In Praise Of Napping

I know one person who is going to have a good laugh as he reads this post. My husband - José.He's been an afternoon napper since we first met almost 9 years ago! I'd tease him for not being able to resist hitting the bed almost 15 minutes after lunch. When we got married he'd pester me to come and rest. Somehow, naps were not something that was encouraged when I was growing up. Why even today I don't think my almost-90-year-old father naps during the day! Somewhere in my subconscious napping during the day amounted to laziness....more

Maslow and Me: Where Are You in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs?

This week I'm on a delayed posting schedule. Kind of like the trash pick-up delay after a major holiday. So I guess I'm feeling like trash today. But I will insert a cute photo to cheer myself up....more

10 Things That Are Not Cool About Getting Older

1. Mail no longer consists solely of care packages, CDs from Columbia House, letters from your best friend dotted with hearts, and magazines containing quizzes about how to land the man/woman of your dreams.  Now your mail has nothing but bills, fliers for gutter cleaning, and quizzes from your financial advisor entitled “What Will College Cost When Your Child is 18?”  Do not, under any circumstances, EVER take this quiz.  It will scare you so badly you will actively root for your child to fail his second grade spelling test....more

Swimsuits And Cellulite, Oh My!

I don’t have the courage to snap a pic of me in a bathing suit and post it on social media for all the world to see.I live near the beach in SoCal. Nuff said. And recently when Selena Gomez posted a pic of herself on a beach (and while she definitely looks like she’s gained a few ellbees), the vitriol of the comments is overwhelming. No way I’m exposing myself to that.I can do all my own fat-shaming in my head, thank you very much....more

What if . . . ?

It’s been more than a year and a half since that fire. The house has been completely gone for over a year--nothing remains but a giant “foot print” where the house used to be. We settled with the insurance company, and my husband and I went our separate ways. Two of the kids live with me, the third lived with my oldest son until her marriage last month. My husband bought a mobile home nearer his work, and lives alone. We’ve all settled in and are moving on....more

How to Tell If You're Getting Old

Last week I called a friend of mine and complained I couldn’t get warm. My personal internal thermostat was set on "freeze." Shivers were running through my body, even though I was wrapped in an afghan.“What’s your home thermostat set on?” he asked.“66 degrees.”“What does the thermostat read?’“66 degrees.”“Well, Deb … then your house is 66 degrees. Turn the heat up. Most people our age have it bumped up to 70. My wife has our house locked in at 71.”...more

LIES the 1970s Told US

It seems to me, that in Life, a person should be able to count on a few things to be true: your mother and the deliciousness of a chocolate croissant. Other then that, all bets are off. The problem is that we all get caught-up in the mind-numbing illogic of rumors, advertising, old wives tales, people we want to impress, love, hatred, apathy… google search results. You get my drift. ...more

Before You Take the Plunge, Enjoy Your Own Kiddie Pool

By anyone’s standards, I am fortunate - on many levels, really - but for one thing in particular:  My husband never travels for work. When I say never, I mean never. Well, perhaps in the 28 years he has worked for his company he has traveled two or three times for something work-related, but in general, St. Louis is his home base. And for many years that was a huge perk of his job, that and the flexibility being a salesperson afforded him. No travel, great hours. What more could I ask for? For him to leave....more
