You Might Be a Southern Mom If...

1. You ever shouted, "Stop your wallerin' out there and get inside before you get your clothes dirty; we're gettin' ready to go out!" For those who don't speak Southern, wallerin' is the same as wallowing and describes when animals roll around in the mud to keep cool. We Southern Moms also use it to describe what our kids are doing out in the yard when they play. ...more

Weekend Getaway: Durham, North Carolina

Last month, we hightailed it over to Durham, North Carolina (that's in the US, folks) to throw my sweet big sister a baby shower. North Carolina is the state in which I was born, the state in which my sister and more recently, my mother, live, and the state we plan to move to post-London.It's a lovely state, that North Carolina. Beautiful as all get out, relaxed, friendly, and super happening, too. We were there for just a few short days but we sure did make the most of it. Here's what we got up to:...more

Sweet Cornbread Muffins

Cornmeal is  a southern staple.  Growing up my family used cornmeal for savory corn bread, sweet corn bread (my favorite) and as a batter to fry fish.  Not one person in my family didn’t have a supply of cornmeal stashed in their pantry.  Although the corn bread muffin isn’t very fancy, it’s a really good muffin and serves as a perfect side dish for most southern meals or in this instance for breakfast served with a drizzle of honey or homemade preserves.  I hope you try this recipe and if you do, I’d love to hear how it turned out for you....more

My Mom's Golden Pound Cake

The recipe you see below was written by my mother sometime during my first year of marriage. She had come to stay with me when she found out I was pregnant with her first grandchild. You should know that my mom and I during my teen years did not get along to say the least. I gave her more trouble than she ever deserved. We had a very rocky relationship and previous to my marriage I did everything I could to stay as far away as I could. But, here I was newly married and expecting. The lights for me were coming on, and I could see the hope in my mom’s eyes....more

My Own Mississippi

I inherited my Mississippi from my mother at the age of 14.  My mother had been making a pilgrimage from Southern California to her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi since her childhood and now I was deemed old enough to join her. Being a teenager, I did not yet have the appreciation for the great state of Mississippi, but I did know that we had family roots in Mississippi and I wanted to meet my Southern relatives. ...more
