Today's photo bloggers are showing us more than just a pretty picture. They're giving us a glimpse into their lives, what they do when they're not snapping away. From little bits and pieces of their descriptions, we learn a bit about what makes them tick and click. Photo bloggers interact with one another on the blogosphere by more than just commenting on their blogs. They participate in weekly photo challenges, submit to Flickr groups and encourage one another to do better

[Editor's note: Another great photography tip from the BlogHer archives (our vault is vast and deep) that I'm pulling out for the Month of Photo Tips: Find photo bloggers to inspire you. Jenna has done just that with this list. Warning: Don't click these links until you have time to gaze, and gaze, and gaze ... - Julie]

Female PhotographerIf a photo is worth a thousand words, a photo blog speaks infinitely about who's behind the camera. As a photographer myself, I scour the net for new, different and inspiring photo blogs on a regular basis. I do so for ideas to incorporate in my own photography. I do so to learn more about the craft. But mostly I do so because photo blogs are amazing in so many ways.

They participate in weekly photo challenges, submit to Flickr groups and encourage one another to do better.

There are many different kinds of photo blogs. From the very beginner to the very professional, you can find a wide range of great photographers blogging their hearts out. Some of the most inspiring blogs are by those who make a career in photography but still find the time to share a little bit of photo-love with us. Sometimes professionals use their blogs solely as a way to showcase their best work. Sometimes they use it as an aside to show us what else they do. Here are some of my favorite professional photographers who hit the spot when it comes to blogging.

  • Light Traces by Michelle Black - Photos, inspiration, tips, tricks and general awesomeness.
  • Lisa Leonard - Her lovely personality shines through her photos and words.
  • Tracey Clark - an amazing photographer who shares her knowledge via classes.
  • Work of Heart Photo by Skye Hardwick - Amazing child photography. Amazing.
  • Jessica Claire - From fabulous weddings to fluffy dogs, this is one amazing photographer.

Photo blogs can have different themes. I particularly like looking at sites that are participating in some variation of Project 365, a picture a day for an entire year. Similarly, there are other blogs that follow the 52 weeks theme, a photo (or series of photos) once a week for an entire year. These photo blogs are not perfect in nature but rather give a glimpse at what goes into the process of taking a photo every single day. They serve as a reminder and inspiration to get out and keep being creative. Here are some great examples of these themes in action.

  • 36 Balloons by Heather Kennedy - a 52 week blog that brings light, life and happiness.
  • A Tumblog About Photography by Ari Scott - Fantastic, creative, unique and expressive.
  • The Yellow House by Cierra - food, cute babies and amazing tones; what more do you need?
  • As I See It by Teri Argo - horses, dogs and two years of 365!
  • 365 by Alecia - Who knew mops could look so good?

I love collaborative blogs, whether they are all about words, photos or a mish-mosh of the two. Collaborative photo blogs bring something special to the table, pulling talent from more than one place and exposing readers to even more awe-inspiring beauty.

I just posted on my humor blog today and have some photos I am proud of. I did start out with a humor blog and no pictures, then stock pic or other found pic, then I decided to try to mostly use my own pics. We'll see how it pans out! I used to have the desire to be a photographer, even took a class and used to develop pictures in my parents basement when I was a teen. Check out my fog photos at http://www.everydayunderwear.com/2012/03/fog-could-have-killed-me.html

Great post. Thank you for including some of my favorites!

I've been a photographer/blogger for many years, but just recently rebranded the blog and decided to take it in a new direction (less about session showcases for clients, more about portrait education for photographers).

I've been a blogger since April 2, and I use my own photographs for each post I make. I mainly blog about my passion for gardening, with emphasis on the flowers and perennials I grow. I have a post that features the photographs I took at this year's Maryland State Fair, the lighthouses I've visited in Maine, and the flowers I remember from my childhood.

I just returned from a week on the coast of Maine and I have 'fog' photographs to share. I'll be posting those in a day or two. . I hope you have time to check me out.

