Recipe Monday - Scalloped Potato Ham Bake

I am not even ashamed of this recipe because sometimes I just cannot from-scratch it. When I went looking for a recipe for this, I had two boxes of pre-packaged scalloped potatoes, and pre-cut ham chunks. And all the recipes I found started with "boil the potatoes." No. Not that night. So I give you, 10-minute scalloped potato ham bake from a box. It was a life saver, and I don't care....more

Sunday Pasta®: Spaghetti con L’uovo Fritto (Fried Egg)

My friend Chris Laibe recently imparted me with some Confucius-grade wisdom: “Everything is better with a fried egg on it. Even a fried egg.” I quickly realized that this pearl had always been right under my nose — from the fancy NYC gastropub serving fried duck egg over cardoons, to the brasserie serving fried egg over a salad of frisee and lardon, to Denny’s Grand Slam breakfast....more

Vintage Recipe Tried and True - Gingerbread

Yesterday, I ventured into one of my vintage cookbooks from 1934 to try to make a gingerbread. I have never used Swan Down Cake Flour, but this book had cake recipes that used the flour and the success in baking.I normally us all-purpose flour for all my baking, but I was willing to go on an adventure.  The entire kitchen was filled with the aroma of ginger and molasses for about 50 minutes.  Once I had it out of the oven, my husband and son could not wait for it to cool off.  I have to tell you I do not have any left at the end of the day. ...more

So will brown rice, a box of quinoa, cous cous (whole wheat) and cans of beans. Steam the veggies, pop the potato in the micro and you’re done...more

Sunday Pasta®: Anelli al Forno (Baked Pasta Rings)

Knock knock. Who’s there? Trixie. Trixie who? Trixie Dekaphobia (aka, triskaidekaphobia, or the fear of the number 13). Fear of 13? I just can’t relate. For me, it’s finally 2013 and I couldn’t be happier.  13 is  my lucky number, as it was my grandfather Edwin’s. He was born in April 13, 1913, as he claimed, at the hour of 13:13, and 13 seconds....more
