Best Mascara Ever - Do You Have One?

Do you love your mascara?  If you said yes, I envy you -- I've been searching for The Perfect Mascara for a long time now, and I'm still looking.  I have one that I like, but I don't love it.  And since mascara is a big part of my makeup routine, I would like to find that Perfect Formula that I could really be passionate about.

And yes, I do need to get a life.

I have pretty specific demands for my mascara: I want it to lengthen and thicken my lashes, and it has to be waterproof, or at least non-smudgy.  I have oily skin and with most washable mascaras, I wind up with gigantic dark circles by the end of the day.  And that is NOT sexy.

While I feel like I have tried every mascara currently manufactured, I know this is not the truth.  Right now I'm alternating between two different options, Clinique High Impact Mascara ($14.00 at your local Clinique counter) and Maybelline Full 'N Soft Waterproof Mascara (about $7.00 at the drugstore).  While they're both fine, I feel certain there is something BETTER than fine out there.  Somewhere.

The Clinique mascara lasts all day, despite the fact that it's not a waterproof formula; it doesn't flake or smudge or smear.   It makes my lashes look long and thick.  But after about eight weeks, it starts to dry out, which is really a bummer.

The Maybelline mascara, on the other hand, is a very low-maintenance look; it's natural and non-makeup-y.  This formula doesn't lengthen or thicken, it just coats your existing lashes, which is a nice alternative for days when you want some definition but not a full eye.  However, this "waterproof" formula not only washes off with soap and water but smudges something fierce; every time I wear it I wind up with dark circles under my eyes (and no, I'm not putting it on my lower lashes).  That's a deal breaker for me, honestly.

And yes, I see you in the back there, waving your hands around, because you are just DYING to recommend Dior's DiorShow, because it's The Perfect Mascara! and totally worth the $24.00 price tag!  And I should try it TODAY because it will Change My Life!  Right?

I've tried it.  Eh.  It was fine.  It smudged (YES REALLY) and for that kind of money, not only should it stay put on my lashes, it should bring me a cocktail, too.

What I am looking for is this: long wearing, easily removeable mascara that lenthens AND thickens my lashes without smudging or flaking.  In other words, the Holy Grail of mascara.

I've been searching blogs for suggestions (because the Internet has ALL the answers to EVERYTHING, don't you know?) and I've found the following: Simply Pink loves Maybelline's The Collosal Volum' Express (it seems to me that I tried this one and didn't like it, but I might just have been put off by the misspelling of "volume").  Lovelyish gives Chanel's Inimitable Mascara a big thumbs down.  "It did nothing wonderful to my lashes, there's no volumizing effect, and it smudges easily (although claimed to be waterproof)."  And B at Clumps of Mascara (which might be the best beauty blog name EVER) is singing the praises of Max Factor Volume Couture (and look, volume is spelled correctly! hooray!).

Your turn -- what's the best mascara for picky girls?  I'm desperate over here.

Kiss Me?

March 9, 2009 - 12:08pm

Have you tried the Blinc Kiss Me that Jen wrote about and Kris_FreshFocus reviewed? Totally worth checking out!

Kiss Me Rocks

March 9, 2009 - 2:16pm

I came here to recommend Kiss Me too.  I used to always get raccoon eyes when I wore traditional mascara.  It NEVER happens, now that I've switched.  It's a little different from regular mascara in that you can't layer it - you only get one coat - but it's awesome.  Truly awesome.  I can even sleep in my mascara and not wake up with raccoon eyes the next morning (not recommended, but of course it happens - I have kids!).

Try a tube.  It's worth every penny.

Benefit Bad Gal

March 9, 2009 - 12:29pm

I love love love the Benefit Bad Gal Mascara.  I love the blue version as well as the black (and I need waterproof formulas too - which both colors come in).  My one problem is that it does seem to dry out faster than other mascaras I've had, which, at $19 a pop is less than ideal.  So I've been trying other mascaras - a million others, it seems like, but I've yet to find anything I like half as much.  So I may be heading back to the Benefit and just considering it the cost of doign business...

