Momma, I See You.

I saw you today. Spit up on your shirt, dark circles under your eyes, and wrinkly pants…I saw as you lifted that baby girl to your chest, patted her back while gently swaying back and forth and humming her favorite song. You were glowing....more

How To Find a Quality Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)

Ideally, you should find an IBCLC you love before your baby is born.  But, if you are unable to do this, searching for a consultant after is certainly an option. Even if you are having a lot of breastfeeding difficulty and you feel desperate, don’t settle for the first breastfeeding support person you can find. Make sure you know who you are interviewing and what questions to ask them.  Meeting with the wrong person can make breastfeeding worse rather than better!...more

What to do when your 3 month old baby has a mullet.

Baby bath time in our home is almost always followed by some sink sitting time with the blow dryer for our little one. Who knew at this age I'd need to be pulling out a blow dryer?! Oh, that hair! I never in a million years imagined my child would have such great lengths, especially since my own hair grows at a snail's pace. I'm pretty much inept at hair styles. Never was I one for braids, fancy updo's or anything of the sort so this is all new territory for me....more

Broken

Is this real? Is this precious baby really here? Alive?I stare at my baby through the clear plastic wall that contains him, feeling a similar plastic wall around my heart. My mind knows he is mine. Logically, I know he is here. He is safe. But my heart—my heart is not yet so trusting....more

Know NOW which Support Group to Go to. Then Go.

For the past five years, I have run a weekly support group for new breastfeeding moms. This isby far one of my most favorite things.  Typically, eight to 12 moms with babies four-months and younger come to group. We sit in a circle and one by one, each mom introduces herself and her baby. She gives us a back story of her breastfeeding journey and she gets the chance to ask me and the other moms questions about breastfeeding....more

Desperate

The moment I hear her weight spoken, I panic. Two ounces less. Two ounces too few. Two  ounces. How does a baby lose weight after eating? How is my body not making enough milk? I fed her for hours, for days. Every two hours, around the clock, like I was supposed to. When was the last time I slept? Am I eating enough? Drinking enough water? I must be doing something wrong, because this isn’t supposed to happen this way!...more

What Wallace Wore

My boy Wallace is six months old and starting to crawl (insert uncontrollable sobbing here). He's my last baby and my only boy and I'm finding it hard to gather motivation to dress him. Most days he's rockin a white onesie, pants-less, never a sock or shoe in sight....more
