A creepy duo of faceless people have been appearing all over London lately, raising the interest of bloggers and news crews alike, though apparently not worrying those around them much. An article at the MailonSunday website says mysterious faceless people have been spotted at such A-list events as Wimbledon, Henley Regatta, the Harrods sale, and Elton John's White Tie and Tiara Ball.

The MailonSunday website conjectures that they may be "at the centre of a viral marketing campaign for an as-yet unknown product of forthcoming horror film." One astute Brit at the MetaFilter community forums pointed out that the date it's counting down to is the day before the opening of the British International Motor Show, and suggests it may be a promotion for the upcoming Lotus Eagle.

According to this video report on Yahoo! they might be linked with a viral advertising campaign on behalf of Lotus Cars. The key bit of evidence supporting this theory is the website facelesspeople.com - which features nothing more than a countdown indicating that "TRUE CHARACTER WILL EMERGE IN (insert countdown here)."

The facelesspeople.com site also gives visitors an opportunity to find out more, rewarding those brave enough to provide an email address with a thank you, and the promise that "when true character emerges, you will be one of the first to know."

The evidence pointing towards Lotus increases when you compare the enigmatic badges the faceless duo are wearing in photos of them at Wimbledon to the Lotus insignia floating at the bottom of the facelesspeople.com homepage. The color scheme is slightly different but there is no denying the similarity in shape.

Coincidence? I think not! I guess we'll know for sure when I'm rewarded with information at the email address I provided. In a case of viral advertising, these faceless people win a prize for spreading their virus all the way from London to Los Angeles!

AskPatty was present this morning at the grand opening of the Shell Hydrogen station in Santa Monica. This marks the first public hydrogen fueling station at a conventional gas station in California, and is the third hydrogen station Shell has open to American consumers. (Shell also operates stations in New York, and Washington, D.C.)

Officiating at the launch, City of Los Angeles Councilman Bill Rosendahl said, "I am delighted that today, with support from Shell, we are able to continue to grow a safe and secure hydrogen infrastructure, that enables fuel cell vehicles to refuel more conveniently, as we move towards the future commercialization of clean transportation technology." Councilman Rosendahl was quite a dynamic host, jovially hamming up a fuel fill for the cameras, and animatedly expressing his appreciation for Mother Earth.

It was a pretty big event, attended by more than 50 television news and pressfolk, as this station is one more small step towards realizing California's "Hydrogen Highway" as envisioned by Arnold Schwarzenegger ever since he took the office of Governator in a State of the State Address on January 6, 2004 by promising: "I am going to encourage the building of a hydrogen highway to take us to the environmental future... I intend to show the world that economic growth and the environment can coexist."

As a further example of the eco-friendly importance of this station, Hydrogen supplied here is produced on-site by the electrolysis of water using 'green electricity' purchased from the Los Angeles City Department of Water & Power. It will then be compressed and stored to provide daily fueling. The 350-bar station can produce up to 30 Kilograms of hydrogen each day, and can store up to 40 Kg in three ASME steel vessels. This is enough to fill three hydrogen vehicles back to back to back, or five to seven vehicles within a 24-hour period. The entire production and storage facility is housed on top of the canopy covering the pumps.

Graeme Sweeney, Executive Vice President for Shell Future Fuels and CO2 said: "California is leading the way with clean fuels, as it moves one step closer to realizing its hydrogen program, FCVs powered by hydrogen will provide a sustainable transportation choice for the future, opening up new markets across the globe. This requires the sustained effort of energy companies, auto manufacturers and federal and state governments working together. We are pleased to be playing our part to help develop a safe and reliable fueling infrastructure for future clean energy vehicles, as the only major energy company involved in FCV vehicle demonstrations in all three major hydrogen markets - North America, Japan, and Europe."

In hydrogen vehicles, an electric motor powers the wheels. A chemical reaction - usually between hydrogen and oxygen - inside the vehicle's fuel cell stack creates electricity for the motor. The only tailpipe emission is water vapor, which produces zero carbon emissions and has the potential to significantly reduce air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and protect against climate change. Hydrogen fuel will be priced at approximately double the current cost of premium fuel, since it delivers about twice the range of the equivalent amount of gasoline. Shell says this pricing structure is intended to ensure that it costs no more to fuel a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle than a traditional gasoline vehicle.

California already has more fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) and hydrogen refueling stations than any other part of the world, and last year recorded 1.5 million zero emission miles from hydrogen FCV trials. Twenty-five hydrogen stations (from a variety of fuel providers) currently operate in California, most in the San Francisco-Sacramento corridor and the Greater Los Angeles and San Diego regions, serving more than a hundred fuel cell passenger vehicles and transit buses, with ten more stations already in the planning stages.

General Motors plans to use the station to provide fuel for participants in "Project Driveway" - a three-year trial that puts Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell-Electric compact SUVs in the hands of private and commercial customers in Southern California to show the vehicles in real-world driving conditions. Other car manufacturers introducing FCVs into the Los Angeles area -- such as the Honda Clarity, BMW Hydrogen 7-Series, and perhaps even the Volkswagen HyMotion Tiguan -- will also be able to refuel at the station. More importantly, the presence of the hydrogen station on busy Santa Monica Boulevard also helps identify the element as a safe and functional option to neighbors and commuters who pass by on their way to and from the 405 freeway. The station will also maintain a public visitor's center that explains how the hydrogen is made and stored.

