"The Host"- Better Than "Twilight", But No Standing Ovation

“The Host” is an American science fiction film, adapted from the Stephenie Meyer novel of the same name.  Meyer is also the author of the well-known series, “The Twilight Saga”.  I’ve read all of the “Twilight” books, and like many others, I have to say that the novels were IMMENSLY better than the movies.  I can’t stand Kristen Stewart, and of course she was cast as the main female protagonist....more

Take my excitement for what it is: a mumbled sentence.  My plane ride yesterday + an accidental overdose of Benadryl has left me a trainwreck today.  Ughhhh....Here it is: Your normal girl's guide to the Oscars. I am not an industry insider. I haven't seen all the nominees.  I do not own a designer dress. "Designer" for me means something from The Gap.Here we go:...more

So much for the date

With it being a Tuesday night and no kids I was thinking it would be so nice to have a half night out and a half night in. So Sonny and I loaded up to head to Cleveland for some delicious Golden Wu and then to Walmart so we could pick up some movies and chocolate. We stopped at my friends house so she could burn me some music since I lost ALL of mine from when my laptop was stolen back in November. ...more

Girls don't need math

What can you say to attract undergraduate college students to a course in science communication? When I explain to new acquaintances that my work revolves around science communication, their eyes glaze over. Boredom sets in. So how can I persuade students? My Indian relatives advise me to speak from the heart and tell a story when I’m attempting to convince folks that science is scintillating. That math is sexy. But I haven’t always felt that way. ...more

Romantic movies that make you laugh.

Romantic movies are not generally my cup of tea. I don't mind watching them, sometimes I even like them, but you won't find me sleeping in a tent outside a movie theater just to be the first in line to see one. ...more

Oscar Watch: "Beasts of the Southern Wild" [Review]

The Indie darling of late has been Beasts of the Southern Wild, a little film about a community living just off a levee in Louisiana in a place called The Bathtub. The focus of the film is on Hushpuppy, a 5 year old girl, and her father, as they make a life off the grid. The world is divided into The Bathtub and the Dry World (the civilized world). Their life stands in stark contrast to the life that most of us live in the Dry World. In the Dry World, kids usually go to traditional schools and learn the usual subjects....more
