Celebrate Leap Day

Today is February 29th - Leap Day! I have never done anything to celebrate this 'holiday' but since I feel the need to romance and date my husband, I decided I would surprise him with a Leap-ful day after he gets home from work. This will be our very first leap year officially together. We actually started dating about a week after the last leap year in 2008!  Image: serenitbee via Flickr ...more

Toddler Tricks - 68: Complain Loud and Clear

Problem: You’ve signed you child up for some activity. Whether it started out strong and slowly began to dwindle or it just wasn’t what you expected from the start, both you and your child are disappointed in the program. Do you know how many people are quiet about this? I just found out. So, I have a solution.SOLUTION:...more

Less Than Appropriate Thanksgiving Fun

I like to terrorize my Thanksgiving guests and make them DO things before they can have their dinner.  Because I use up all my creativity drawing stupid pictures and joking about horrifying genres of porn, my staple torture device is "The Hand Turkey." If you are unfamiliar with the hand turkey tradition, you are either not American, were home-schooled, or may have some sort of memory disorder.  Basically, you trace your hand, and make the tracing into a turkey. Very complicated stuff....more

Staying In...It's All the Rage!

I have been searching high and low for a budgeting "system" that works for me. Dave Ramsey's approach is awesome, I have friends that follow it religiously and have been rewarded accordingly.  I however, need a system I cannot cheat!  I lack restraint and need the structure but prefer something black and white and extreme. ...more

Don't Take No for an Answer

by Lianne Castelino www.whereparentstalk.com If I had a penny for every time my kids said 'no' to trying something new - be it a food item, clothing, activity or sport - we'd be zillionaires.   Okay, maybe just billionaires! Truth is most kids for the most part will reject anything foreign, never-seen-before, new.  But as a parent, we cannot be deterred. ...more

Make A Little Summer Magic

Cheers! Summer is officially here. And based on the weather here, summer didn't want anyone to forget it. It was H-O-T all week. After weeks of back and forth warm-and-then-cold-rainy-days, summer is here full throttle. And I'm excited that our tall, seeding grass will die back soon, so I can perhaps breathe clearly again. Sniff sniff. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ So, on the solstice we managed a few fun activities. Finally. ...more

Surviving 5 Kids and Fundraisers

Hello there, would you like to buy a $3 candy bar? How about seven pounds of frozen cookie dough? Not much of a sweet tooth, huh? That’s okay, how about a pepperoni roll, tickets to the pancake breakfast—or maybe the spaghetti dinner? Oh. You’re on a diet. I understand—I would be, too, if I didn’t have kids.  Maybe you would be more interested in a magazine subscription? Or a high-fragrance, flameless, candle substitute? Maybe a discount card that offers insignificant savings from places you rarely visit? Ooh, better yet, forget the card; I’m selling a whole discount book. Where are you going? Wait! Don’t forget to swing by the carwash so kids who have never washed a vehicle in their lives can scratch up yours! Just drop your spare change in the can on your way out!...more
