Everyone Says to Create an Elevator Pitch, but How Do You Do That?

Every single list of advice you'll read about attending #BlogHer16 will include some variation on this line: Have an elevator pitch. Perfect your elevator pitch. Practice your elevator pitch. Own your elevator pitch. Be your elevator pitch. Which is all fine and dandy, except no one seems to be telling people how to create an elevator pitch. Womp womp. We discussed some ideas on the BlogHer Editorial Team. First and foremost, we'll define an elevator pitch for you: ...more

Don't Tell Me They're Not Real: Internet Friends Are Real Life Friends

Don't tell me they're not real. I left a comment on the most random blog post I had ever come across in my many times clicking the "Random" button on LiveJournal. The blogger replied. I replied. Then the blogger's friend replied. I looked at his avatar, this friend of the original blogger, and my eyebrow raised a little bit. The back and forth conversation went on all evening, one comment after the other. Days later, AOL Instant Messenger names were exchanged. Three years later, we stood in front of our friends and family and exchanged vows. ...more

Featuring Our Voices and Photos of the Year Videos: Grab Some Tissues and Watch Them Now

The Voices and Photos of the Year Community Keynote is always a highlight of the BlogHer conference. This year was no different, as 12 readers took to the stage to share their written words with their voices. Sometimes they trembled due to the weight and emotion of the piece, but these strong, well-written, and well-spoken women stood at that podium and spoke their truth. Additionally, we honored all of our winners for our first ever Photos of the Year with three amazing photographers present on stage. ...more

Comedian Tig Notaro Takes the Stage at BlogHer '14

Tig Notaro took the stage with BlogHer Co-Founder Elisa Camahort Page to talk life, personal setbacks, and what happens when you go viral—when you don't really know what going viral means. That's right. This not-on-Twitter comedian didn't realize people were tweeting and blogging a set of hers at Largo in Los Angeles, and woke up to an overflowing inbox, book deals, and you name it. She was baffled. ...more

7 Leaders Talk Race, Gender, Feminism, and the Internet at the BlogHer '14 Closing Keynote

In 2013, with the killing of Trayvon Martin and the subsequent trial of George Zimmerman, talk about race, privilege, and what to do about it exploded on the Internet. In addition to the important discussions about race, gender and feminism came to the forefront in the past year on social media, most notably in the appropriately viral hashtag #yesallwomen....more

6 Important Voices in 3 Great Interviews on the Future of the Social Web

Saturday morning's keynote hit on topics surrounding the future of the social web. We're all pretty interested in that since, you know, we are the social web. The keynote broke into three parts, featuring three smart interviewers asking three smart women all the smart questions. What resulted from these segmented interviews was a rounded look at what exists now on our Internet, how we got here, and where we might be going. First up... ...more

The 10x10 Presentations at BlogHer '14: 13 Videos You Don't Want to Miss

The 10x10 presentations made by long-standing community members rank as one of the highlights of BlogHer '14 in San Jose. These intelligent, witty, entrepreneurial, big-hearted, thick-skinned, been-there-lived-through-it-have-the-blog-to-show-for-it people took to the stage and shared the truth of their journey over the past ten years. We, the attendees, learned a lot and came away inspired by what our written word on the web can do. Make sure to watch each video as each speaker brings something important to the stage, to the table, to your listening ear....more
