What's in Your Beach Bag? (Or How Do You Turn off Work Mode?)

If you clicked on this link thinking you might find some good sunscreen, two novels, and the best sunglasses on the planet, you should probably go read Vanity Fair. For the record, I have none of those things in my beach bag, but I do have serious questions about why anyone needs Band-Aids at the beach, despite how cute they are.I have to use an extra-large L.L. Bean tote bag to manage my ridiculous inability to relax for the first four days....more

My fancy pedicure

All spring, I’ve wandered around with dry, calloused heels.  I thought it was about time for professional attention, so I bopped over to my favorite day spa.  I say day spa loosely, since it’s really just a Vietnamese nail salon that happens to have daytime hours.  ...more

Life is hard sometimes. Like sweat in your eye, hold in your breath, hard. With the hard, it's very common to forget the easy. Like laying next to the one you love. Breathing fresh air. Making choices, from what you wear to what you eat. ...more

I'm Just Gonna Be A "Slug", Saturday...

I had already decided by Wednesday that on Saturday I was just going to be a slug.  You know, I was going to have one of those lazy Saturdays where nothing was expected of me and I might just stay in my pajamas all day long. ...more

Have A Calmer New Year (All Year): Stop Relaxing

I stopped making New Year's resolutions about six or seven years ago. Instead of looking forward and making plans, I started instead to look back at the months already fading away in life's rear-view mirror and name three things I did well—or even just well enough. This way, I start the year with a pat on the back, not a kick in the ass. (Life itself is pretty good at doling out those kicks without assistance from me, thank you very much.)...more

Alone with my thoughts

Sometimes life gets so busy that days, weeks, and months pass by in a flash. It's already December and the year is almost over. How the heck did that happen? Brings to mind a quote from one of my favourite movies: "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."  I love taking walks....more

The Power of Girls’ Weekends

I can think of few things more let-your-hair-down relaxing than a girls’ weekend or week. There’s something about stepping out of your ‘real’ life for a while and having the time and leisure to get caught up with each other’s lives, laugh yourselves silly, spend time in your pajamas, skip wearing makeup and not worry about counting calories or glasses of wine, that is so soothing to the soul. There’s no one to nag about unloading the dishwasher or taking out the garbage, and no one requiring anything from you....more

December is upon us...

And so is the cray-cray holiday rush to buy everything we can, make ourselves crazy, and totally not enjoy time with our loved ones. In my attempt (let's hope not totally futile) to relax and enjoy some time off, or, at least a little break, which I SORELY need, I thought I would plan it all out. 'Cause you know, that's just what I do....more
For now, Laine, I am trying to plan my menu, lol! And this year we only buy presents for our 2 ...more

Family Vacation Tragedy, Anxiety and Learning to Relax

I was walking up and down and up and down the aisles of Food Lion on the island yesterday. We had already done our big vacation food shopping trip, but I had stopped back in to find a few things we had forgotten: aluminum foil, hummus, crackers and Popsicles. You would think that year after year of shopping in the same grocery store on vacation would teach me where things are, but it hasn't and I found myself wandering kind of aimlessly. Suddenly, a voice came over the intercom. "DJ, if you're in the store, your mom is looking for you."...more
