Taking care of myself in a crisis

Like most of us, I didn’t breeze through life without any hardships. I have been through a great deal while riding this ride of life. Some were more painful then others. Most people would probably want take away the worst things that have happened in their life, the memories of a painful past and all the difficult feelings that came along with them. I am no expert, but I would guess that would be a normal and natural response, it certainly used to be mine....more

The Mother Daughter Dance: My Chance to Offer Unconditional Love

I'm about to lecture my grade five kid about the stuffing of her snow pants into the secret compartment of her backpack, when the memory of a winter coat creeps in and silences me like the overnight snowfall waiting for us on the other side of the front door....more

Whew...what a day!

Don't get me wrong, I love my Mother, some days more than others.  I cooked a turkey breast today and had all the fixin's even though I feel like crap.  I invited Mom over for dinner.  It was nice to have her here, then she starts to talk.  As a Christian I believe that any form of gossip is wrong, obviously Mom doesn't believe the way I do.  So she started to talk about a girl that I was in Girl Scouts (yes, a long time ago) with.  She's a year or two younger than I.  So Mom said...She's really put on weight.  She judges people by how much they weigh...more

Psycho Babble

Yesterday I called The Mother on three separate occasions, only to be unknowingly answered each time by her butt, Douchetooth, or any of the other technological advances we've devised to bi-pass the highly inconvenient human task of answering the phone by pushing a button. At any rate, each time one of these intervening factors connected my phone to her purse or whatever, I became an anonymous ear to her very intense, very uncomfortable, very PUBLIC conversation. ...more

Some Years Are Not Meant for New Year Resolutions

God, what a damn mess, taking down a brittle dead Christmas tree is. And after all my boasting about what a steal-of-a-juicy-spruce our $39 Home Depot tree was, lasting over a month – it was still alive! Well, from across the room, anyway, from a safe vista distance, it still looked alive.... ...more

How Do You Bond With Your Teenage Son? I Prefer Milkshakes, Bad Pop Music

The beat of the music filled the car much louder than I normally prefer. But, I didn’t turn the sound down. I just let it fill the space around me and my 13-year-old who was silently lamenting his lacrosse team’s loss in the championship game of an intense full-day four-game tournament....more

Motherhood (or, a few things that I'm ashamed to admit)

Sometimes I wonder if I was meant to have kids.Don’t get me wrong, I love Theo. I really, really love him. He is the greatest. I mostly can’t imagine what my life would be like without him. So let’s be really clear on all that stuff right now.But sometimes I just wonder if I’m really cut out to be a mother. Like, I think I might just have the wrong personality for it?...more

How To Help Your Child With a School Project Without Going Nutso

Dear Mouthy Housewives, My daughter is in the 4th grade and she's a good student. However, this fall she's been assigned not one, not two, but THREE class projects to work on at home at the same time. I'm talking about things like Science Fair boards where I have to buy materials, help her out and yell at her to do it. The teachers don't seem to realize how stressful this is and one even wrote "Have fun doing this as a whole family!" on the assignment. Seriously? How can I get through this without going crazy?...more
