Secret Skills

I've been pretty open with you all here. I've talked about my mustache and my meat apron and my underwear. I have shared my deepest fears and my wildest hopes. But there is something I haven't told you. I am an awesome dancer. Oh sure, you're thinking, maybe you can two step or do the Electric Slide or some other honky line dance.  ...more

Disco Fever

What ever happened to my Disco shoes that had little blinking lights in the heels?  I had to plug the dang things into the wall to recharge them at night.  Nan probably sold them at the Fort Sam Houston Thrift Shop where she worked as a volunteer for 30 plus years, along with my Beatle dolls that would have been worth a bundle. ...more

Disappointment . . . A Lesson Learned

Up until last week, disappointment and rejection were two feelings that I had never reallythought about my daughter experiencing—at least not at the age of eleven. I'm not talking about small disappointments, like the time she didn’t get the present she had been dreaming about, or the rejection of not being invited to a classmate’s birthday party. These feelings—as painful as they were at the time—were fleeting and soon forgotten. This time was different....more

Mmmhmm I Can't Help But Move It

I went to Zumba Monday night and while that is great, Beyonce is greater. I have done this dance, oh, 6 times tonight. I LOVE it! It gets your heart racing and is a complete blast!...more

The dance lessons I never took

When I was little, my family lived out in the country. We were 15 minutes from the town I call my hometown, and that was a two-light town that really didn't even need that second light. When I was in second grade, I signed up for twirling lessons only to have to drop out before the first class even happened. Both of my parents worked, and there was no way to "catch a ride" with anyone after class because, well, we just lived too far away....more

The One Where I Wee Myself at a Wedding

DorkyDad and I are just back from a wonderful weekend in Galway, celebrating the wedding of two very good friends. DorkyGranny was kind enough to babysit, so it was just the two of us (and 100 other guests, obviously!). Other than the wedding itself, which I don't think I can write about yet without being too gushy, here are a few of the noteworthy moments. No DorkySon!...more

Upbeat VS. Downbeat

For those who aren't in the know of reading sheet music, here's a little lesson:Music, when written, is divided into measures.  These measures are typically written in time signatures, that is, how many beats are in a measure. You have 4/4, which most music uses, 3/4 which is typically a waltz beat, 2/4 is a march (think Sousa), and 6/8 is crazy hippie dancing. Anyway, you get the idea.  4/4 means you count the music 1, 2, 3, 4....more

Music helps me heal...

When my ex-husband told me that he wanted to end our marriage, I spent that night crying to sleep and woke up thinking this was all just a dream. I was so lost. My heart and mind was filled with so many negative thoughts... and how my future felt so bleak and dark.  On the way to work that morning, out of habit, I turned on the music in my car.  It's the same type of music I have on my cd changer that I have been listening to which were varying degrees of trance, house and chillout music.  But on that day, I had an amazing epiphany....more

Dancing While Black and Disabled

Ms. Ash questions what happens when people cannot speak out, say, about race. The post features a picture where the dancer (Ms. Ash) appears to be silenced by her pointe shoes -- the ribbons of the shoes seem to make a large "x" across her mouth. (If you can look more closely, though, the tape doesn't actually visibly meet the ribbon.) Either way, though, it's a striking picture. ...more
