If my favorite movie characters from the 80s & 90s had iPhones

I once asked author Jennifer Weiner a question on Twitter about whether she feels the need to incorporate social media in her books now, as opposed to her first book that came out in 2001 before the days of Facebook and Twitter.  She kindly tweeted me back, stating that she actually does because a book set in the present would feel 'tone deaf' without it.Ah, yes, I can see that.  I knew she'd have good advice....more

What's so magic about Magic Mike?

So, I finally got around to watching Magic Mike. Honestly, it wasn't on my to-do list or anything, I'd just had a rotten day and I thought it would be a lighthearted romp with a few sexy abs to cheer me up. What I got was ... a little distressing. And not just because there was very little plot, an enormous amount of mumbling, and almost every scene seemed to be tinted green, but because there was more female frontal nudity in the movie than male nudity! Excuse me, I thought I signed up to see a movie about male strippers?...more

An "Epic" Film About Environmental Concerns

What really goes on in a forest? And why should we care? Is a forest just a bunch of creepy vines, trees too tall to climb, and annoying insects that bite and sting? Or is it a place where Nature works the magic the Earth needs every day to keep our world going strong?...more

TV vs. the Movies: Which Does Better By Women?

I live in Los Angeles where saying that you don’t like movies is tantamount to claiming atheism in a church. But I don’t like movies, generally speaking. In contrast, I quite like TV. Does this seem weird?...more

Which Summer Movies Do You Want To See?

I smell popcorn! It's late spring, and the thundering herd of summer blockbuster movies are lining up to clamor for your attention. All the studios are hoping for a box-office-monster hit, so they're piling on the stars and the special effects to get people's butts off the beach and into the theater seats. Nobody did it better than Steven Spielberg, who basically invented the summer smash hit with "Jaws" in 1975. His movie literally scared people out of the water....more

Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers": Just, Awful [Review]

I went to see Spring Breakers late last night with one of my oldest friends. Written and Directed by Harmony Korine (KIDS) and starring Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and James Franco, the movie has had people talking since its cast was first announced. Much like everyone else in the theatre, we had a high expectation coming into this film. After all the hype, I was really disappointed in how much it SUCKED. It was a terrible attempt to be an artistic film.  Throughout the whole movie I kept thinking, "Why am I here?”, "I paid for this?", and "What is even going on right now?” ...more
