BlogHer Food Interviews: Ooey, Gooey, Gorgeous Healthy Food Photography

BlogHer Original Post

This week's BlogHer Food '13 speaker interview made my tummy grumble. As much as I love all of the sprinkles and sugar on food blogs, I love a good, healthy recipe. Our speakers for the Ooey, Gooey, Gorgeous and Healthy Food Photography panel know a thing or two about healthy recipes -- and how to make them look their best. I thought I'd ask them to show us a photo and share a recipe with this question:

Please share with us one example from your work in which you have taken some *boring,* healthy food and made it look fantastic. Explain to our readers how you achieved that look.

Regan Jones of The Professional Palate shared a "boring" photo of a Brussels sprouts recipe that has been vastly popular for her.

I don’t know if Brussels sprouts are considered *boring* or just downright undesirable, but they were my first thought when you asked the question. This image for roasted Brussels sprouts originally appeared my blog, The Professional Palate. It's one of my most visited recipes of all time. I think people “want” to eat healthy, but so often, healthy sounds dull and worse yet, looks it. But anyone who’s ever roasted a vegetable knows that with a little bit of high quality oil, a sprinkling of salt and some serious high heat of the oven to caramelize the natural sugar of the vegetable, even vegetables people shy away from can be transformed into a savory, satisfying and *sexy*.

I shot this late in the day, early in the fall in the back of my kitchen, which has a nice 3 window breakfast area. The light was diffused by the relative location of the house to the sun, but you could achieve the same thing with hotter daylight and a diffusing panel. I shot it overhead on my kitchen table with my DSLR. I wanted the images to show all the yummy pieces and the caramelization on the parchment paper.

Stephanie Quilao of Noshtopia will also be presenting during this session.

The Ooey, Gooey, Gorgeous and Healthy Food Photography session is for all levels of photographers, from beginners to advanced. It takes place from 2:30-4:00pm on Day Two, June 8, 2013. Here's more of what you can expect from this session:

It's easy to entice people with images of adorable, pastel cupcakes, but what about inspiring healthy eating? It’s time to pull broccoli out from chocolate cake’s shadow and give it the limelight. We’ll give you the digital tools and photo editing secrets to translate nutrition science into delicious and nutritious food photography.

I'm now off to go buy some Brussels sprouts. If you haven't registered for BlogHer Food '13 taking place in Austin, TX this June 7-8, you can do so now. We'd love to meet you there!
