Month of Awesome Women: Sandy Close

In writing about my hero Sandy Close, it's hard to know where to start.  The end point is easy: Sandy is a over 65+ writer, editor, creator, social change leader and visionary whose work at New America Media and Pacific News Service gives me a map for what fearless, consistent work in the  community-focused media space can look like. Her work is so unique, and her impact so profound, that this year Sandy was the 2011 recipient of the George Polk Career Award, one of journalism's highest accolades. ...more

Virtually Speaking Sunday, March 6 to Thursday, March 10

Interested in politics, public affairs, news, media? Listening to the people you read? I'm still getting the hang of blogging (2nd post and all...) so I hope for patience from prospective readers and will look at the comments. If any. My hope is to put a little spotlight on some fine writes we've convinced to try a new medium: podcasts. So I guess that, more than patience, I'm hoping for curiousity and that some readers will become listeners, too....more

Warning: Television Is About To Get Worse

It is actually possible for television to fall further into it's dark abyss. I had to share this interesting post I found on Los Angeles' Craigslist.org about "Mom's Club", a great new show about 'Amazing Moms' currently in production. **********************************  "Mom's Club" casting posted on Craigslist 1-3-11....more

Who Won #BrandBowl? Arianna Huffington and AOL in Overtime

My short blog about Bridgestone and Chevy winning #BrandBowl got scrapped before it could even get published this morning when I saw a tweet sometime after midnight announcing AOL bought The Huffington Post. Already in bed, the "What?" I yelled out loud caused my poor dog to jump up and look at me very confused....more

Oprah's Family Secret...

I'm sure everybody knows by now, Oprah has a sister! Family secrets were exposed today on The Oprah Show by none other than Ms. Winfrey herself. Oprah had hinted in pre-show sound bites that her upcoming Monday Show would expose a secret that left her "speechless". Well, now that's old news already as the show has aired and we all know the deal as far as the family wants to open it up to the eyes of the world. ...more

Fat Chicks need Blogs too!

Not so long ago, I started to write a blog for fat chicks. There, I said it. FAT. I hope you won’t be offended, but I’ve had it with euphemisms like chubby, plump or plus size.I think a healthy body image is a lot about acceptance and respect, and less about adhering to whatever the media dictates as the norm. I strongly believe that beauty and health does not depend on your dress size!...more

Every Mother’s Nightmare

An eerie face, floating on a blue screen.  Shaved, lumpy skull surrounding twisted features.  Eyes blazing with an unfathomable glee.  A determined, satisfied grin twisting harsh young features into a frightening clown mask of human misery.   The face of a 22 year old man from Tucson.  An unknown man, from an everyman street in an every man suburb.  And yet, this is every mother’s worst nightmare.  Jared Lee Loughner wasn’t born in this image.  Going back 22 years, he was undoubtedly a lovely infant, with chubby cheeks and toes.&n...more

Wikileaks: The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break

www.whenpigsfly.squarespace.comDid the U.S. government learn nothing from Tiger Woods' affairs? Technology is a very fickle friend. One minute it's transporting all of your innermost thoughts through the ether to destinations known, the next it's letting everyone and their brother know who you are sleeping with and what you'd like to do to them. All it takes is someone with a grudge and a little flexibility in the morality department and suddenly every secret comes trickling out....more

Lolita Redux: The Early Sexualization of Our Daughters

Little Lolitas are in the news again. Or rather, society’s sexualized images of young girls are in the news again. A recent report by the Parents Television Council warns us that the objectification of young women in the media must be stopped; that girls’ self-esteem, body image, and sexuality will be deeply harmed because of this oppression. While I couldn’t agree more, I wonder, is this really new news? ...more
