BlogHer Conferences 2010: A Year in Review

BlogHer Original Post

With the year coming to an end and so many fun and exciting things going on with the BlogHer Conferences team, we thought it might be fun to take a look back at 2010 -- the year in BlogHer events.

We thought January would be a month of reflection of what we had seen and done in 2009, but there was no rest for this team –- we were full steam ahead, starting the year with the announcement of our Second Annual BlogHer Food conference in San Francisco. We were still riding high from the 2009 conference just that past September, so we decided to do it again! This time we were changing venues and heading to the InterContinental San Francisco -– wahoo!

We charged ahead with planning the annual conference in New York –- it was the first time we took the annual conference to the Big Apple, so we knew it was going to be a big one. We were right.

We added many new features and activities at BlogHer ’10, including:

*A half-day pre-conference workshop co-produced with The White House Project -- a nonpartisan organization designed to assist women enter into politics be it local or national level

* A new approach to afterhours activities at BlogHer events that introduced “community parties” to the BlogHer experience

* An expanded Community Keynote as part of the Voices of the Year initiative, including an art auction and gala co-produced with Kirtsy to benefit the The Nature Conservancy. In the end we raised $5,400 for the charity’s Gulf Coast Restoration project!

* A move for the International Activists Scholarship Program to our keynote stage. What a privilege it was to have these powerful women grace our keynote stage.

The BlogHer ‘10 annual conference was record-setting –- over 100 sponsors, 2400 attendees, 139 speakers, two expo halls, 48 sessions, eight official BlogHer parties and one pity party! We captured all keynote sessions and Voices of the Year on video and live blog and all sessions were captured on audio. We then wrapped it all up in a pretty bow and rounded up the event here. And for the icing on the cake we announced BlogHer ’11 would be in San Diego!

But the year was far from over...

During all of this planning and hoopla for the annual event, we were still busy getting ready for the 2nd Annual BlogHer Food event. Wanting to take it up a notch, this year’s food event was two days and featured two official BlogHer parties! On Friday night, we partnered with Food Fete to feature over 20 different local, artisanal vendors. And on Saturday we wrapped up the event with a soiree at the California Culinary Academy for a party, hosted by Ree Drummond, Jaden Hair and Elise Bauer

BlogHer Food ’10 enjoyed over 300 attendees, more than 30 sponsors, 65 speakers, and 25 sessions. And like our other events we were live blogging, but we also did something new – we live streamed the event.

We’re already hard at work on 2011:

We announced BlogHer ’11 back in August, and since then we’ve also announced two other events taking place in 2011.

One is a brand-new event: BlogHer|bet ’11! What is BlogHer|bet? Elisa, Jory and Lisa described their inspiration for this new event in Lisa’s post, but here’s the brief on the event:

If you're a woman who has a big idea that involves technology, the Internet or social media, we have an opportunity for you. With the leadership of 50 pioneering entrepreneurs, technologists and business leaders, BlogHer is hosting a special event for women who want to start something. Whether you're considering a start-up of your own, or innovating from inside a company, we invite you to join BlogHer's 2011 Business, Entrepreurism and Technology conference on March 24-25 in Silicon Valley.

And then, just squeaking by before the New Year, we announced BlogHer Food ’11 in Atlanta! That’s right –- we’re taking this show on the road. After two years in the San Francisco Bay Area we’re pulling up stakes and moving to the South –- ready or not, here we come!

Now we can take a deep breath and roll into the New Year, right? Nope! We had one final thing on the agenda –- changing up the BlogHer Conferences website. Our little site needed a face lift and that is what happened. We hope you roam around the site and enjoy the enhanced look and feel. More additions are on the way but take a peek – we’re not shy!

After the growth of BlogHer ’10, the events team also grew. Miriam, Erin, Jes and I were joined by new events manager, Jennifer Morris, new sales planner Monique Maestas-Gower, and BlogHer employee #2, Kristin Darguzas, moved over to focus on conference sales full-time. We are ready for a new year, new challenges and new surprises for you!

But first: We are taking a break. We’ll be shutting down the last week of the year for some R&R. We wish you all the best the New Year has to offer and we thank you for an amazing year –- we can’t wait to do it again and meet new friends in 2011!

With gratitude,

The BlogHer Events Team ~

Elisa, Lori, Miriam, Jenn, Erin, Kristin, Jes, and Monique
