Remember Waiting to Exhale? Join Us for Getting to Happy
When I sat down to read Terry McMillan's Getting to Happy, the long-awaited sequel to her groundbreaking novel Waiting to Exhale, I had a lot of questions. It had been twenty years in my life since we first met these four women, how long had it been in theirs? Did Bernie open her bakery? What about Robin's baby? How is Gloria doing after her heart attack? And Getting to Happy -- does that mean that they weren't? Clearly I was ready for the sequel.
Truth be told, the movie for Waiting to Exhale was my introduction to these characters. I was really too young to read the novel when it first came out. I was a more appropriate age when the movie was released, and it was one of those movies my friends and I had a copy of and would pull out during college break-ups and imagine burning our ex's stuff in a car a la Bernie. Angela Bassett was our bad break-up hero.
As I cracked open Getting to Happy and turned to the first page, I hoped that I'd find the same feisty four women that I had gotten to know in Waiting to Exhale. They were ... and weren't. They'd grown a lot in the 15 years (in their world) since we last saw them. They were a bit older. They were a bit wiser. Their children had grown up. Some got married, some got divorced. But were they any happier than when we first met them?
Join us for the next month as our community shares reviews, thoughts and meditates on what Getting to Happy really means.