James J. Provenzano, President of the 40 year-old public advocacy group Clean Air Now added: "This is a very exciting development. With this station, Shell is helping to usher in the hydrogen age. We are very pleased to be working with a large oil company to demonstrate zero-pollution transportation technologies. Hats off to Shell for implementing innovative solutions to mitigate air pollution right here in Los Angeles."

We agree! Hats off to Shell! Thanks for getting us one step further onto the California Hydrogen Highway!

If you live in California or Washington, you know that as of next week you must go handsfree when using your cellphone while driving your car. On July 1, 2008, these two states will be the fourth and fifth states to enact a law that bans the use of any hand-held mobile device while driving.

When it goes into effect, the California law will also prohibit ALL cell-phone use -- including hands-free devices and texting -- by drivers under the age of 18. Violators will face a possible $20 fine for a first offense, and $50 for subsequent offenses.

The law does allow non-minor drivers to use a wireless telephone for emergency purposes, drivers of commercial vehicles to use push-to-talk phones until July 1, 2011, and drivers of emergency response vehicles to use a cell phone without a hands-free device.

For technophobes, the solution is as simple as stopping off at your favorite wireless store, nearby Radio Shack, or local Target or Walmart to buy an inexpensive wired headset to allow you to make those important calls without the distraction of having to hold your phone. However, if you're a technofan like me, then you know a wireless Bluetooth device is the only way to go.

I confess: my first adventures with Bluetooth earpieces were unpleasant. Sound quality was poor. Callers often complained that I sounded as if I was in a tunnel. We were often bombarded by distracting echoes that made it impossible to talk. The devices became disconnected from my phone so that I would lose my connection mid-call. Battery life and talk time were poor. But that was a couple years ago, and the technology has improved greatly since then. Going wireless with a Bluetooth device is now simple, and offers a variety of choices to fit your personal tastes and technical comfort levels.

Motorola was kind enough to send me three devices to test out, offering a variety of handsfree options for cellphone users. All these handy gadgets feature Bluetooth(R) 2.0 technology promising universal connectivity with most cellphones, improved call quality, less interference, and faster connections than previous standards.

The first handy gadget can be clipped onto your car's visor: The Motorola T305 portable handsfree speaker http://direct.motorola.com/ens/carkits/learn-T305.html is perfect if you don't want to wear your handsfree device (or are afraid you'll lose it in your cavernous purse) and offers as much as 14 hours talk or 200 hours standby time from a single charge (which means it's not the end of the world if you forget to turn it off when you leave the car). Touch one button to turn it on, touch another to place a call; a pair of buttons on the side adjust volume. During my real-world tests, I was able to hookup this this handy palm-sized gadget while sitting at a stoplight, and kept it in my car all week long without depleting its charge. None of my callers complained about sound quality, and I could hear them loud and clear. Official PR materials say it offers "Full duplex capabilities" which means you can talk over each other and still hear, just as in face-to-face conversations. Suggested retail is about $70, and it comes with car and wall chargers. The only drawback is that your cellphone conversations will be shared with all your passengers, so you'll have to do your surprise birthday party planning in a more private location. The device is sensitive enough to pick up most noises in the car, so you'll also want to turn off your radio, roll up your windows, and shush your children to spare your callers from experiencing the full ambience of activity inside your car. You'll also want to be sure you close your sunroof completely when you leave your vehicle to prevent would-be thieves from plucking the useful device off your visor. (Click here to view an online demo http://direct.motorola.com/ens/T305/Headset_Home.asp)

The second device is the lovely and feminine H680 Earpiece in Frost http://tinyurl.com/5x72lp. This attractive earpiece comes with its own charging station and a pretty little satin carry bag, so you'll always be able to find it. Promising talk times up to 9 hours and standby times up to 300 hours, you should be able to wear this device practically all week long without requiring constant recharging. Even though it is meant to be worn in the ear, its small size was designed for women so I found it very comfortable to wear, with a pleasant array of sounds to signal when it was powering up and down, when it was connected to my phone, and when calls were coming in. It boasts a 30-foot range, which means you can leave it in your purse -- or even step out of the car to get your mail out of the box -- without dropping your call. As pretty (and easy to wear) as earrings, it's priced at about $80 on the official Motorola site, though it can be found for less by shopping online at such places as amazon.com. (http://tinyurl.com/4l3jfu)

The third device, the H710 Earpiece, http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/h710/ is a more traditional design that flips open to be turned on and off, and is worn over the ear (as opposed as pressed into it). It promises 25% noise reduction technology that automatically compensates when your surroundings get louder, and its earpiece volume also increases to help combat background noise. It promises talk time of about 6.5 hours or standby time of up to 200 hours, and features a handy illuminating button to indicate how much battery time remains, so you won't be surprised by a dead earpiece. My favorite feature of this headset is that it can be paired to two cellphones at the same time, which means that if you are one of the unlucky ones who must carry both a work and a personal cellphone, you can take calls from both using the same earpiece. Priced just under $100 at the official Motorola site, this earpiece comes with both wall and car chargers, and can be found for much less by shopping online at such places as amazon.com. (http://tinyurl.com/5mxkdw)

I used all these Bluetooth devices extensively during the six weeks prior to writing this review. During that time, I always asked my callers for their feedback, and none of them complained about the issues I had encountered during my previous trials. They all paired quite easily with my own phone, and connected seamlessly when I turned them on for use. They each have specific features that make them useful and can be found at discounted prices online that make them an affordable alternative to a traditional wired headset. Thanks very much to Motorola for sending these items out for our review!