Lash Exact!

March 9, 2009 - 12:45pm

Whoorl told me about Lash Exact and I have to admit that I love it.  No clumping!

Voluminous!

March 9, 2009 - 12:56pm

Hands down the best mascara is Loreal Voluminous. It doesn't smudge or flake and it makes my lashes long and thick. I've tried all kinds of mascara that claim to be flake proof but none are as good as Voluminous. I can't wear anything that flakes due to an eye condition I have. I think it's just around $8 and it lasts quite a while.

I've been usung the new

March 9, 2009 - 1:32pm

I've been usung the new Loreal Double Extend for a few weeks and I love it almost as much as I loved the Neutrogena stuff I used to use that they don't make anymore.  It doesn't clump, and doesn't smudge at. all.  My only complaint is that it is a two step process, you have to put on the "lash conditioner" and then the mascara (And it doesn't work well without the conditioner, I tried).

Cover Girl Lash Blast Mascara

March 9, 2009 - 2:22pm

My husband and two sons have long, beautiful lashes.  I don’t.  Such is
life.  Every few months, I try a new mascara.  This is still my current
favorite.  It actually makes my lashes look full (with no yucky
clumps).

Dempsey

March 9, 2009 - 3:58pm

I don't try many things from Avon, but I tried the mascara that's by Patrick Dempsey's wife and really like it.  It has 2 brushes - one for upper lashes and an itty bitty one for lower lashes.  The mascara for lower lashes is smudge and flake free.  It's the only one I've tried in a long time that didn't give me raccoon eyes by early afternoon.

Oh Susan, this is my area of

March 9, 2009 - 5:06pm

Oh Susan, this is my area of expertise! If I had a penny for every mascara I've bought over the years, I'd.......probably be able to buy even more mascara.

My current fave is L'Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes, which I wrote about here: http://nothingbutbonfires.com/?q=node/604. Suffice to say, I love it.

A close runner-up is L'Oreal Bare Naturale (very natural looking, just like the name!) in Barely Black. I have no particular allegiance to L'Oreal; these two just happen to be my go-tos at the moment.

I'm also a big fan of Max Factor's Voluminash (I think that's what it's called -- it's in a dark grey tube and there's something about volume in there. Actually, I've liked every Max Factor mascara I've ever tried.)

Let us know how you get on!

Wait! I just read the other

March 9, 2009 - 5:09pm

Wait! I just read the other comments (duh) and Kayobe nailed it -- it's Voluminous! And I guess it's not made by Max Factor after all, but by L'Oreal (AGAIN). I swear, I'm not being paid by L'Oreal -- I guess they just make good mascara!

(I do like all the Max Factor ones I've tried too, though I can't seem to remember any names at the moment.)

This is why I love the Internet

March 9, 2009 - 7:50pm

I am making a list and tomorrow I will be heading for the drugstore.  Thank you, girls!

Who else has suggestions?  I'm listening!

I totally copied Holly

March 9, 2009 - 8:21pm

After Holly recommended it on her blog, I TOTALLY went out and bought the L'Oreal Beauty Tubes, because I was too cheap to buy the much more expensive (in my opinion) Kiss Me brand. I have tried quite a few types of mascara - always struggling with the flaking and bleeding down my face. I do not like to do waterproof - I hate how it goes on and find it so obnoxious to get off.

I was very impressed with the Beauty Tubes - I would make some changes to the brush to help it apply better, but no flaking and it comes off easier easily.

Now, who has recommendations for eyeliner that won't bleed? I need some help there!

Maybelline Define-a-Lash

March 9, 2009 - 8:30pm

Seriously, I have my mom's thin lashes and I've tried EVERYTHING!  I got this one and I don't even have to use the waterproof version.  LOVE IT.

Liking my lashes...

