I am a little bit obsessed with lip balm -- I carry at least three in my handbag at any time, in addition to a couple of glosses and a lipstick (although I only wear the lipstick for Special Dress Up Occasions, and even then it only lasts through the first cocktail -- then it's back to the lip balm). I am constantly on the lookout for the Perfect Lip Balm, one that is creamy and light, all at once, and leaves my lips feeling pampered and smooth, and doesn't cost a fortune.
Here are my favorites:
Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm: Bills itself as "soothing, cooling, refreshing," and indeed it is all three, at once. The perfect texture (not too heavy but not too light) with a delicious minty vanilla finish, this is a reliable mid-day pick-me-up balm (although I have to say that I can't wear it in the morning when I'm drinking coffee -- something about minty fresh lip balm and a strong French roast just don't go together). Available in drugstores for about $3.00 a tube.
Kiss My Face Sheer Organic Shimmer: A lipstick for girls who don't like lipstick -- the color is truly sheer and natural (I've been wearing the Amythest Shimmer, which is a very light plum shade, with just the right amount of shine) and the texture is creamy and light. Like the Burt's Bees, this balm has just a hint of minty vanilla. And, to make it even better, Kiss My Face's Sheer Organic Shimmers are "earth friendly products containing no parabens, SLS, phthalates, synthetic colors or flavors." Available in six shades for $4.95 each at the Kiss My Face Webstore.
Clinique Superbalm Moisturizing Gloss: It's a balm! It's a gloss! It's the best of BOTH worlds, in a cute little tube that fits right in your pocket! Wear it alone for long-lasting moisture and subtle color, or layer it over a lipstick to take off that parched feeling (you know what I mean). Available in 12 versatile shades for $13.50 -- it's a worthwhile splurge (I alternate between Currant and Raspberry, both of which are subtle and wearable).
To get the most out of your lip balm, exfoliate regularly -- after you wash your face at night, gently brush lips with a soft toothbrush, or rub (gently!) with a washcloth (I use one of those wee baby ones, that new moms get as shower gifts -- seriously). Slather with a rich balm (I usually go with Aquaphor at night, for maximum moisturizing and healing).

Rachel Sarnoff dishes about organic lip balms in biodegradeable packaging. Cool!
And Holly Burns finds the perfect lips -- at the drugstore!
Your turn -- what's YOUR go-to lip balm? Will I like it? Because I'm always looking.
