In March 2011, the BlogHer community was invited to select favorite reality television programs on the BlogHer.com weekly research poll. There were 9 choices for television programs, plus a 10th option stating “None: reality television is a symptom of the downfall of society”.

While a higher percentage (17%) chose “None” as an individual response, most people that took the poll did have a favorite, as indicated by the chart below.
On the BlogHer poll, Fox Broadcasting singing competition American Idol led by half a percentage point, mirroring its success in the National TV ratings. Per Nielsen Media Research, American Idol recently delivered a 13.6 rating, with a 21 share, which translates into about 24 million people and makes it the #1 rated series in the U.S. That’s substantially more than the approximately 3 million viewers Project Runway gets on Lifetime TV, and yet the fashion competition show nearly tied AI among the BlogHer community members.

Food is by far the biggest blog category on the BlogHer network (with over 10 million unique visitors per month, per Nielsen Site Census-March 2011). So it’s not surprising that Top Chef also ranked high in the BlogHer.com opinion poll.
The Celebrity Apprentice (NBC) has been getting a lot of press this season, mostly from an extremely eclectic cast that includes Academy Award nominated actor Gary Busey as well as iconic pop singer Dionne Warwick. They’ve gotten a boost in their national TV ratings, but the BlogHer community ranking is low. Past surveys have shown that many in the BlogHer audience are entrepreneurs and self-employed, so maybe they’re not buying celebrity shenanigans when it comes to starting a business!
The Bachelor, which just wrapped a season on ABC, barely registered on the BlogHer poll, with only 1% of the respondents selecting it as their favorite.
BlogHer Research started running a weekly opinion poll six weeks ago and a new poll topic is uploaded every Monday morning. Past topics have included picking the winning movie for the Academy Awards, asking people what’s on their “Bucket List” and wondering how the community feels about the end of the Space Shuttle program. The reality television poll received the most responses of any topic so far.