March 9, 2009 - 8:48pm

...with either Covergirl Lash Exact or Lash Blast. I used to use the YSL Luxurious formula in the gold tube, but honestly, I don't miss it. It's also not economical b/c you're supposed to replace mascara by the 3 month mark and it's pretty expensive.  I will say that no matter what you wear on your lashes, I think you get the best effect when you use a little eyeliner as well. Even if nobody else realizes it's there, they will notice your eyes more :-)

Re: bleeding eyeliner

March 9, 2009 - 8:55pm

OK, I think that has a lot to do with skin type...for example, my friend with dry skin can use the same exact everything as me, but it will stay put all day with almost no touch ups.

I have had great success, however, by patting Laura Mercier's translucent powder around my eyes after they are done (it's meant for shine, so either way, it is going to keep things matte and oilfree). I also never apply my eyeliner to bare skin. I spread a tiny bit of the YSL Touche Eclat concealer first, then some kind of light eyeshadow (even if it is imperceptible), then the liner on top.

My liners are all by Clinique (I know, middle school, but they are cheap and glide on well) and twist up so that I don't have to sharpen them.

best mascara ever? i think it depends on the look you want

March 10, 2009 - 7:07am

One of the members at BeautyStat.com started a discussion on mascara and this is what she said...

"As of right now I've been using L'oreal Bare Natural for long and
thicker lashes. I like it, but I feel  like there has to be something
better! I have small eyelashes and would like lengthening yet thickening products. I'm also a fan of Covergirl Lash Exact"

I was all pumped up

March 10, 2009 - 11:05am

to tell you to try DiorShow Blackout--I mean, I even got my cheapo mom hooked on this stuff--then I continued reading.

Now I'm deflated.

However, I will say that I conducted a very accurate scienfitically approved mascara trial (at home in my bathroom), and the closest drugstore option to the thickening and lenthening power of DiorShow with no smudging was, in fact, L'Oreal Voluminous. Despite my love of overpriced designer mascara, I usually keep a tube of Voluminous on hand for unexpected eyelash emergencies. 'Cause you just never know...

Imju Fiberwig

March 10, 2009 - 12:01pm

 Susan,

You said not having clumping was key, and that you wanted to avoid smudging and Racoon Eyes.  I have the solution.  IF you can live with it being your "everyday" mascara.....not your VaVaVoom Saturday Night Mascara.

It is Fiberwig:  http://www.dailygrommet.com/products/3-Imju-Fiberwig-Mascara

You can watch us talk about it on the video above--I mean Daily Grommet.  But be kind...this was only the third video Joanne and I ever made and we were so nervous we were nauseous.

L'Oreal Voluminous!

March 10, 2009 - 3:00pm

Another one recommending L'Oreal Voluminous. I love it and find that the waterproof is in fact quite waterproof. I even wear it in the ocean or white water rafting and have no smudges. Good luck with the search! :)

You have no idea ...

March 11, 2009 - 4:30am

how happy this comment thread makes me.  You all are the best.

Next week, we're going to talk about eye liner, okay?  And I'll be reporting back about the mascara.  AND you can ALL post your OWN hacks about liner and mascara and anything else that strikes your fancy, right here at BeautyHacks.  Please!

Collosal Volum' Express

March 11, 2009 - 10:05am

Definitely agree on that one!  Mascara is my beauty holy grail (due to some oily skin issues, it never stays), and I'm very happy with this one.  It's very hard to get it to clump, it stays on even if I overheat, and lasts for a full day.

THE BEST IS MAC!!

March 15, 2009 - 5:33pm

i recommend MAC Plushlash or Fiberlash.  both formulas plump and lengthen to the extremes and i have yet to have a problem with them smudging.  good luck in your quest and please let us know what you find!!

Drug Store Beauty episode/Mascara Must Have

March 15, 2009 - 10:52pm

We're working on a three-part series on Six Minute Style on cosmetics (drug store, department store and splurge) to determine best buys and recommedations. To date, we've filmed the drug store beauty episode and all our research has shown that the very best mascara is ... Maybelline Great Lash (yes, the pink bottle with the green cap that we all knew and loved in high school). We surveyed users, make-up artists and did a thorough search on the Web and in beauty books.

