BlogHer Conferences in Pictures: BlogHer '10, Not in NYC But With You in Spirit (UPDATED PICTURES!)

I'm the one who squees and hugs in the hotel lobby when I recognize you when you walk in. That's me. I"m frantic and frazzled trying to make sure stuff is taken care of so you have a great time, but it really comes down to that moment when we finally touch.

I can't do that this year. This evil illness that has taken many of my organs and is scheduled to take more won't allow the travel or the marathon of information and hug-fest that is BlogHer '10.

I'm not going to lie -- I cried.

I cried hard.

I'm still fighting tears.

The moment I realized it wasn't smart or safe for me to attend BlogHer '10 in New York City, I broke down like a kid who didn't get her most sought-after toy for Christmas.

This isn't easy. This is MY THING. We talk all year long and NOW is when I get to meet you. I get to hug you. We get to laugh about that one thing you blogged about and argue about that one thing I tweeted.

I work my butt off so that you'll come to this conference, and it's all a very selfish job. I mean sure, professionally this is my work. But don't misunderstand ... this work is my very selfish passion. It takes me to the White House, the cattle ranches, and most importantly it gets me up-close-and-personal with you. BlogHer '10, as in previous years, is my big pay-off for a year's worth of hard work. I'm not sure exactly how to explain what I do here at BlogHer, just know that a lot of ME is wrapped up in YOU. I love you guys. I am lucky to get a paycheck that comes straight from work I love. You've all propped me up in my darkest hours through this illness and laughed with me between surgeries.

This sucks the life out of me more than I can explain. In fact, I lobbied hard to join you. I tried to convince my co-workers and my husband that even if my body was going to be wrecked by the conference, my mind and soul needed your support. I need my community now more than ever, and it is killing me to NOT get on that plane to New York.

My comfort, right now, is knowing I'm not alone. In this community, I am never alone.

We all have our reasons. Some of us couldn't afford it. Some of us couldn't find babysitters or house-sitters or dog-sitters. Some of us just weren't ready to meet face-to-face. Some of us have weddings to attend, kids to get to school, family in town, or medical dramas.

Whatever our reasons, we are home -- far away from New York City and the few days of hugging bloggers and friends face-to-face that sometimes carry us through the year.

It's hard. It's hard to hear about everyone packing and plotting which shoes to wear. It will be harder when the tweets and blog posts start to roll in from New York. The discussions during panels, the keynotes, the parties. This is going to get worse for us before it gets better.

So I propose we link arms, so to speak. Do our best to support the women in New York and those unable to attend. Send each other over to watch feeds as they start to pour out of the Big Apple and spend time here and elsewhere online hugging each other virtually.

Join me in uploading a photo to our Flickr pool -- maybe it's just you on your couch. Maybe you're at a wedding while BlogHer '10 rages on, or maybe you're just being silly in your garden as you watch from home. Hold up a sign. Make a silly face ... send your spirit to New York and beyond as we make our own memories in conjunction with those at BlogHer '10.

It was my first BlogHer conference so you and I have not met before, but I did get to take a picture with your head on a stick!! So I feel kind of like we did in a way.

Going to look at the photo stream now of all the folks at home. I love pictures. <3

Maybe it's an Erin thing.

I was so excited to go and then I wound up in the hospital 3 times in 3 weeks. And, well, that pretty much put an end to the BlogHer fund. :( I'm feeling better now (and likely even have a diagnosis! woo!) and have big plans for 2011.

Feel better soon, Erin!

Even though I'm not the most active on BlogHer, I read blog posts and I'm in awe of the women who are part of this community. Not only were you the person who turned me on to BlogHer, and who epitomizes what the community is all about and we all strive for in our lives, but you remain one of my favorite people in this crazy world -- where people can be your favorite despite the fact that you've only seen them a few times (or never!) and that you live miles away.

I am going to miss you so very much. I was anticipating seeing you in NYC, but I am anticipating you being healthy and getting back to kicking ass 100 percent of the time (as opposed to only 99.9 percent ... geez, woman...) so much more.

Always thinking of you!!

Community. It has been about community. We expand and contract. BlogHers adjust to new folks and want to see our long term friends.

I love that you have created a back-up community.

I'm trying to pack but it has never been about the clothes or the gadgets. It is about the people that resonate across all kind of backgrounds.

You will be there in spirit and in the Tweet stream so I know you will be busy.

I don't know why I remember this. But last year during BlogHer I was sitting at home reading the Twitter stream about all that was going on in Chicago, when you tweeted out that you were eating pizza some place and anyone could come join you. I thought it was awesome and generous. And I wanted to be able to do that this year with you and others in NYC, my first BlogHer! You were one of the people on my list I wanted to find the courage to introduce myself too. I'm totally bummed that it won't happen this year. You'll be missed! A lot.

So get better... and stay that way (damn it!) so we can go grab a bite to eat next year.

I confess, you were one of the bloggers I was most looking forward to meeting at this, my first BlogHer. I totally understand, from following your tweets, the urgency of attending to your health, and I'm happy that @aaronvest got his way on that one.

And as someone who's sat on the sidelines of every other BlogHer, wishing they were closer to home, I'm very excited about this project for all the folks who won't be there.

Sister,
I know. I feel you. I am not going either. My federal probation ends October 2010! 3 years has come and gone. I did go to BlogHer San Francisco and it was AMAZING! I got permission from the FEDS and man-oh-man I didn't want to do that for NYC.

I will be at BlogHer 11 as a FREED woman. So, work on your health. Let your spirit freely soar at BlogHer 10 and I look forward to bellying up to the bar with you next year! And I will upload a photo...way cool idea!

Be loving & Be in LOVE

I entered the blogging world far too late to get in on this year's BlogHer, but I'm tragically sad to miss it, nonetheless.

When I first read the title, I thought, "Yay! People with me!"

But your story ... so heartbreaking. So now I'm thinking, "I'm here with her." And I am. Just one more person sending you love.

Lots and lots of it.

I admit it, I'm selfishly bummed. I was really looking forward to being on that panel with you and finally getting to know you better in person. I was super bummed to hear this news.

But yeah, your physical health is obviously the priority right now and you have got to take care of yourself because you are so very, very cherished by everyone around you.

Take good care, lady.

Erin:

You know how bummed I am. In a very real way, you are BlogHer for me - and I would never have gone to my first one if it hadn't been for you.

BUT.

You were exhausted, drained, and walking-wounded last year... and I know damn well you wouldn't pace yourself if you came. You give too much sometimes - okay, too much of the time.

I read what Maria wrote and thought "damn straight" - you need to make sure there's a you to BE there next year. So I'm firmly on the stay home QoS team as well.

Will you be missed? Totally. Will others who have decided not to come for various reasons (health, finances, no vacation, no childcare, not ready yet...) be missed? Absolutely.
But as always? We couldn't be BlogHer without the thousands and thousands of folks who are out here every day living it... so you're with us.