Unfortunately, the minute I turn off my computer, I'm out of touch with the constantly changing traffic landscape, and the radio traffic updates don't help much when stuck in a snarl and it's nine minutes away from the next update. In-dash navigation devices are great for plotting a route, but it's when you're connected to the very latest in technology that you are able to really experience the benefit of LIVE traffic updates.

It was behind the wheel of a Cadillac CTS provided to AskPatty for editorial evaluation that I first experienced XM LIVE traffic: I was on the 101 Freeway when a lovely woman's voice spoke to me to warn of an traffic jam at an upcoming street. The passengers in my car were astounded! A touch upon the nav screen revealed colored lines and alerts to demonstrate various speeds and levels of traffic delay. It was like having our own traffic angel in the car with us.

Well INRIX promises to take live traffic even further with a new product it calls "Total Traffic Fusion," the first traffic data service that intelligently combines real-time, predictive, and historical traffic information for over 800,000 miles of roadways across the United States.

What does that mean in plain English? It means an INRIX-enabled nav system can adjust its route planning solutions to determine accurate arrival times, make adjustments on the fly to keep you traveling on the most optimal routes, determine the best time to start a route, or even trigger alerts on traffic changes ahead of you -- as you drive -- based on real-time info from other drivers uploading their traffic info en route, as well as historical data saved from millions of previous trips.

Need to get to Los Angeles Airport from Long Beach? INRIX can tell you in advance the best time to hit the 405 so you can avoid the dreaded South Bay Curve. (You might not want to leave at Midnight, but that's a different story; at least you'll know in advance exactly what to expect if you have to catch a 3 p.m. flight.)

While it's not available directly to consumers, INRIX http://www.inrix.com/ claims this service will improve in-vehicle automotive applications (such as Ford Sync and other automobile offerings), portable navigation devices that utilize two-way connectivity, certain nav-capable wireless phones and PDA's, as well as internet-based applications such as MapQuest, Yahoo Maps, Google Maps, and MSN Microsoft. INRIX is currently the traffic information provider for such systems and manufacturers as DASH, BMW, Volvo, Garmin, TomTom, and others.

Total Traffic Fusion also promises to provide speed information for busy city streets and congested arterials, in addition to major freeways and the entire U.S. interstate highway system. So, if you're trying to get to a doctor's appointment at Cedars-Sinai, INRIX can warn you before you go to be aware of slowing on Wilshire Blvd. and allow you to choose another street instead. Name another traffic service that can offer you that kind of traffic/navigation solution!

On one hand, having such a system in your car means you'll never be late to another important appointment. On the other hand, it also means you'll never be able to use bad traffic as an excuse again! I can't wait to try it!

Other states prohibiting handheld mobile phone use are Connecticut, the District of Columbia, New Jersey, and New York. When it goes into effect on July 1, 2008, the California law will also prohibit ALL cell-phone use -- including hands-free devices and texting -- by drivers under the age of 18. Meanwhile, the rest of California's drivers regardless of age must go hands-free when using their cell phones by the same deadline. Violators will face a possible $20 fine for a first offense, and $50 for subsequent offenses. Be thankful: in New Jersey, the fine for violating the state's hands-free law is $250 (and $100 for text messaging) - the most expensive hands-free fine in the nation.

The law does allow non-minor drivers to use a wireless telephone for emergency purposes, drivers of commercial vehicles to use push-to-talk phones until July 1, 2011, and drivers of emergency response vehicles to use a cell phone without a hands-free device.

Just for fun: Check out this new hidden camera video from Parrot.com http://www.youtube.com/v/J_T2nj-sczo that captures five different driving instructors going ballistic on a kid who won't stop talking on his cell phone.

Obviously, this kid hasn't heard the rule Arnold Schwarzenegger http://askpatty.typepad.com/ask_patty_/2007/09/schwarzenegger-.html enforced upon his own two teenage daughters. Apparently, according to the California Governator, "I told my daughters: 'I give you the car. I give you the cellphone, but if I see you one time using both at the same time, both of them are gone.' " Schwarzenegger added, " 'The car will be gone for a long time and the phone will be gone for a long time. You go to school with the bus.' They know that." That's tough love, Dad.

According to a statement released by the Office of the Governator, "Distracted driving leads to tens of thousands of car accidents annually, with many of these accidents resulting in serious injuries or even death. Distractions while driving include eating, drinking, changing the radio station, reading and using a cell phone. For many of these distractions, there is no practical alternative other than banning the activity. However, there is a practical alternative to holding a cell phone - using a hands-free device. Hands-free devices are very inexpensive and most new phones come with an earpiece."