Adding to my conviction was the fact that when I was acting in Denver and Los Angeles most of the on-set make-up artists were using this very brand. I was off-set buying Mac and other pricey brands, yet the pros were completely content with the drug store variety.

I have to admit, we have yet to research the new "tubes" and are looking forward to seeing if they are worth all the buzz and excitement. I'll keep you posted. In the meantime, you can check out "Drug Store Beauty" on the Six Minute Style site at http://sixminutestyle.com/PE_July2008_DrugStoreBeauty.html.

If you have department store and/or splurge cosmetic recommendations, I'd love to hear them as we are prepping now for the other two episodes.

I just purchased Rimmel's

March 26, 2009 - 1:23pm

I just purchased Rimmel's Glam Eyes and Lycra Lash Extender. I put the Glam Eyes on first, because it has this awesome applicator that separates your lashes like nothing I have ever seen before. Then I put the Lycra Lash Extender over it. Looks great for dramatic eyes. Glam Eyes by itself is good for everyday. Love this stuff, doesnt smear. I wore it to bed ( I know I'm bad) and only then, in the morning, did I have some under my eyes. But I wear it all day and it goes no where. I have oily skin too.

They can be purchased at the drugstores, about $7 each and Rimmel is buy one get one free alot at my local Walgreens.

HTH!!

Too Faced Lash Injection

April 11, 2009 - 10:04am

I have the solution for you!  Have you tried Too Faced Lash injection?  It is great.  There are two formulas and I recommend using them both together.  First, use the regular lash injection.  It is waterproof, has an enormous brush, and the formula is both lengthening and volumizing.  It is a beauty tube formula, so it stays on very well, and does a great job creating that doe-eyed look.  After use apply one coat of the regular Lash Injection to the top lashes only, I would apply the Pinpoint Lash Injection (smaller brush, slightly different formula with more of a lengthening effect) to the tips of the top lashes and all of the bottom lashes, you will have a great, clump-free effect that, I swear, looks like a very classy version of flase eyelashes.  I have had so many people compliment me on my lashes while using this combination.  The lashes are high-impact, but they don't scream "look at all the mascara I'm wearing."  It just looks like you are blessed with knock-out lashes.

Both are available at Ulta or Sephora.  Good luck and I hope this helps!

YSL - Faux Cil is THE BEST

April 23, 2009 - 2:20pm

Aaaah, I may wear a strip of lashes when I wear makeup.......I know mascara!

Yves Saint Laurent's Faux Cil Mascara is worth every penny. ($28.50)

Wipe the wand once a week with tissue paper (not tissue!) and YOUR mascara will last 3 months.  Oh yeah....3 months.  Umm, throw your mascara and do your eyes a favor.  Hmm, save $10 a month and there you go.  (in other words, pack your lunch for 1 or 2 days and save your lunch money)

Lancome - Definicils

May 29, 2009 - 5:10am

I read thru the entire string of posts and was surprised no one mentioned Lancome's Definicils.  I have long but thin lashes and it does what a mascara should.  LOVE LOVE LOVE this mascara.  Although it does come in wateproof I don't use it as I've never had a problem with smuging or flaking.

Mascara and YOU

August 21, 2009 - 11:39pm

I've tried many of the "best" mascaras, have close friends in the make-up industry and have a mother who enjoys products as much as I do. What I've realized is:

Every person's lash preferences are their own. One mascara doesn't suit every lash.

I'm a big fan of Maybelline Lash Stylist-- I love the comb wand and have received several compliments on the streets of Manhattan wearing it due to intense length and separation of lashes.

I entirely agree with your take on DiorShow.  This is the world's most overrated mascara. Whoever they've paid to plug them is doing an amazing job in selling this blah product.

Good luck in finding what works for you!