I also love photography and blogging, but did'nt know about photoblogging as such. After stumbling on this article, I am really excited about starting my own photoblog. Thanks for sharing, I feel that this is just what the doctor ordered.

I started my blog about a year ago and recently rediscovered my love of photography. I would count myself as a beginner and loving it. Of course, my beloved camera is being repaired right now. I have been fighting with my hubby's point and shoot for about a month now. Yikes, sometimes the p + s wins and sometimes I do. Anyway, my blog address is www.peachcoglo.typepad.com. Love this post; I found a lot of new-to-me photographing ladies!

My favorite photo blogger is Tara Whitney. http://tarawhitney.com/justbeblogged/ She is awesome. I love photographers who share their lives as well as their work so you really get to know the artist behind the photos.

I love photo blogs, or even blogs with great photos. I recently just updated my blog http://www.horsesandheels.com so I could showcase photos better & made them all larger. The bigger the better right?

I found this article, because there was a direct hit from it to my blog! I don't see where or why, but great read! I know some of the professional photographers mentioned, and I'm familiar with some of the blogs too!

I am a 13 year professional portrait photographer in Massachusetts ( http://www.lauraleerichardphotography.com ), with a huge photo-post blog on a mish-mash of interests ( http://www.ourhouseofjoyfulnoise.com ) . While I love my people portrait work, I really love taking photos of all kinds of things. So our blog really gives me that opportunity to use my photography in so many ways, documenting and sharing all of the creative projects and pass-times we have. There is always a camera in my hand, whether I'm with a client, or taking photos for blogging fun.

My little blog was chosen as a BlogHer Voice of the Year, Visual Category, and the past few weeks have seen my hits soar. Thanks, BlogHer! I usually include multiple photos on my daily posts... and I've been doing this since 2008. What's different about my blog? I live in Wyoming on a ranch that's been in the same family for 100 years. I share our daily life, my latest projects, and Wyoming scenery. Stop by and say hello! http://reddirtinmysoul.com

Hello!,

I am a blog junkie! Not only do I create two blogs, but I love reading blogs! My husband and I have had the unique experience to travel around the world the last four years and I have blogged about our adventures. Trips this year have been to Thailand, Cambodia, Turkey, Romania, France.... I was so into this blog that I started a second one a year ago to share more of my art and everyday living in Brussels Belgium. I hope you stop by for a visit - Cheers.

I'm new to blogging and to photography, but I am loving them both. I get so much inspiration from other blogs, and have enjoyed making new blogger friends. I work so many hours at my regular day job, I don't have as much time as I'd like for photography or blogging, but it is such a great way to relax when I do make time to do it!

Thanks to all you wonderful ladies who share yourselves through your blog!

I find that my photo blog (http://rainbeauseitz.com/thoughts) is a great way to keep my friends and family updated on what I've been up to. My family is spread out all over the country and this way, it's like they were there with me on shoots, on trips, or an afternoon out.

I love photography and learning, and I have sooooo far to go. I'm finding that the photography part of working on my blog is starting to bog me down (trying to find angles of the same old stuff is a little trying).

BUT! Jan over at www.twoscoopz.com ( http://www.twoscoopz.com ) keeps me going a lot. Her photography is so fresh and heart-warming, I can't help but be inspired after browsing.

Yay photobloggers!

I was actually stunned at how many FANTASTIC photographers were using flickr as their only medium of sharing their photography. One of the biggest mistakes bloggers make ( http://www.blogher.com/5-more-blogging-mistakes-beginners-make ) is not owning your own domain. I had to pass up some great photographers who weren't actually blogging! Such a shame. (That said, I was an early adopter of flickr, have a pro account and love the snot out of it as a social networking tool for photographers as well as an easy way to share photographs in a private way with friends and family!)

Best of luck as you make your move to blogging!