So, what's a ban for drivers is a boon for Bluetooth technology providers that specialize in mobile telephone devices and hands-free car kits. "Drivers are now caught in the Bluetooth wave here in the U.S.," says Ed Valdez, President and COO of Parrot, Inc., a supplier of car kits for original equipment and aftermarket installation. "Bluetooth-enabled cell phones accounted for about 70 percent of new phones sold in the fourth quarter of 2007 while MP3 capability was integrated in nearly 50 percent them. Using a Bluetooth-enabled hands-free solution with new features like audio streaming may no longer be a luxury but a necessity."

AskPatty.com has recently been provided several Motorola Bluetooth handsfree devices http://promo.motorola.com/bluetooth/index.html to try out, and we'll be sharing our opinions on them here very soon.

AskPatty.com joined General Motors and Clean Energy Fuels Corp. at a luncheon yesterday to discuss the first steps in creating a Hydrogen fueling infrastructure in the Los Angeles area. As part of this process, Clean Energy will soon open a hydrogen fueling station in Los Angeles with support from General Motors, and the two companies will continue to jointly explore opportunities to expand the hydrogen infrastructure, not just around Los Angeles, but across the United States.

As the first step in this effort, Clean Energy will add a hydrogen fueling station to its existing compressed natural gas (CNG) facility near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). It is expected to be operational by early fall. The hydrogen station will initially be used by drivers taking part in Chevrolet's Project Driveway, the world's largest market test of Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The station will also fuel the fleet of Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles being used to chauffeur Virgin Atlantic airlines' "Upper Class" customers to and from the airport. http://askpatty.typepad.com/ask_patty_/2008/03/virgin-driveway.html

In a real-world example of "Which came first: the chicken or the egg?" developing Hydrogen as an alternative fuel system requires concurrent investment in both the vehicular and fueling technologies. Several manufacturers have already developed (or are in the process of designing) hydrogen-powered vehicles for fleets and limited consumer use -- most notably Honda's FCX Clarity, BMW's 7-Series, Toyota's FCHV-adv, GM's Equinox, Ford Focus, and Mercedes A-Class F-cell -- but their mainstream use is hampered by the limited availability of hydrogen stations in urban areas.

The Clean Energy station, to be located at 104th and Aviation, will feature a 700-millibar quick-fill system and can store 350 Kilograms of Hydrogen. It is one of only three 700-bar stations available in the Los Angeles area (the other two are located in Irvine and Burbank). In addition to these high-capacity stations, several smaller 350-bar stations are being developed by Shell Oil in the next few months to help create a "mini network" of hydrogen filling stations that will hopefully help encourage additional production of fuel cell vehicles.

The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Equinox vehicles, when filled at a 700-bar station, can store 4 Kilograms of Hydrogen and can travel up to 200 miles on a full fill. Other Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are filled using 350-bar pressure systems to store about half that volume and offer about half that travel range.

What does "bar" measure? In the simplest terms, "bars" are a standard of measuring the amount of pressure required to push the gas into a tank, or the amount of pressure that fuel tank can hold when filled to capacity. Therefore, tanks capable of holding 700 bar can store twice the volume of hydrogen gas of a 350-bar tank. A vehicle with a 700-bar requirement can be filled using a 350-bar pressure system, but the system will only be able to fill the tanks to half their capacity, thus delivering only half the range. Vehicles with 350-bar tanks can only accept fuel through systems designed to deliver 350 bars of pressure.

GM and Clean Energy are discussing potential opportunities to expand this first station into a network of hydrogen fueling stations by leveraging Clean Energy's natural gas fueling expertise as well as the company's the real-world customer experience gained by fueling more than 14,000 vehicles daily at over 170 CNG stations across North America.

"Developing and growing hydrogen infrastructure is vital to GM's efforts to bring larger volumes of fuel cell vehicles to the market," said Mary Beth Stanek, director of energy and environmental policy & commercialization at General Motors. "We're supporting this hydrogen station near LAX because we recognize a critical role for Clean Energy's existing CNG infrastructure in helping expand the hydrogen infrastructure. We expect to learn important lessons from Clean Energy's expertise in developing and operating a network of natural gas fueling stations."

"Working with General Motors in this highly significant project makes great sense," said Andrew J. Littlefair, Clean Energy's president and CEO. "Developing a cost-effective hydrogen infrastructure is a challenge. By leveraging the growing network of natural gas stations, a variety of hydrogen station designs can be introduced to the public. Ultimately, reforming pipeline natural gas to produce hydrogen at our stations may be done inexpensively, thereby taking advantage of the ready infrastructure. This approach can help accelerate a larger-scale deployment of hydrogen vehicles."

With costs to build smaller 350-bar ministations estimated by Shell Oil and the Department of Energy to be about $1.75 million per station, experts predict that an introductory $250 million investment into creating the 100 stations over the next five years could provide the infrastructure required to meet the needs of emerging fleets.

When looking at the bigger picture, a national investment of between $10 billion to $15 billion could establish a refueling infrastructure in the nation's top 100 metro areas. That dollar figure assumes that 240 stations could be located about two miles apart in such major cities as Los Angeles and New York, with additional stations strategically located along the highly traveled destination corridors between major cities. Such an investment is said to be sufficient to power as many as a million Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles.

