Halloween is rolling around again, and my kid is now old enough to voice an opinion on his costume. I love Halloween. I love to get dressed-up and see other people dressed-up and seeing little kids dressed-up makes me all teary-eyed.
This year, I tried to get Jack to want to be a frog since I have this cute frog costume a friend gave me. He said no. I tried to sweeten the deal by telling him I could make it a really cool dinosaur costume. Still, no. He tells me he wants to be ... wait for it ... Baby Superman Jack. I'm relieved as superman = superhero = cape + maybe a mask. Am I right?
Capes can be as easy or as hard as you want them to be, and they're great because they work for all ages and everything can potentially wear a cape -- princesses, ghosts, superheroes, jewel thieves, hobbits, elves, fairies, etc.
Puking Pastilles has a nice tutorial on her blog, and you can buy the pattern for $3.99 from her Etsy shop. Her capes are double-sided, making it easy for kids to switch from one identity to another.
I'm also for plowing ahead with no pattern. If you can't sew, no problem. Go to the local fabric store and buy some fleece! Here's a good tutorial for a no-sew kids Halloween cape.
A good theme costume can be really fun too. I like it especially when a bunch of kids in a pack all go together. Liz Henry wrote up a bunch of great ideas for making Plants Vs. Zombies costumes. It makes me happy to imagine a bunch of kid zombies wandering around with construction cone party hats on.
I recently stumbled on a blog called Filth Wizardry that has so many really great preschooler art activities. She has created an amazing storm trooper helmet out of milk jugs (and tutorial) that will work for all ages and looks spectacular.
You gotta love Susan Beal's kid's Yoda costume from last year. So precious!
If you can knit, you can always get the pattern to knit a Princess Leia wig.
What costumes are you and your family wearing this year? Do you make your own?
Love, Minnie