I could not cope without Flickr as a blogging tool. I have a Pro account - SO worth it! Some of the things Flickr does for me:

1) Flickr hosts all of the photos that appear on my blog
2) Flickr generates code for different sizes - I pick the size photo I need, Flickr does the coding work
3) Flickr is how I mobile photo blog. I email a photo from my phone to a certain Flickr email address, and it forwards it to the blog with subject and text.
4) Flickr can tweet my photos, too. Same method as mobile blogging, just a different address
5) I can search for Creative Commons photos to use for illustrating a post, if I don't have the right photos in my own arsenal

I'm sure there are others with more blogging uses for Flickr - these are just the ways in which I use it to support my blogging efforts

After perusing through several blogs, I decided I wanted to start my own. Instead of only posting my images on flickr, I could share the story or inspiration behind them. Or how I failed miserably... that happens too.
Thank you for sharing your favorites - I hope to find a new blog to put in my reader!

There's a few photo bloggers I follow that rock my socks off! One of which is http://www.sarahrhoads.com/blog. She's an amazing photographer and I especially love the layout of her site!

Also, I follow Drew B from Cali. She has two sites I follow. One that is strictly for her photography, http://blog.drewbphotography.com/ and then one for her photography/mommyhood at http://www.momtog.com/. I find both of them entertaining and helpful!

I am also a photographer/blogger. My blog is a mixture of my photography work and my family life. I always include at least one pic for each post. I'm helplessly addicted to blogging. I'm quite a talker in my everyday life and it just spills out into my blog. I can't help myself. http://barnettes.com/

I started my blog ( http://www.darrahparker.com/blog ) about a year ago around the same time that I bought a fancy camera. The original goal of the blog was to document my life as a creative person with a day job and to share my art. I had no idea how much photography would become a part of the blog.

Within six months, I quit my day job to start a photography business ( http://www.darrahparker.com ). Even though my focus shifted a little, my blog remains a place to ponder life, share what is inspiring me, and post some of my favorite photos.

Something that grew out of the early stages of my blog is what I call Slice of Life Tuesday ( http://www.darrahparker.com/blog/category/slice-of-life-tuesday ). Every Tuesday, I post a photo and a weekly challenge on my blog and on Flickr, encouraging people to find the beauty in their everyday lives. It's been a great way to make time for creativity in my busy life and has connected me to some amazing and inspiring people.

I am constantly inspired by the photoblogs I visit. A few of my faves are on your list. I can't wait to check out the others!

Blogging has been the entry point into the world of photography for me. At first I challenged myself to take a photo for every post I wrote, and now I wouldn't really have it any other way. We've since upgraded our equipment, and my {non-blogging} hubby has become quite the photography enthusiast.

As much as I love good writing (and I LOVE good writing) photos are always what will grab my attention first and keep me coming back for more.

I'm excited to check some of these blogs out.

I did the 365 Project last year and photoblogged it ( http://365genie2009.wordpress.com/ ) -- it was really fun, and I'm doing it again with ShakeIt Photo for the iPhone, although just keeping it on Flickr rather than blogging it as well.

But I also started 5x52 ( http://5x52.wordpress.com/ ) this year, which is a weekly post of five frames that tell a story (sometimes real, sometimes imagined) with no words. It's been an interesting challenge -- some weeks have definitely been more effective than others, but I'm learning a ton from it!

Hi Jenna,

I have been photo blogging within the context of my blog, not separately, since its inception in 2003. In 2004, I started mobile blogging the photos from my camera phone to my blog. I really love it.

If you are the sort that finds yourself not posting photos because they get lost in the transition between camera & computer, then take camera phone photos & post them directly to your blog from your mobile phone.

I do some mobile photo blogging on one of my blogs. I'm not really any kind of photographer - I just like to share what I'm experiencing while I'm out and about, especially while I'm on vacation or doing some leisure activity that's specific to Florida.

There is tremendous opportunity to get a glimpse into other cultures and other parts of the world when you visit photo blogs. We can learn so much from one another this way!