Clean Energy's 700-bar station near Los Angeles International Airport, and Shell Oil's 350-bar station in Santa Monica are steps on the way to integrating a Hydrogen infrastructure in the Los Angeles area. What's your opinion on the future of Hydrogen fuel in the United States? Do you agree that it's worth the investment to support this alternate fuel infrastructure? If they build it, will you come? http://askpatty.typepad.com/ask_patty_/2008/02/alternative-veh.html

Did you also know that from 1998 to 2007, approximately 365 children--most of them aged three and younger--died from heat stroke after being trapped in a car?

Both of these statistics are especially heartbreaking because, in most cases, a small amount of parental awareness and education can prevent these tragic injuries and deaths. In fact, when correctly used, child safety seats are extremely effective, reducing the risk of death by as much as 71 percent. It's as easy as correctly installing -- and ALWAYS buckling your child into -- the appropriate seat.

With summer around the corner, now is the time to educate families and children about safety in and around the car, so on Thursday, June 12, Safe Kids Buckle Up, Safe Kids USA, and longtime sponsors General Motors and Chevrolet are kicking off the summer with a safety program intended to educate families about this important, important concern.

The day's activity will also inspect child safety seats for hundreds of families in the Los Angeles area, and a landmark of the event will include the milestone one-millionth seat the organization has checked for proper installation. In addition to the car seat inspections, interactive displays will give families important information on preventing other dangers like leaving children in hot cars, back-over accidents, and trunk entrapment.

While it is sponsored by General Motors, please note that the Safe Kids Buckle Up program is open to owners of all makes of vehicles in an effort to protect children. The event runs from 10am to 2pm on Thursday June 12,2008, and will be held at Parking Lot #6 of the Los Angeles Sports Arena, 3939 S. Figueroa, Los Angeles, CA 90037. A Bilingual Spanish speaker will also be present at the event.

PARENTS TAKE NOTE: Even though you may not be able to attend this day's event in the Los Angeles area, it is part of an ongoing national program developed by Safe Kids USA and sponsored by General Motors and Chevrolet to educate parents and caregivers across the United States about the importance of properly restraining children on every ride. After this day's event, the program will have inspected one million car seats; held approximately 45,000 car seat checkup events around the country; donated approximately 365,000 car seats to families in need, and educated more than 15 million parents and caregivers since 1997.

Check out the Busted Knuckle Garage (http://www.bustedknucklegarage.com) for some unique gifts for "wrench-twisting car guys, bikers, and wannabe's." Best known for their line of herbal skin care products, close to 65% of their web customers are ladies buying for their father, hubby, boyfriend, son, or brother.

The company's founder, Warren Tracy, says he established the Busted Knuckle Garage "for no other reason than to help us all celebrate the fun we have tinkering, puttering, and playing around with our favorite car, truck, or motorcycle." His motto is "Repair and despair under one roof" because -- as anybody who works on their own car knows -- a busted knuckle or two just comes along with the territory. It's a growing company, and Warren promises their products are all about quality and fun.

The company's signature herbal skincare products lists a variety of items, including Mechanic's Hand Salve, Mechanic's Muscle Easing Salve, Mechanic's Skin Moisturizer, Mechanic's Hand Salve/Lip Balm, Mechanic's Hand Cleaner, and Mechanic's Sun Block "Lube in a Tube" - all affordably priced from just a couple bucks for littlest containers of lip balm/salve to $11 for a jug of skin moisturizer. The Muscle Easing Salve ($6.95) promises to work fast and effectively on muscle aches, joints, and tension, and claims to help heal sprains, bruising, and swelling. Rubbed on temples and back of neck for headaches, this salve claims to stimulate circulation and healing.

I'm not an herbal expert, but the ingredients list looks delicious: Organic Arnica Oil, Olive Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Organic Bee's Wax, Cocoa Butter, Vitamin E Oil, Camphor, Essential Oils of Wintergreen, Ginger, clove, and a variety of Mints and Cayenne. Mmmmmmm.

Their Mechanic's Hand Cleaner ($6.29 for 15 ounces, or three bottles for $15) features polyethylene scrubbers that are round and smooth unlike the jagged edges of pumice or sand found in other products. As a result, the cleansing process is much safer and gentler while still promising excellent results for scrubbing away the grease and grime that comes along with wrenching on those dirty engine parts.

In addition to the skin care stuff, the friendly website also offers a broad assortment of cool, retro-styled gifts and collectibles; tee shirts, hoodies and caps; personalized items like garage floor mats and signs; and a variety of car care items by Adams Polishes.

If your guy spends a lot of time wrenching on his car or motorcycle, or just bench racing with his buddies, their cool swivel stools offer a great place to "park it" while working hard, or hardly working.

They've even got an entire section of gifts under $10, including restoration and collectible books, mugs, magnets, and a fun "Busted Knuckle Garage" light switch plate. My favorite items? A cool magnetic finger sleeve that allows him to hold and retrieve any small metal object with fingertip control, it's perfect to help start little fasteners in tight-fitting or difficult-to-reach places.

