Blogging and Weight Loss

Recently, I joined another social network, NaBloPoMo, which stands for National Blog Posting Month. The focus is for its participating members to write a blog post each day for the month of November. Although I missed the November 1 st start date, I’m going to put my own start date as of the date of my joining the group, November 21 st. I’ve already posted a blog entry for November 22 nd and 23 rd.

Since its start in the late 90’s, blogging has become, for some, a daily necessity. Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online journals. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other web pages related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art, photographs, sketches, videos, music, audio (pod casting) and are part of a wider network of social media.

If you’re trying to lose weight, writing a blog, can be not only easy but indeed, invaluable. It can be only a food blog—e.g., like what you ate today, or a complete personal blog, outlining your weight loss journey. In any case, keeping a journal, and in this case, an online blog, has been proven to be an effective method of helping people weight loss or, more importantly, keep the weight off, because:

  1. It allows for personal reflection on your experiences, both successes and failures.
  2. It allows for accountability.
  3. It allows for sharing. What experience you’ve gained, you can pass on to others.
  4. It allows for feedback. With a community behind you, weight loss can be much easier.
  5. It allows you to meet new people, develop new relationships, and “spread your wings.”

Other great benefits associated with blogging are the comments generated by a blog post. You have your take on what you just wrote, but someone else might see the issue completely differently, or might have a unique way of approaching an issue; or even better, other people more often than not, will give you a pat on the back for a job well done.

Without a blog, comments wouldn’t be possible, and without comments, a blog is just, well a journey of one. And you know the adage: “No man can be an Island,” or something like that……………………………………….)

In the short time since I started Iowa Avenue, I’ve met some fantastic people, the majority of which are online. Within the Internet, connections can come from so many different kinds of people, people most of us are unlikely to meet in our day to day, “real” lives. Now, I can’t imagine my life without it. I never thought I’d be a writer, but I have things to say, and my blog gives me a place to do that.

Now, what can you do to help make your own “road” to weight loss easier, more educational, more supportive, and more fun? Start a blog on Iowa Avenue. Share you’re weight loss journey; how you’re doing it, why you’re doing it, met other people doing it, and maybe most importantly, get help doing it.
