Calling all Southern BlogHers!

BlogHer Food '11 is rapidly approaching and we here on the BlogHer Events Team are very excited to take the conference out of the Bay Area for the first time and head to Atlanta! In fact I was so excited about heading south that I burst into an impromptu performance of the Gladys Knight and The Pips classic "Midnight Train to Georgia" (classic Motown dance moves included) in the middle of the BlogHer offices.

Well, I'm getting ready to write the Conference Guide, and being the California girl that I am, I have very limited expertise in local hotspots, restaurants and travel tips for Atlanta -- that's where you come in!

So tell me, what are your favorite sites and bites in the Atlanta area? Got a travel tip you want to share? Or BlogHer Food conference tips in general? I'm all ears! Let me know in the comments and you just may see yourself in our upcoming BlogHer Food '11 Conference Guide.

I'm so excited for the conference! There are so many delicious places to eat in Atlanta, I couldn't even begin to name them all! But here are a few amazing ones!

--You must, must, MUST go to the Varsity for the best onion rings in the South! Just going is an experience in and of itself, and their chili burgers are fantastic as well!

--I haven't been yet, but I've heard so many amazing things about Cakes & Ale...I'm hoping to make a trip while I'm up there!

--Don't miss the Vortex! Great burger joint in Little Five Points!

--another place I haven't been yet, but have heard nothing but rave reviews about is Woodfire Grill, which is co-owned by Kevin Gillespie from Top Chef. I'm always looking at their menu online and wishing I was in Atlanta!

Hope that helps! Can't wait until May!

in the 90s I visited Atlanta many times for conferences sponsored by the National Education Association, and a place I grew to love was Buckhead Diner. I believe we used to get there on Marta, but I am not 100% sure about that detail. What I do remember is the homemade potato chips with melted gorgonzola (kind of like nachos made with homemade potato chips.) Every time I went to Atlanta I would eat there at least once!

I'm definitely planning to visit the Dekalb Farmer's Market this time!

This is a request, rather than a suggestion. Can anyone tell me where I might be able to get some organic Georgia Peaches? From what I have been able to read it should be the very beginning of peach season. I would really like to do a farm tour where I could take photos of peaches on the trees. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Grabbing drinks and a bite at the Sun Dial Bar at the top of the Westin provides a great rotating view of the city. It is one of my absolute favorite places.

Also, here is an entire article I wrote about my fave food finds in ATL:

Enjoy!

You can take the Marta line east to the Decatur station and walk to great boutique shopping and dining. Like beer? Check the Brick Store Pub on the square, or Leon's, just off the square, same owners, and order the pommes frites with half a dozen dips. Take a stroll down Ponce deLeon to Cafe Lily or Watershed, owned by Indigo Girl Emily Saliers. It's a longer walk, or a short cab ride to Feast or Farmstead or Carpe Diem. And catch a musical act at Eddie's Attic.

Hi BlogHers :)
I cannot wait for BlogHer in Atlanta. I am Italian but have living in Atlanta 12 years now, so I can actually call it home now, y'all!
Here are some of my favorite tips/places:
- Restos: my all time favorite is a small place called cakes and ale. I also like souper Jenny for soup and salad or sandwich.
- Markets: the dekalb farmers market is my weekly mecca to collect ingredients for my recipes. I like the Morningside farmers market...and while you are in the Virginia Highlands area (where the market is) get bread or other baked yummies at Alon's
- If you can, pack a picnic and throw ball and frisbee at Piedmont Park. You'll love it.
- I love old fashioned sidecars and martinis at Hal's piano bar. They also have a mean steak.
- best pops? king of pops
- My favorite euro hangout is Apres diem. It's great to lounge on their mismatched sofas with a bunch of old friends there
- If you are looking for off the beaten track dim-sum and Asian food, you have to head to Buford Highway
- for trendy coffee spots, head to Octane lounge, san francisco cafe, or cafe' intermezzo (bonus: Intermezzo has a full dessert bar, a loooong list of other drinks, and a cool atmo)
- Other things to do/see: the acquarium (wow), visit the eclectic little 5 points neighborhood, tour CNN, go to the Castleberry Hill Art District, go biking/kayaking on the Chattahoochee river

Oh I am sure I missed many other things...but this came off the top of my head :)

I'll probably only be able to check out one thing (maybe two) since I arrive Thursday afternoon and leave Sunday morning.

The Dekalb Farmer's Market is NOT TO BE MISSED.

1) It doesn't look like any farmer's market you've ever seen. Even if you've seen 500 of them. A "Farmer's Market" is actually a complete misnomer.

2) It has a breathtaking array of produce from around the world. I would be willing to bet that at least 50% of *even a BlogHer Foodie group* will find at least one item they cannot identify.

However, skip the hot food bar and the bakery.

You will probably need to charter a bus for a trip. It is sort of near the Decatur MARTA station, but not really walking distance.

If you're going to Atlanta, don't miss the Botanical Garden: http://www.atlantabotanicalgarden.org/

And, while you're in the Piedmont Park neighborhood, ONE midtown kitchen is amazing!!!

P.S. I heart the High Museum--it's one of my favorite spots in ATL: http://www.high.org/

Two Urban Licks is my favorite restaurant. Also, Atlanta Cupcake Factory has the BEST cupcakes ever! Georgia Aquarium, World of Coke are right near where the conference is being held and are fun. Great shopping in Decatur (Stanton Designs is a good one), Little 5 Points and Virginia Highlands. Also, Farm Burger in Decatur should not be missed. Oh so many wonderful restaurants I cannot list them all.