Or how about their "Boil Over Hot Sauce"! With a blast of Serrano chili and lime, a wave of garlic, and a strong red Habanero afterburn, this spicy sauce sounds like it would extra yummy on just about anything from eggs to steak--or even a steak salad!

All their gear features their fun "Busted Knuckle Garage" logo, from their novelty wrenches to a brightly colored office racing chair right up to a gorgeously colorful neon sign.

Check them out, you never know what you might find! They'll be premiering a women's line very soon and also offer some children's clothing (cute little denim coveralls!) as well. They offer free shipping on orders over $100; Father's Day is June 15, so do your shopping soon!

The weekend included a stay at the St Regis in San Francisco, Yoga lessons, wine tasting, and a visit to Solage, a top-rated spa and a chaffered tour of Napa Valley through the picturesque countryside dotted with California wineries. (Celeste Atkinson, Entertainment and Lifestyle Manager with Audi and Jody DeVere, CEO/President of AskPatty.com pictured).

The weekend included private screening of the new movie "Iron Man" starring Robert Downey Jr (http://ironmanmovie.marvel.com/) who plays Tony Stark – the title character in the film, including our choice of flavored popcorns and cocktails. Iron Man's superpowers are the result of the highly versatile and indestructible high-tech armor that he developed himself. When he is without his suit, the technically-adept billionaire relies on the Audi R8. Iron Man also stars Oscar® winner Gwyneth Paltrow, Oscar® nominees Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges, and Shaun Toub. “Iron Man“is directed by Jon Favreau from a screenplay by Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby and Art Marcum & Matt Holloway. The film is produced by Avi Arad and Kevin Feige. The executive producers are Louis D’Esposito, Peter Billingsley, Jon Favreau, Ari Arad, Stan Lee and David Maisel.

Dining at the Supperclub (http://www.supperclub.com/) on a Saturday night was a one-of-a-kind experience like no other. When we first arrived were greeted by a drag queen diva in a dramatic dark hallway, and then escorted into the bar for farm-fresh martinis. Red leather walls and an excess of disco balls hung just right had the glitterati buzzing with anticipation for what was in store.

The doors flew open at eight o clock, and we were escorted to our beds to kick off our heels, lounge and just take in the view. The five-course meal was drawn out over four hours, and during that time, we became intimately involved with the folks in the show -- the drag queens, scantily clad aerial acrobats, and fishnet-flaunting servers were not there just for our viewing pleasure, but encouraged us to let loose, relax and experience a rather decadent (and in my opinion off-color) show. Great place for bachelorette parties, however not an Audi "female friendly" experience for me at all. I am no prude, but felt the women entertainers were presented as sexual objects and it made me feel very uncomfortable.

I did enjoy meeting the Audi female design team , Heather Shaw and Sabine Lapine, (pictured on left), based at the Audi Santa Monica Design Center. Their presentations and insight and on how Audi, based in Germany, gets ideas and input on American lifestyle and overall needs as Audi car buyers was a fascinating journey on how art, color and lifestyle influences the design of new Audi vehicles.

The most fun for me over the weekend was, you guessed it!, driving the sporty and superlative, progressive and emotive A4 which takes Audi into a new dimension in the midsize car segment. The two FSI direct injection gasoline engines provide supreme performance with fuel consumption that is more than 10 percent lower than the previous model. The highly efficient engines are clear evidence of Audi’s outstanding technical expertise. The dynamic suspension and many other technologies have been adopted directly from the large luxury class. The Audi A4 reaches the U.S. market in Fall 2008 and is an absolutely female friendly and wonderful driving experience.

Really want a chance to drive the Audi R8 at Infineon Raceway next, Audi's Performance Driving School is based there!

Here at AskPatty, we're well aware of the purchasing power we women hold in our purses. With women controlling over 85% of all consumer purchasing across every brand category, understanding why women buy is vital to a brand's success. We know that women spend more than five trillion dollars annually, that our input is integral to the purchase of 65% of all cars, 92% of vacations, and 61% of all electronics sold, and we know how passionate you can be about your cars and preferred brands. In fact, one study showed the average woman spends nearly 400 hours shopping each year, which adds up to nearly nine years of retail therapy over a lifetime.

We recently attended the 4th Annual M2W-The Marketing To Women Conference (http://m2w.biz/), where we spent two days learning more about how passionate women are about their favorite products. It was quite an eye-opening experience - here in AskPatty's automotive world, we're surrounded by men, and spend much of our time trying to convince them how we gals view cars (ad car buying) differently from the guys. At the M2W conference, we were surrounded by hundreds of women who already understood how they were different from men, in a wide variety of industries, from marketing, milk, and motorcycles, to social networking and nutrition, electronics and athletics.

As society continues to change and new consumer groups emerge, finding the passions of women is not always easy for today's brand marketers. The M2W conference brought together an amazing collection of savvy women who shared their knowledge and perspective on this subject in a fast-paced and extremely educational collection of seminars with topics focused on global marketing, marketing to women in male-dominated industries, multiculturalism, online publishing, change management, luxury and passion brands, and even green marketing!

Some of the extraordinary presenters included Stephanie Ouyoumjian, SVP, Director of Strategy, Publicis; Fara Warner, Author of "The Power of the Purse"; Marti Barletta, Founder, The TrendSight Group, Author, "Marketing To Women" and "PrimeTime Women"; and Lyn St. James, Indy 500 Driver, Founder, Women in the Winner's Circle Foundation.

