Plie, More Than Bendig

Plie - (plee-AY) Bent, bending. A bending of the knee or knees…..Oh but it is so much more. The plie makes the joints and muscles soft and pliable and the tendons flexible and elastic and develops a sense of balance. At the beginning of class, during the barre exercises, plies accomplish so much for the dancer. They begin to warm up the joints of the feet, ankles, knees and hips. They help in the development of flexibility of the muscles in the lower body and bring an awareness of the turn-out in the hip sockets....more

Foot Play

As I was attempting my run this morning with legs of lead, I noticed a little bird flitting through the bushes as I made my way down the trail leading to several sets of stairs.  A few years ago this steep ravine was transformed into Eagle Landing Park.  This park is a lovely little get-away a mere half mile from my house and can transport me back to a time when the land was all trees, birds and critters making their way down to the Puget Sound.  Of course, there weren’t the 270 metal stairs that can cause pain when used as a workout tool.  So this li...more

lights, camera...believe!

When my high school announced a Grease musical, several of my close friends auditioned and I braced myself for months of build-up and excitment for a show I wasn't brave enough to try out for.Fear of rejection, fear of mockery, fear of failure. All of them stood in my way.  When my oldest daughter was invited to audition for a competitive dance team a few years ago, it caught me off guard. I wasn't sure if I should put her in front of the things I feared most, especially knowing how much she feared them too....more

It's Working

It's working, I think. The knee is definitely better but the ankles are a bit touchy yet. I'm still going to stay fairly low key until next Tuesday, and in fact having a massage and facial today. Unfortunately, we are supposed to go to a dance Saturday night and that is what tweeks my knee usually. I hope we don't dance too much.   Talking about dancing, I think I forgot about this little function and I don't know if I have anything to wear or even time to find something. I'm a bit of in an internal panic here this morning....more

Gotta Dance!

Gotta Dance! The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves.  ~Carl Jung...more

Happy thought #34: Dance like nobody's watching

I turn on Bobs & Lolo's "On your feet" song, and my daughter and I dance in the kitchen like nobody's watching.  She observes my goofy moves and I giggle as she tries to imitate my actions.  Indian bangles are lined up her arm, and hooped over her ears like earrings.  One by one they fly off as we throw our arms in the air.  We twirl in a circle shaking jazz hands as we go, and then fall down in a pile of laughter.  It's liberating, and laughable, to dance like nobody's watching....more

Dance As If No One Is Watching

Tonight I watched my daughter perform a dance with 30 others that she choreographed. People cheered, many stopped what they were doing to watch, some videotaped it. She posted it on YouTube and Facebook, and so many have already commented positively about how amazing the dance is. Did I mention, she is 15 years old? Did I mention that she is a paid choreographer and dance teacher? What makes this young woman amazing is not her talent, nor her expertise. What makes this young woman amazing is her courage. She dances full out "as if no one is watching". She dances and lives in the moment....more
