Blog this today: How many women's lives can we save with donations from the BlogHer community, between now and Mother's Day?

BlogHers Act: Donate Now to Save Women's LivesHow many women's lives can we save with donations from the BlogHer community, between now and Mother's Day, May 11, 2008? If you will download this widget today and encourage your readers to donate, we can find out. Won't you join us?

Here's what we're up to: As part of our BlogHers Act commitment to make a difference on the issue of maternal health, BlogHer has joined forces with Global Giving to help save women's lives and we need your help.

I'm really proud of the work the BlogHer community has done in the last six months, blogging about serious issues related to maternal health and supporting legislation to help American women suffering from post-partum depression.

Now it's time for us to take it to the next level and work with our readers to raise money to support organizations working on the most crucial issues in global maternal health:

Our Maternal Health Projects:

* Mother and Child Clinic in Nepal: $10 - 2 days' operating costs for the Clinic OR a year's worth of care for 5 women and children

* Help Afghan Women Deliver Healthy Babies Safely: $25 - 20 women will have improved quality of life through reproductive healthcare and education

* Ensure Healthcare for 40,000+ Displaced Darfurians: $25 - Trains 2 Traditional Birthing Attendants (includes 3 training sessions and training materials)

* Empower Women to End HIV/AIDS Stigma, South Africa: $50 - 2 women living with HIV/AIDS can receive counseling

* Noon Meal Improves Girls' Learning in Burkina Faso: $15 - Provides a noon meal for 50 students for one day.

Take Action Now:

1) Grab a button or donation widget to place on your blog.

2) Share this information with your readers by blogging about maternal health, or this BlogHers Act initiative, or the individual project you're supporting.

3) Leave your link at the bottom of this post, using Mr Linky, so
others can hear your thoughts on these issues. (We'll also be featuring
many of you on BlogHer.com and in our newsletters.)

4) Donate to save women's lives, today.

Visit our information page to get great information on why women across the world need your help:

* Every year, 529,000 women die from pregnancy-related causes.
* Children who have lost their mothers are up to 10 more times more likely to die prematurely than those who haven’t.
* More than 80 per cent of maternal deaths worldwide are due to five
direct causes: haemorrhage, sepsis, unsafe abortion, obstructed labour
and hypertensive disease of pregnancy.
* Most maternal deaths (61 per cent) take place during labour, delivery
or in the immediate post-partum period. Some 3.4 million newborns die
within the first week of life.

As someone who is like a broken record about the extraordinary power of women who read and write blogs, I'm excited to see what we can do together. Thank you in advance for your help -- I encourage you to blog this now: BlogHer's powerful community and GlobalGiving kick off donation initiative to save women's lives in Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Darfur, Nepal, South Africa.

I'm proud to be part of a community that speaks for and invests in other women. Let's do this.

This is a worthy cause...

By: KellyMac

but why are women the only ones worth helping? Aren't the UN and WHO focussed primarily on how various world issues affect women already?

Wouldn't our time be better spent in finding a way to hold everyone to the same standards, and working for the health and survival of ALL people?

Absolutely in places where there is Taliban or Taliban-type rule, women are suffering, big time. And the leaders of those governments and religions are men. But the men who aren't the leaders also suffer. It's not like they're all living like sheiks and sultans while their women are waiting on them hand and foot.

I don't know. I just look around me and it seems like everyone has their "cross to bear", so to speak. Why can't we work together as men and women instead of each focussing on how bad his or her own gender has it?

I've blogged it and am spreading the word as best I can. We really can make difference together.

KellyMac this was a decision by the blogher community, made at last year's conference. You can read about it here.

It's sad the conditions so many women live in around the world. I blogged it and linked it here.

Thank you for reminding us of the need.

This is fantastic

By: Karianna

I briefly blogged about this and am eager to participate. My well-travelled relatives have often told me fascinating stories about the various organizations they have seen in action where a little money goes a very long way.

Donated.

By: Liz Rizzo

And it is so cool how the widget immediately shows your donation!

I put the widget on my blog, but I'm going to have to wait a beat to blog it - Too many money requests too close together otherwise, and I don't want people to get turned off.

I blog at Everyday Goddess.

It does immediately show your donation

By: Vered

Which is great b/c you can see the impact your donation has made on the total right away.

This is a great idea, and one that is set up very nicely.  Thanks for all your work behind the scenes to get this ready.  I blogged about it today and will blog more about it in the next few days.  This is really important.

Thank you for the opportunity!

Thank you, Susan

Just... thank you. For this.

And so part of me wants to write here about the good in the world, to increase its power and its reach until there is enough leaking out to heal me (selfish!) and to wrap my boys in comfort, and to be a better place when they grow up. I have always wanted to make the world a better place, and part of my frustration with this disease now is that it has me powerless and stuck - again - in bed as my body fights the cell death and tries to recover from the tens of MeV of radiation that we assult it with daily.

Really. Thank you. You are making the world a better place.

This does feel good.

Denise, I blogged it, I tweeted it, I donated, and I'll blog again tomorrow ... but it seems like so little in the face of such huge issues.

Projects like this are amazing;a great use of blogger (time and talent) resources!

An organization helping women

By: L_elle

I love that your encouraging people to help woman centric non profit organizations.

I found some great videos about non profit organizations around the world that are helping mothers and educating third world countries on healthy pregnancy and healthy lives. The link below will take you to a video about a group called Mothers 2 Mothers.(sorry the link button wasn't working"

http://72.3.245.233/video.php?vid=153&category=32&l=Women&organization=u...

Hopefully this video will inspire people to see that there are groups out there making a difference, they start small and slowly can help this huge issue.

Better Than Nothing

By: SocalMom

OK, I'm a day late AND I lifted a lot of my post from here -- but I've got the widget and am doing my part to spread the word. Thank you for reminding me that my little corner of the world isn't so bad, and giving us an easy opportunity to improve the lives of others.

It took me a while...

By: smtwngrl5

But I'm finally up-to-date on all my blog reading. Which means I've gotten on track for the Mother's Day challenge. In fact, I've asked my readers to get involved and I'm looking forward to spreading the word about these great causes.

Thanks for the motivation to do something positive for the women of the world.