Holly Jarrell, SVP, Director of Insight Creation for Manning Selvage & Lee, New York, presented information on learning how to how to leverage the new status symbols in women's daily and digital lives, saying the key to a brand's success lies both in the online and off-line worlds.

"The Millennial Woman may be a challenge for some brands," said Gigi Carroll, SVP, Group Creative Director for Draftfcb. "Her passions are not dictated by others, but set by her own expectations. She is not content with one label, but aspires to be many." Carroll presented an inside look at the exciting and often unconventional lives of today's twenty-somethings. If you haven't done so yet, it's time to start considering this powerful upcoming demographic.

Fara Warner's presentation explored the economic and social changes that are affecting women around the world, explaining how these changes that are rapidly transforming the roles of women globally. Did you know that young women in Africa can't attend school during their menstrual cycles because of the lack of proper sanitation products and facilities?

Former New York Congresswoman Susan Molinari was the first-day's lunch speaker, and she shared information about how the women's vote is transforming the way candidates campaign and how they can use these insights to do better business with women. "The political landscape has changed with women having a much greater role in shaping our culture," said Molinari. Her presentation also focused on the WE Vote '08 campaign, sharing how the WE television network has become instrumental in reaching women to register to vote, to educate women on issues of importance, and galvanizing them to get to the polls in November, 2008. Are you registered to vote, and will you?

We also saw an outstanding presentation on how Procter & Gamble changed its marketing game to win with black women by Najoh Tita-Reid, Associate Marketing Director, Multicultural Marketing, Procter & Gamble. Her segment on P&G's breakthrough "My Black is Beautiful" campaign and her presentation of black vs. white was eye-opening and emotionally moving.

Beyond the incredibly informative sessions, M2W attendees were also provided periodic opportunities to connect with our peers in power-networking sessions.
M2wlady13 We even rubbed elbows with a few men! It was a pleasure to meet Mark Grindeland (She's Connected); Doug Smith (SheHive); Tom Faley (Sargento Foods); Nicholas Eve (Ticket Network); Kent McBride (Make the Difference Network); and David Trocker (OPI Products).

This standing-room-only event is produced each year by PME Enterprises. The company will also be presenting a Marketing to Moms event in October. For information about attending their upcoming events, please visit www.m2w.biz for more details. When it was over, attendees left feeling enlightened and educated. It was really an amazing conference!

At the time of its release, Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper proclaimed, "The 2008 Malibu rewrites Chevrolet's midsize car strategy, offering a stylish, uncompromising package that stacks up against the most popular competitors." Peper proudly announced "We know the competition is very good, and this new Malibu has the goods - both tangible and intangible - to assert a leadership position in the segment and re-affirm Chevrolet's commitment to expressive cars."

Six months after its launch, it appears that Chevrolet has been quite successful in meeting these goals. And why not? The new 2008 Malibu features a refined and contemporary exterior; a spacious, upscale and quiet interior; and with a variety of trim levels and powertrains that can suit the needs of any buyer. Additionally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded the new Malibu five-star safety ratings all around, while the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety honored it with its highest safety rating as well.

With all these excellent features, it's easy to account for the new Malibu's success, especially when measured using these important landmarks:
In the month of September 2007, 100 dealers across the nation hadn't sold even ONE Malibu; those same dealers sold more than 40 during April 2008. That's an incredible feat to jump to more than one vehicle sold per day!
* Sales of the Malibu in California have increased 186%, and 51% of those buyers were conquests over other brands.
* Sales of the Malibu have increased 125% in other key markets
* The average transaction price has increased by $4000! That's up from $16,800 for the previous model to $20,800 to the current model, which means that Chevrolet is making more sales at higher prices, to a higher-level buyer. Way to go, Chevy!

And get this: According to Peper, "the new Malibus are selling faster than we can put them on dealers' lots." Chevrolet estimated it would need to ship approximately 85,000 units, but dealers have requested nearly 200,000 units. That's awesome!

According to Chevrolet Malibu marketing manager Mike Weidman, this was the most researched vehicle (from a consumer level) of any vehicle launch, ever made by General Motors. The advertising campaign was highlighted by enormous media pushes that saturated television and internet outlets on three dates, virtually ensuring that the Malibu was truly a car that nobody could miss. Additionally, specialized campaigns with Conde Nast targeted nine women's magazines through focused advertising, mall tours, sweepstakes, and "Malibutique" shopping experiences to help present the vehicle specifically to women. Awesome! Brand awareness has been so high that more than 10 million visitors have come to the http://www.chevrolet.com/malibu/ website, and traffic at http://www.chevrolet.com/ has increased by nearly 50%.

In case you somehow missed the media and advertising barrage, the Malibu is available with an entry-level price of just about $20,300 and a top-of-the-line price around $27,750; engine choices include a 2.4-liter four-cylinder, a 3.6-liter V-6 cylinder, and a hybrid-electric combination. Chevrolet has recently made the six-speed automatic available to both engines, making the Malibu the only four-cylinder/six-speed automatic combination in the segment. And Malibu is offered in several well-equipped trim levels: LS, LT and LTZ - all with standard head-curtain side air bags and front-seat thorax air bags, OnStar Gen 7 with remote diagnostics, and XM Satellite Radio - ensuring that buyers can choose a vehicle that best suits their needs. According to Peper. "There is more style and content on the new Malibu than any other competitor in the segment."

