Best Lip Balms - Because Valentine's Day is a Good Excuse to Smooch Someone

I am a little bit obsessed with lip balm -- I carry at least three in my handbag at any time, in addition to a couple of glosses and a lipstick (although I only wear the lipstick for Special Dress Up Occasions, and even then it only lasts through the first cocktail -- then it's back to the lip balm).  I am constantly on the lookout for the Perfect Lip Balm, one that is creamy and light, all at once, and leaves my lips feeling pampered and smooth, and doesn't cost a fortune.

Here are my favorites:

Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm: Bills itself as "soothing, cooling, refreshing," and indeed it is all three, at once.  The perfect texture (not too heavy but not too light) with a delicious minty vanilla finish, this is a reliable mid-day pick-me-up balm (although I have to say that I can't wear it in the morning when I'm drinking coffee -- something about minty fresh lip balm and a strong French roast just don't go together).  Available in drugstores for about $3.00 a tube.

Kiss My Face Sheer Organic ShimmersKiss My Face Sheer Organic Shimmer: A lipstick for girls who don't like lipstick -- the color is truly sheer and natural (I've been wearing the Amythest Shimmer, which is a very light plum shade, with just the right amount of shine) and the texture is creamy and light.  Like the Burt's Bees, this balm has just a hint of minty vanilla.  And, to make it even better, Kiss My Face's Sheer Organic Shimmers are "earth friendly products containing no parabens, SLS, phthalates, synthetic colors or flavors."  Available in six shades for $4.95 each at the Kiss My Face Webstore.

Clinique Superbalm Moisturizing Gloss: It's a balm!  It's a gloss!  It's the best of BOTH worlds, in a cute little tube that fits right in your pocket!  Wear it alone for long-lasting moisture and subtle color, or layer it over a lipstick to take off that parched feeling (you know what I mean).  Available in 12 versatile shades for $13.50 -- it's a worthwhile splurge (I alternate between Currant and Raspberry, both of which are subtle and wearable).

To get the most out of your lip balm, exfoliate regularly -- after you wash your face at night, gently brush lips with a soft toothbrush, or rub (gently!) with a washcloth (I use one of those wee baby ones, that new moms get as shower gifts -- seriously).  Slather with a rich balm (I usually go with Aquaphor at night, for maximum moisturizing and healing).

Concerned about the ingredients in your lip balm?  Chris has suggestions for natural options.

Rachel Sarnoff dishes about organic lip balms in biodegradeable packaging.  Cool!

And Holly Burns finds the perfect lips -- at the drugstore!

Your turn -- what's YOUR go-to lip balm? Will I like it?  Because I'm always looking.

I'm a BIG fan of Body Shop's Vit E lip balm. Have been using it for a few years now and never found a replacement that works as good or even better. Kudos to that!!

And I thought I was the only one! I carry three as well although all of them are not quite colored they are different to me!

Day time I use Kiehl's lip gloss which somehow performs the usual lip balm routine.

Special occasion I use Clinique orangy pink colored gloss (Almost evening)

On a date I always go with Benefit -- Who Are You Wearing? Honestly, it's like my favorite! It smells so good even I would kiss myself!

Note: This is my personal preference though :P

Burts Bees was my drug lip balm of choice for the longest time, but then I found it started drying my lips out! So right now I don't have a fave but I do like Chap Stick 100% Naturals, ans honestly at night I put pertoleum jelly on my lips, works like magic!

I just had to give a shout-out for C.O. Bigelow's Mentha Lip Tints ( http://www.bigelowchemists.com/index.php/cPath/356... ). They also feel light and double as breath refreshers with the mint. The downside is that they are around $7 a tube... kind of a pricey habit! :-) I tried to break the habit by making my own lip gloss ( http://conscientiousconfusion.blogspot.com/2008/08... ). It turned out OK, but I have to say I still like store-bought better. I am going to try that Kiss Your Face brand you recommended, for sure!

Hi Susan,

I am a fan of Burt's Bees because I find the minty fresh flavor seems to suppress my appetite.

As you said, the minty flavor does not go with coffee nor does it go with the unhealthy mid-afternoon snacks that are always floating around my office. I seem to snack less and only eat when I am truly hungry.

I am a huge Burt's Bees fan.  I keep a tube of Lip Shimmer in the car at all times.

I was given Avons Moisture lip for chirstmas and it is a bit sticky for me.

My new fave-fave is Soft lips.  Not to greasy and the pearl gives you a little shimmer.

I really like MACs Slimshine Lipstick...it's really a balm with slight color. It's quite moisturizing and the colors and really pretty; I like Most Wanted. Or you can get no color at all, just shine.

I also love love love Zim's Crack Creme. It's cheap ($3.99 for two tubes); it tastes like cherry not medicine; it works amazingly well and FAST; and you can find it at any Longs, CVS, or online at http://www.crackcreme.com/ ( http://www.crackcreme.com/ ). Plus the name just (wait for it) CRACKS me up! Ha ha ha ha ha.
