Mother's Day? What's That?

"Oh, my boss asked me to work tomorrow and Saturday night.""Oh, really?""Yeah, and Sunday is Mother's Day.""Oh, it is?"  A worried looked seeped into his eyes."Yeah, but don't worry about it, seriously, don't worry about it." I smiled. "I'm not your mother."...Mother's Day has always been very important to my own mother, and I'm not sure why....more

Prioritizing having fun - can I do it without feeling selfish?

My cousin said to me Sunday about my midlife sabbatical from working: “If I were you, I’d just have fun and do stuff you haven’t been able to do all these past years.” It hit a chord. I’d been prioritizing volunteering for charities as my next step. I’ve been feeling a need to “do good” for a long time. But I’d also been depriving myself of pursuing having fun for myself. Why? Do a lot of moms do this? All I know is I’ve been putting my daughter, family, and job’s needs above my own for a long time. But I immediately I heard conflict in my head. It felt self-centered....more

Favorite Mom Moments

In honor of Mother's Day this weekend, I asked some people what their favorite Mom moment was. It could be as a mother or with their own mother. Here are a few of the answers I received: "Summertime at my Mom's house in Ohio. My mom, my nine-year-old son, and I are chasing each other around the backyard with squirt guns - and we're all squealing with delight." - Sherry "I still remember the day my mother picked me up at the bottom of the hill to our home and carried me on piggy back all the way up the hill....more

Operation Give a Shit

Being a selfish person, unused to spending day after day caring for children, cleaning the house and working on deadline for various outlets without seeing a regular paycheck or working regular hours, I sometimes have trouble "giving a shit." When life overwhelms me, I can spend all day until 4 p.m. in my pajamas. I can keep my kids indoors and shake my head at the state of my house, so deep under that I don't even know where to start.I don't like living like that....more

Kids. Stop It Right Now!

I wish that...my kids would just get along and not fight or bicker. They fight over everything, all the time. It drives me CRAZY. This is Rachele's wish.  Rachele is a mom who blogs about her life and family at: More Fun Than Allowed...With Kids (mftawk.com)....more

If you haven't noticed yet, today is May the 4th. Officially known as Star Wars Day in geek circles, during which geeks (including my family) greet each other with "May the 4th be With You". Dorky? Of course. Fun for the kiddies? You bet!...more

The Burden of Existence

My husband wrote this observation in 1997, more than ten years before we had the babies. It provides a thoughtful perspective and broader implications to my daily seemingly-miniscule struggles with them, a main point of contention being that I cannot understand why anyone would want to spend so much of their time in distress, particularly over whether or not they can have ice cream for breakfast.Read More:...more
