themes in the movie relating to race and gang violence. Joanna Eng, guest posting for Racialicious has some fascinating thoughts on the film and race.

Richard Jenkins nominated for Best Actor for the little known film, "The Visitor:" Jenkins is one of those actors whose face you know, but not usually his name. His most recent prominent role that I know of was as the father in HBO's "Six Feet Under." What a nice surprise for a veteran actor.

The top Oscar acting nominations almost exactly mirror the top Screen Actors Guild acting nominations: In fact all the actors and actresses are exactly the same. The only difference is Kate Winslet is nominated for a SAG for "Revolutionary Road," and she's nominated for an Oscar for "The Reader."

Things you can pretty much guarantee:

Best Actor is really between Brad Pitt, Frank Langella and Sean Penn

Best Actress is really between Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet. Though Anne Hathaway has a chance to sneak in there.

The late Heath Ledger is a lock for Best Supporting Actor for "Dark Knight."

Some funny sidebars: On "The View" this morning, Whoopi Goldberg and the Gabby Girls were talking about the nominations and when they got to Frank Langella there were a few knowing chuckles from the audience. You see, Whoopi Goldberg and Frank Langella used to be an item. In fact they once lived together.

So Whoopi admitted to that and then said, "Let's get it out of the way. 'Cause I know y'all know." Barbara Walters then started to talk about the rest of the Best Actor nominees when Joy Behar interrupted and asked Whoopi "How many (of those) have you slept with?"

Director Ron Howard who's been nominated for "Frost/Nixon" was a guest later on in the show. He talked about being nominated for Best Director. "It's a real thrill. It's not my first but what I'm learning is it never gets old."

He said when casting the film "Frost/Nixon," several Oscar winning actors sent him tapes on how they would play Nixon, but they begged him not to put them on YouTube. Frank Langella was also being considered but the studio wanted a bigger name than Langella's fronting the film. Howard said he always wanted Langella and after he won a Tony for the stage play he got pushed to the front of the casting list for the film.

Some reaction in the blogosphere:

Over at Diary of An Anxious Black Woman, the ABW was very happy about two nominations:

Congratulations to

On Oscar night are we going to see you all glammed up on the arm of a nominee?

With a five year old it's amazing you and your husband get to see anything other than "Sponge Bob."  Congratulations on the movies you have seen.

It is nice to see smaller films and lesser known actors and actresses get their time in the spotlight.

And sometimes they actually do win.

...no.  I did not bring my son to see either Milk or The Dark Knight (my husband and I do have the occasional night out alone).

Let me preface this by saying...pay absolutely no attention to me.  The only nominated films/performances I've seen this year are Milk, The Dark Knight, Kung-Fu Panda, Wall-E & Bolt.  Can you tell from this list why my Oscar viewing is so almighty poor....something about having a 5 year-old boy dictating my viewing, maybe.....

This being said...I am absolutely THRILLED with the indie films and performances and upstarts in the major categories.  Slumdog Millionaire  - will this finally open the US mainstream door to Bollywood (I know it's not strictly Bollywood...but getting there)?  Anne Hathaway, Richard Jenkins (here's to the Late Nate!), Melissa Leo & Frozen River, Mickey Rourke....heck, even though his is a big picture, Gus Van Sant is here.  This is very exciting.  I hope there are some upsets on the big night.

Eventually, I'll get to see everything....and I can't wait.

My Husband worked on Button.

And no, I haven't seen it yet. I'm a bad wife.

I saw Frank Langella on Broadway in "Dracula" and he was something else!  The movie version was not so great, but Langella did what he could in it.

I think Langella and Whoopi were before Ted and Whoopi.  That gal got around, didn't she?  ;-)

You never know, Richard Jenkins does have a shot.  I just think it's a very long one.

As for "Slumdog Millionaire" the only other major nominations it could have gotten would have been for acting and as much as I liked them, I don't think the lead actors (Dev Patel and Freida Pinto) gave Oscar worthy performances.

Now the kids in the movie, they should have been nominated.  They were spectacular.

I never expected Kate Winslet to be nominated for "The Reader" since she was so fabulous in "Revolutionary Road."  "RR" as a movie had it's flaws, but the performances were beyond first class.  Sniff, sniff...sorry Leo.

I understand why you might feel the way you do about "Frost/Nixon."  It seems to be one of those movies that only exists so that it can become Oscar bait.  Like you, I often feel a good documentary serves this kind of topic better than a fictionalized film.  But on that you and I are in the minority of the movie going public.

I saw trailers for "The Visitor" but I never got around to seeing the movie.  I'll definitely have to now.

And it is surprising Bruce Springsteen wasn't nominated.

I loved Benjamin Button, but then I'm biased since I'm here in New Orleans.

I want to see Doubt, the Reader, Frost Nixon, Milk, and Revolutionary Road. After naming that many movies I that I haven't seen, I now feel deprived.

I remember when Frank Langella played Dracula.  I was a teen and loved how he flipped off the cape.  Smoking!

I didn't know about Langella and Whoopi.  I only knew about Whoopi and Ted Danson.

I'm a little surprised that Slumdog Millionaire didn't get more nominations. Thrilled that Richard Jenkins got a nomination. Wouldn't it be amazing if he won! A stretch, I know...but, occasionally the Academy does surprise us. And YES, I think Leonardo got robbed. He was amazing in Revolutionary Road. And Kate Winslet for The Reader instead is puzzling. I also thought Revolutionary Road deserved a Best Picture nominiation.

I am a bit heartbroken that Revolutionary Road got so few nominations. Kate's performance especially was just amazing. I loved her in The Reader as well, but RR was one to remember for me. I've heard such mixed reviews for that film. I happen to fall into the category that loved the film, so the lack of nominations really bothered me all morning.

What I'm most unsatisfied with is Frost/Nixon. I really don't believe there is anything remarkable about that film. It's just another Ron Howard movie that has good quality and good performances, but nothing about it screamed "Oscar!" to me. I told a friend afterwards that I would have been just as well off if I just watched a documentary about it and then watched the actual interview.

Ben Button (as my friend and I call it) was a good movie with amazing effects, but I think that many nominations is a bit of overkill.

Overall I just feel let down about it, which stinks because I get really excited about it every year and try to see every film that has a nomination associated with it.

I was very happy to see Richard Jenkins nominated for "The Visitor" which is the best film I've seen this year (though I haven't seen most of the nominated films). I was disappointed though that Bruce Springsteen who won the Golden Globe wasn't nominated for Best Song for "The Wrestler."
