It's my pleasure to introduce two brand new tools on BlogHer.com: My BlogHer (with Following and Friending) and Chatter!

Once you've logged into BlogHer, you'll see a brand new design of the log in box that includes a My BlogHer drop down menu. This is the menu that will take you to our new social networking tools.

My BlogHer provides you with a list of all of the most recent activity on BlogHer.com - recent blog posts, forum posts, list a blog entries, list a book entries, and Chatter updates. You can change the display of the My BlogHer page to allow you to view only specific content types that you're interested in seeing.

You can also sort this page so that it shows you only your most recent activity or the most recent activity of people you're following. But first, you need to follow people!

You can follow people by going to a profile page, and clicking the "following" button. A menu will popup that allows you to choose the specific content type or all content created by that person. You can also "friend" on this menu and if your friend request is accepted, you'll see that user appear on your Friends page - and you'll also be added to her Friends page. (For now, that's all friending does - but stay tuned for more social networking tools to roll out soon and your friends will play a larger role in those!)

Chatter is a new public messaging tool that allows you to send 140 character messages into the BlogHer Chatter stream. You can sort this page by all Chatter, the Chatter of people you follow, or just your own Chatter. Jump in and have fun with it, but I have to warn you - it's addictive!

If you have any questions about these new tools or find a bug, please feel free to reply to this post or send me an email at denise@blogher.com

We're really excited to launch these new tools and are looking forward to launching more new social networking tools in the weeks ahead.

Nice feature! (Chatter).  I love Twitter, and the new feauture on facebook.  I see everyone using this for their sites in the near future.

They sit so elegantly and balance on one leg waiting..hoping...making stuff happen :)

Good metaphor. I however am like the little impatient scurry mouse whining...when when when....;) hee hee

Are there any plans to allow SMS updates, like Twitter and Facebook do?  I would love to be able to Chatter via text messaging!

I could have known you would have thought of this. I do agree, names are tricky and especially in this context they need to be clear and refer to what it stands for.

Thanks for clarifying, Denise.

We actually batted that name around for awhile and two things happened - first, we decided it looked confusing in print. "chather, what's chather?" and second, some of us worried that it would bring a lot of folks in who thought we were some sort of dating service chat room. So, we nixed it.

i'm sure folks are gonna wanna shut me up soon.

but its too cool to have a twitter basically on BlogHer.

truly.

i adore ChatHer.....great idea.

chatter is a lil bit watered down for what our minds can and will do but no complaints. rather chatter than waiting til conferencing ;)

btw, anyone wanna follow on twitter i'm @tresha

and i'll easily say yes to any friend requests. how of course ;)

When I mentioned chatter to someone they assumed it would be ChatHer.

I had to double take, but how about ChatHer instead of Chatter or would that confuse us too much?

BlogHer is sure keeping us technically advanced.
As you can see on the chatter, I am just going to play with it, that is the only way for me to learn.
That means I have to get over the fact that while I am learning all my trial AND errors are public?!
Like double postings :)

Unfortunately, you're going to have to manually use tinyurl to conserve your characters. I'll add the request to my "wish list" but it isn't in scope for this version.

FINALLY!!!!!!!

A combined facebook and twitter on a women's network.

OF COURSE BlogHer would be the first to introduce this.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

Of the 300 folks I'm folloiwng and the 250 who follow me on Twitter....nada, nict, nunc ever respond to my tweets.....twitter is still a man's world out dere ladies....or at least, to me and what i've got so far it is.

So just tonight i was thinking of trying to 'unfollow' all the men just to see if i would read more topics of interest. and then i thought that was dumb b/c i learn a ton from their links and comments.

but there IS a need and a place for tweets (eh hem, chats, whatev) that are about issues that matter to women...

i'm so already addicted and i haven't even started and its 3am but i'm gonna start to play. wheeee!!!!

forgive me but this is just like WAY better to me than facebook and twitter...b/c it's where I'm already at home.....

I'm thrilled.....and i have loads of giddyness exploding.

THANK YOU BLOGHER CREATIVE MINDS.....this is just the next best thing to a birds of feather session or down time at a BlogHer conference....ya know?

Kay...off to play :) THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

Clicking someone's underlined name will take you to her profile. I left a comment above about using search to possibly find users on BlogHer as well. (it's hit or miss though.)

Getting to a profile page - what is the recommended way to do that, to friend someone (because you mean going to that person's profile page, yes?)?

Thanks for all the work.

If you know the exact user name, you can try searching on BlogHer (select BlogHer.com not the network option with the radio buttons) or use google search like this "blogher, lisa stone".

We're working on improved member search... stay tuned!