It looks like the new Malibu has met its challenge, and has become the success story that Chevolet was hoping to achieve. Congratulations, Chevy!

In a three-year $1.4-million sponsorship with MillionTreesNYC, Toyota will support tree planting, public education and community outreach activities aimed at getting every New Yorker involved in tree planting and stewardship activities. Toyota joined with The Home Depot Foundation as a lead sponsor of the initiative and BNP Paribas as presenting sponsors of MillionTreesNYC Month.

"Toyota has responded loud and clear to the MillionTreesNYC call to action," said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe. "Their generous sponsorship to help plant and care for one million new trees in New York City over the next decade will contribute to the tangible 'greening' of our urban landscape in historic proportions. Toyota's generous financial contribution also sets a strong example of how businesses and corporations can help make New York City a healthier place for all to live."

Through a mix of public and private plantings, MillionTreesNYC - part of of Mayor Bloomberg's PlaNYC - claims it will expand New York City's urban forest by 20%. The trees will provide New York residents such positive benefits as more beautiful neighborhoods and parks; cleaner air and water; higher property values; energy savings; cooler summer streets, yards, and public open spaces; and help create a healthier, more environmentally sustainable city. MillionTreesNYC partners and citizen volunteers will plant the trees in places such as schoolyards and playgrounds, public housing campuses, business districts, commercial and residential developments, front yards, and other private lands.

"With the support and leadership of corporations like Toyota who are putting environmental initiatives at the forefront, we can truly change the landscape of this City and our planet," said Drew Becher, Executive Director of New York Restoration Project. "MillionTreesNYC is honored to have Toyota's ongoing support for our campaign."

Toyota has been a long-time supporter of environmental and tree-planting initiatives across the country. MillionTreesNYC is just one piece of Toyota's ongoing mission to support sustainable initiatives, particularly in communities where the company operates. "We are so proud to be a part of Million Trees NYC, because we know that trees are one of the most sustainable solutions for our environment," said Dian Ogilvie, senior vice president of Toyota Motor North America. "This initiative will bring lasting results that will help our environment for years and years to come."

During last month's MillionTreesNYC Month (April 2008), MillionTreesNYC launched a campaign encouraging New Yorkers to "think globally and plant locally" enlisting community, corporate, and youth volunteers from all five boroughs to roll up their sleeves and plant trees. Throughout the month, Parks, NYRP, and MillionTreesNYC partners hosted free citywide events for the public including tree education seminars, tree stewardship workshops, tree pruning instructional courses, Urban Park Ranger tree identification hikes, and large scale volunteer tree plantings.

According to Shell oil, two violent crimes are committed in the U.S.
every minute of every day. Women driving alone can be particularly
vulnerable, though there are many things you can do to keep yourself
safer, both inside your car and out.

We found an informative brochure from Shell Oil with many helpful tips to
guide women towards safer behaviors when alone behind the wheel.
Written in conjunction with the National Safety Council (www.nsc.org)
and the National Crime Prevention Council (www.weprevent.org), many of
the free booklet's tips are simply common-sense reminders to help you
be more aware of potentially dangerous situations.

First off: An especially good habit is always to be sure you have your keys in your hand before you approach your car.

Several pages are dedicated to parking lot safety, with familiar reminders to
park in a well-lighted area, near the exit, and away from shrubs that
could hide a would-be attacker. But the booklet also suggests such
tactics as backing into the parking spot to reduce the chance that
somebody could trap you, and flipping your passenger seat forward
before leaving the vehicle to aid our visibility into the car when you
return. Also, if you've got a group of people returning to their cars
in a lot, another tip suggests that everybody should go to one car
first, then that driver can drop off each person one at a time,
remaining nearby until each vehicle starts safely.

Concerned about car-jackings? Well, keeping your door locked is a no-brainer.
But, if you feel you could be driving into a potentially dangerous
situation at an intersection, the booklet suggests anticipating your
approach so that you can time the light to avoid stopping. Try to be
alert of potential escape routes: leave enough room behind the car in
front of you that you can see its tires touching the pavement, so you
can pull out quickly without having to back up. And stay in the
left-hand lane when approaching an intersection; this will give you
time to see anybody approaching from the curb, and reduce your chance
of being boxed in.

If you are concerned that you're being followed, don't drive home: You'll
just be bringing a potential attacker to your home and loved ones.
Instead, drive to a well-lit public place like a grocery store, gas
station, or police station. Once there, draw attention to yourself,
even honk your horn if you have to.

These are just highlights - click to download your own complete copy of Shell's "Alone Behind the Wheel,"
for more safety tips on what to do and what not to do when driving by
yourself. It's a handy little booklet that you can keep in your
glovebox or pass along to a friend when you're done reading it. Might
even be a good idea to browse the other downloadable booklets at the site, and collect a set to provide to any young drivers in your household.
